What? No Frank Sinatra?

Poll is flawed.

BoneKrusher 11-23-2011 02:33 PM

no Michael Schenker?

chasedude 11-23-2011 02:34 PM

S. Ray Vaughan should be above George Harrison.

I'm glad Eddie Van Halen ended up in the top 10.

Alex Lifeson @ 98 and Kurt Cobain @ 73, these should be switched.

DMAC 11-23-2011 02:36 PM

Rory Gallagher should be higher.

siberian khatru 11-23-2011 02:37 PM

Richards is too high.

As for personal favorites, Steve Howe has always made these lists. Why no more? His playing has declined, but so has Hendrix's. Should be on body of work. Howe in his heyday was outstanding.

I also wish Steve Hackett were on the list (as he sometimes is). He was tapping long before Eddie Van Halen popularized it.

No Alvin Lee or Robin Trower?

WV 11-23-2011 02:37 PM

Dimebag at #92?

Derek Trucks is the Shit though at #16.

Oh Dream Theater fans may burn down the Rolling Stones HQ.

tk13 11-23-2011 02:42 PM

These lists are always a joke anyway, although this one seems to put very little emphasis on technical playing anyway. Steve Hackett should be somewhere on this list... he was using guitar tapping years before Van Halen got credit for it. And Mark Knopfler should be higher than 44.

Clapton is in his rightful spot at #2, not much else matters to me.

Not one Jazz or Classical player? Okey-dokey.

Aries Walker 11-23-2011 03:03 PM

Eddie Van Halen should at least be top three. He's phenomenal.

And no Steve Vai anywhere is unfathomable.

FD 11-23-2011 03:04 PM

Call me old-fashioned but Robert Johnson at #71 is just ridiculous.

Backwards Masking 11-23-2011 03:11 PM

they did this exact same list 10 years ago and had a completely different order (hendrix was still #1). amazing how they can recycle the same stupid lists and get coverage for them. that said, i'm glad Paige is MUCH higher on this one than the last. Before I get the usual CP "he ripped off blues musicians on Zep I & II rhetoric (which i admit he did), keep in mind everything from III on was HIGHLY original, not to mention groundbreaking. especially Zoso-Graffeti.

TheGuardian 11-23-2011 03:13 PM

Worst ****ing list ever.

Backwards Masking 11-23-2011 03:14 PM

Oh, and Alex Lifeson got comepletely fucked (as usual). Lennon was almost 50 spots higher, that's not Beatles knock, I think Lennon is the best songwriter ever. not much of a guitar player though....

must suck being shrouded in Peart and Lee's shadows.

TheGuardian 11-23-2011 03:15 PM

No Satriani, no Vai, no Zakk Wylde...........Eric Clapton at #2......****ing stupid as ****.

Yeah Knopfler is very underrated guitarist, probably because Dire Straits' music didn't appeal to the masses all that much.

These list consist of some writer doing a google search for great guitarist and then putting Hendrix in the number 1 slot.

That list is egregiously bad. That's the Jake O'Connell of lists.

Zappa was a great guitar player and multi-dimensional as well. Played multiple stringed instruments, composer, well-versed in blues, jazz, and rock.

I'd actually put him MUCH higher on the list.

A. Rolling Stone is a garbage mag. and has been since the late '70s, so who really cares anyway.

B. Lists like these should more properly be titled Top 100 Rock and Blues Guitarists That Eveyone Has Heard Of.

Actually, Ringo was a damn fine drummer. I rank him and Richie Hayward very high in the firmament of rock percussion stars.

AustinChief 11-23-2011 05:24 PM

What a total abortion.

Ry Cooder should be in the top 10... and someone who could easily be listed at #1 isn't even on the list. Where is Leo Kottke?

They have John Fahey at #78 (which is a joke to be that low...) yet Kottke was easily a better player.

Clapton number 2??? Slow hand has Always been Way over rated. Thanks to the British Press pimping him for years as God.

Macroach 11-23-2011 05:52 PM

It's all personal taste, but I'd put Page and Beck interchangeably as 2 and 3. For me, Clapton could be somewhere in the double digits of this list.

Halfcan 11-23-2011 05:53 PM

Can't wait for the All time Best drummers list that leaves off Neil Peart.

Rush just shoved there noses in it with Live in Cleveland-so this was R S response to it-pure and simple.

All lists are bullshit if you don't preface them with any criteria.
Also, any guitar player who has a modicum of technical proficiency will be greatly offended by many of the names on this list.

Well, that's cool. He was an interesting guy, actually.

I didn't read the entire list ... just scanned it.

I guess it makes sense that the Rolling Stone would make a list made up primarily of rock guys, though ... since they're a rock magazine and all.

Honestly, Yngwie was a technician like no other but he just didn't have "it".

I didn't realize just how hollow it was until I saw my 13-year old nephew playing Guitar Hero and hammering out solos like a pro, even though he'd never played the guitar.

To Yngwie, the guitar was just like that controller with a bunch of buttons, he was just manipulating a tool like any other technician.
