Great question asked on Arrowhead Pride:
Quote:
What needs to happen in 2011 for you to be willing to extend Todd Haley? What would have to happen to cause you to forego the fourth year and fire his ass? |
IN!
|
Anything less than 7-9 and i'll be pissed
Actually even at 7-9 i'd be pretty upset, but that would be me giving up on Haley |
SB or GTFO!
|
He needs to go into the stands at half time & feel up and old broad on the first row
|
AFC west repeat champs. No matter if it's 7-9 or 12-4.
|
Win the division or history
|
signs of maturity and sanity
signs that coaching is a strength and not a liability during games needs to be able to get along with other coaches a polished product on the field(especially on offense) |
Stop being a pussy/laz

If we make the playoffs this season I think it has to be a lock for extention, no?
To me, the moment that will make or break Haley is how he and Pioli handle the QB situation after this season. If Cassel sells them and they stick with him for whatever reason, their heads are on the line in 2012 if it failed IMO, well atleast Haley's would be. If we struggle this year and they go else where at QB, that decision will be the one. Stanzi or a top pick at QB. That direction might buy Haley more time with a built in excuse for struggle with a young QB. I don't think a record 7-9 or above merits firing. |

Anything less than 9 wins, and he's coaching on a 1-year deal and you decide after 2012.
He wins a playoff game, extend him. No way he gets fired in 2011. |

I have a feeling that this is the thread that will be looked at as a joke after we win the division and win a playoff game. Last year, the Chiefs improved by 6 wins and we have an even better team this year(minus Moeaki). I say balls to the walls and FU for even thinking that Haley should be canned. Seriously, who else is out there that would do a better job?
Let's just enjoy the ride, shall we? |
We have a tough schedule and honestly, we still have some holes. I think we're between 7-9 and 9-7 this year and Haley stays. Next year is the make or break year.

IMHO he just has to show he is maturing as a coach. No or very few bonehead decisions. He has to get these rookies playing the way he got D, Bowe and Johnson playing. And those two still need to produce this year without taking a step back.
I don't think our record will be what it was last year, too many things already stacking up against us. Strength of schedule being the biggest. The loss of Moeaki being another. I am not even sure we make the playoffs. But if he can get the younger guys playing I would extend him. I would hate to start shuffling head coaches the way the Faiders have. It just upsets any progress or momentum you have to continue building. |
It's a different NFL - there's my contribution.

Unless we fall flat on our faces this year, I see no reason not to keep him on. Granted we won't be playing all the Girl Scout teams we played last year but we're building a solid foundation with this team. I don't expect playoff this year. If they happen, that's a bonus.

Haley's fate will rest in how manages in game decisions, and not gambling early in the contest. He's antithesis of Herm, but if Haley has multiple games like Herm did against SD which the outcome was shouldered by dumbass decisions then he's gone.

As long as Laz continues to hate him, I'll assume he's doing a good job and vote for him getting an extension.
|
I look at this as a pairing of GM and HC. The guy in the drivers seat is Matt Cassel. I think they need to show improvement. This team needs to show it is competitive and Matt Cassel is at the center of such a showing. Next year will be the year I'd be looking for certain accomplishments.

It's usually some BS rumor he runs with. |
I think they're still building. A major step back would be bad but not deadly for me concerning Haley unless his behavior is erratic on the sidelines (more than usual) and in practice/preparation. If it is and we tank I might look at someone else. It would have to be really bad this year though. I still believe he's a good man for the job and he'd really have to go insane this year for me not to bring him back at least one more time.
|
Unless he physically assaults a player on the sideline or something like that, Haley's not going anywhere unless Pioli starts to feel his seat getting warm.
|
The interesting thing about this question is how closely Haley's fate is tied to Cassel. They both came to KC at the same time. If Cassel were to become one of the best game managers in the business, we could become a consistent contender and maybe win a SB or two and Haley will be able to stay as long as he wants. If Cassel tanks to the point Pioli finally gives up on him, it seems unlikely that Haley could stick around long enough to develop and win with a new QB. Winning quickly with Stanzi or some free agent/trade veteran QB are the only options for Haley keeping his job if Cassel tanks. Geez, no wonder Haley always seems so high strung.
|
IF we finish below .500 I want him gone. OF course, I never wanted him here in the first place so I'm biased.
Oh, and I don't give a crap if our losses are due to Cassel being injured or not. |

There is no way Haley is gonna lose his job unless he goes off the deep end. The team will be improved to the point we will be recognized by the league as up and coming. The easy schedule from last season is not in play anymore. We will sneak up on some good teams and probably lose a game to somebody we shouldn't. The important thing is to start fast and get a head start.

