Chiefs Buzz: Baldwin might make debut against Colts

Hooray!!

http://www.kansascity.com/2011/10/05...n-baldwin.html

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that he hopes that rookie wide receiver Jon Baldwin finally will make his regular-season debut Sunday against the Colts.

Baldwin on Wednesday was, for the first time since fracturing his thumb in a fight with teammate Thomas Jones, listed as a full participant in practice. He had been limited the last several weeks. Baldwin told reporters last week that he hoped to rejoin his teammates soon but was again made inactive for this past Sunday’s game.

“I know he’s been really working hard,” Haley said, “and I’m excited. … It’s hard to sit there on the sidelines and not get to do much. This is another kid who really cares and wants to be in there trying to help. We’ll see as the week progresses where he is.”

Baldwin was the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick this year, and he has been sidelined since the second week of the preseason. Haley said these weeks have been similar to offseason practices for Baldwin, in that he has been exposed to the team’s offense and its players, but contact and actual football work has been limited.

“Hopefully that accelerates where he is,” Haley said. “We’ll just have to see where he is physically.”

At least for now, Baldwin will work with the special-teams unit. Haley said Baldwin’s performance there could be the deciding factor on whether he is active against the Colts.

Chiefs prepare for two QBs

Colts coach Jim Caldwell indicated Wednesday that Curtis Painter is the team’s starting QB for now, but that doesn’t mean the Chiefs are ignoring the possibility that Kerry Collins could return by Sunday.

Collins was held out of Monday’s game with a concussion, and Painter started in the team’s loss to Tampa Bay.

“Kerry has not been cleared as of yet,” Caldwell said. “… Certainly at this point in time, Curtis is our starter.”

Still, Haley said the Chiefs are preparing for both.

“Just as the week goes on,” Haley said, “we’ll try to figure out how that’s going to go.”

Painter completed 13 of 30 passes for 281 yards and two TDs against the Bucs. Collins completed 49 percent of his passes and averaged 160.3 passing yards in his three starts this season.

Chiefs add practice squad running back

The Chiefs signed Shaun Draughn to their practice squad Wednesday, releasing offensive lineman Butch Lewis to make room. Draughn is a 6-foot, 205-pound rusher who spent time with Washington this season as an undrafted free agent.

Injury report

Safety Jon McGraw had a knee injury Wednesday but was a full participant in practice. Receiver Terrance Copper was out because of an illness.

For the Colts, offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo (ankle), guard Ryan Diem (ankle), defensive end Dwight Freeney (abdominal) and defensive tackles Fili Moala (ankle) and Drake Nevis (back) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. QB Collins (concussion) and linebacker Ernie Sims (knee) were limited, and tight end Brody Eldridge (knee) and guards Mike Pollak (arm) and Joe Reitz (ankle) were full participants.

Who is this Baldwin that you speak of?

Nickel D 10-06-2011 07:47 AM

...or...he might not.

TEX 10-06-2011 07:50 AM

Whatever...Next.

BoneKrusher 10-06-2011 08:12 AM

don't think he will make any difference, but whatever.

suds79 10-06-2011 08:13 AM

If he runs plenty of those 3 yard drag routes he might get a lot of targets from Cassel. :P

Demonpenz 10-06-2011 08:29 AM

Dudes a baller but a diva, the next T.O.

Unless he is going to be another Randy Moss who will carry our sorry excuse of a QB on his back, ala 2008 Patriots, Baldwin won't make a huge difference.

This is why we need a QB worth a crap. Maybe we'll have Stanzi to look forward to towards the latter end of the season.

We'll see what happens?

Its probably best if they just stick with Cassel for the entire year. Not that I support the guy by any means. Its just better for the team in general.

Stanzi is a developmental quarterback and I think its best to just let him sit and learn the pro game. At least with Cassel he could possibly make the team suck for Andrew Luck lol.

I'd take that. What I can't stand is the possibility that he's not good and is like T.O.

So the 2nd leading receiver of all time is a bad thing?

Are you implying Moss carried Brady in 2007/8?

Hootie 10-06-2011 10:42 AM

Oh yipee

he certainly didn't hurt

much like Megatron and Stafford this year

Brady threw plenty of jump balls that Moss brought down for TD's that year...

tooge 10-06-2011 10:46 AM

Unless they have him running swing passes and 5 yard routes on 3rd and ten, it won't matter anyway cuz Casshole won't ever see him

Rasputin 10-06-2011 10:50 AM

Wow this may turn from a 9 to 6 win, to a blow out of 13 to 6 win for us.

two Painter pick 6's and a Succop missed point after eh?

Okie_Apparition 10-06-2011 11:03 AM

Yeah, the only problem with the TO comparison. Is that he's the only player who admits publicly he can't stand Haley

This post was so stupid and nonsensical it actually managed to cause me physical pain while reading it. The "lol" was the icing on the cake.

I'm looking forward to all the rejects after the game calling Baldwin a bust after he has 0 catches or 1 or 2 catches for 12 yards or something.

You're ****ing kidding me right?

Bill Brasky 10-06-2011 01:43 PM

Too bad we don't have someone capable of throwing him the ball...

Chiefnj2 10-06-2011 01:55 PM

Anything less than 3 TDs like Torrey Smith did in his first game will be a big fail.

Cassel will come out of the booth again ! I think he's telegraphing less and looking beyond his first read. I think this offseason hurt Cassel more than most, he'll be back in fine form by the time we get to the brutal second half of our season. Let someone else get lucky;)

No. Not kidding. If he's like like T.O., ya put up with his shit because he can play. If he can't play, ya don't. That's what I meant.

Pasta Little Brioni 10-06-2011 03:19 PM

Sweet, can't wait to see him on the field.

Cassel has no problem throwing those moon balls to Bowe in the RedZone. Those 2 are going to be lethal inside the 20. It's the big play balls this team is in much need of.

sarcasm?

SenselessChiefsFan 10-06-2011 04:28 PM

I can't wait to see him on the field. The catch in the preseason that was ruled incomplete was pretty sick. I think the kid has crazy talent. Given that the Chiefs are without Moeaki and Charles, they NEED Baldwin.

I think this last game might have been a turning point for Cassel's season. I still think he is an average, servicable QB who can manage the game with enough talent around him.....not a Franchise QB.

I would love to get 'lucky'. Unfortunately, the Chiefs are not 0-16 bad....which is what I think it will take.

Miami will do well to win a single game.

No, you don't, and nobody has with TO before. He's crapped in his nest at almost every stop he's been in. Only the Bungles believe character doesn't matter at all.

whoman69 10-06-2011 04:45 PM

Having a receiver whose nickname is thumbs is probably not a good thing.

Baldwin and Bowe on the outside with with breaston in the middle has the potential to be sick.

I don't think we've had a slot presence since tony g.