But I agree that Cassel will probably sooner or later be Haley's downfall, which is a shame because 1) he didn't pick him and 2) I have a feeling that overall Haley is a pretty good coach. |

After going to the Coalition first and posting the numbers showing what an anomaly Baltimore and Tampa Bay were it fell on deaf ears there. Game managers are once in a blue moon. Franchise qb's make you a SB contender every year. |

I don't penalize a qb because he had a good running team. Aikman on a more qb friendly offense would have had sick numbers. To me it's simple. Franchise qb Can we win a sb with this guy? F ya and we prob will. Game manager same question. If our defense plays well and we get the running game going....blah blah blah. |
Quote:
I went to some of Larry Csonka's college games as a kid but you have to do what wins today. And a franchise qb is number one priority. |

So what happens if Cassel takes a step back this year? Haley has to be eager to replace him right? He isn't going to place his possible last year with the team on a 5th round pick who hasn't started in the NFL.
|
Quote:
Boom. Another 7th round pick who overachieved in a backup role behind a HOF quarterback on an elite team. ITS THE CIRCLEEEEEEEEEEEE OF LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE |
Quote:
Haley really may have his coaching life stuck to a guy that Pioli brought in. That or he is going to have to hope that either Stanzi or whoever replaces Cassel, if need be, steps up. With the rest of this roster hopefully ready for a serious push in 2012, Haley can't afford to have QB issues. |

I won $5 from a friend who was a viking fan. That was serious cash for an 11 yr old back then. Cigarettes were about 30 40 cents a pack at the time. Spent it on bowling foosball and pinball and had enough left over to get a grocery bag of junk food. |
Now if we have a horrible season and Haley puts Matt on the bench, using Palko to mop up the season over Stanzi would put him in some major hot water. I really don't see anything he can do to cost himself 2012 unless he really craps out. Even a bad record probably wouldn't do it, unless he was making tons of mistakes.
|
I am biased because I like Haley but I don't want Haley being a lame duck coach in 12.
If Haley had insisted on Cassel then his fate may possibly be linked to him. We all know that wasn't the case. Even if Cassel doesn't work out he deserves a shot with Stanzi or whomever else we draft. I always looked at Cassel as a bridge from horrible to respectable and figured the next guy was going to be the one. |

If the Chiefs avoid winning the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, Haley should be extended by at least one year. If they make the playoffs, Haley should get a fat new contract.
|
Regardless of record (with limits) it depends on how the team looks overall. Do thy look improved? Do the regress? Does Haley cost us key games with bad decisions or does he win them? Etc.......
Injuries will flat destroy some teams this year, more so than usual due to the crappy off season.Record alone doesn't always tell the story. Were we to lose JC or Cassel for an extended time frame we are screwed. Bowe as well for that matter. |
Quote:
i hope/wish Haley hangs around long enough to groom his own QB..I'd like to see that |
Haley ain't goin' NOWHERE!
|
Quote:
Y'all should be glad your boss is not so critical. Comical. |
I think we should change coaches every 3 or 4 years regardless of progress. That really helps build SB winners.
|
Haley gets a C+ grade so far
|
6 or less wins - goodbye.
7-8 wins - there better be some good extenuating circumstances like injuries to Cassel, Bowe, Charles, Hali. 9 + wins - safe unless a loss or two were caused by poor coaching decisions and it keeps KC from the postseason. |
Quote:
|
I think he has to show that he can win within the division more consistantly. That is a concern IMO.

Usually it happens right away in our case it may be down the road. That's why the first move of most new coaches is to pick a qb early. |
Barring getting arrested or punching out Pioli on the sidelines, Haley is going nowhere.
Get used to it. |
Catastrophic failure.
Haley and Pioli have done wonders improving this team considering what they inherited from Herm. |
