Gaither expected to start tonight for chargers

It appears that for the second time in three games the Chargers will play an offensive lineman who has been with the team for just a few days.

This time, Jared Gaither is set to start at left tackle on Monday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is expected to work there in place of Brandyn Dombrowski, who did not practice this week due to a foot injury. Dombrowski has started the past two games in place of Marcus McNeill, who was placed on injured reserve this week due to ongoing neck issues.

Gaither was claimed off waivers Wednesday and practiced for the first time with the Chargers on Thursday. He was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.

Gaither is the third addition to the offensive line in three weeks. Tony Moll and Ike Ndukwe were signed prior to the team's Nov. 20 game at Chicago. Moll ended up playing 15 snaps against the Bears after Scott Mruczkowski suffered a concussion. Moll started at right guard last week against Denver.

The Chargers had also worked Tyronne Green at left tackle in practice but evidently feel better having Green at left guard. Green took over the starting job at left guard after Kris Dielman suffered a concussion Oct. 23 against the New York Jets that eventually landed him on injured reserve. But Green has missed the past two games with a hand injury.

Right guard Louis Vasquez also returns this week after missing two games due to an ankle injury.

That should be interesting to watch.

Draft implications dictate that I must root for JAX.

mcaj22 12-05-2011 05:24 PM

and Barry Richardson gets a free pass for being the worst offensive lineman in the league

Okie_Apparition 12-05-2011 05:27 PM

Could be a Kyle Orton type appearance

Hopefully he stinks up the joint.
Anything else is an indictment of this staff and FO.

If the dude plays well tonight Pioli looks like an idiot.

Deberg_1990 12-05-2011 05:37 PM

Gaither doesn't give up a sack, makes 4 pancake blocks that spring Matthews for 125 and Rivers throws for 400 and 3 TDs.

Bank on it.

No. That would be Haley.

Pioli signed him. Haley didn't play him.

You do know the GM has nothing to do with who starts and who rides the bench, right?

'Hamas' Jenkins 12-05-2011 05:40 PM

Holy shit, an Itchyass Ndukwe reference. Another sack of shit lineman who was dug in to the starting lineup like an Alabama tick due to his tree connections.

What does it matter if he cut him? He never saw the field in KC...

Big loss!

Hammock Parties 12-05-2011 05:41 PM

GM takes the hit for players who get cut and play well elsewhere. That's the job.

But you can blame everyone, too. So we'll do that.

bevischief 12-05-2011 05:41 PM

I didn't know Buck was playing tonight...

Sure he did. He went in for Albert (think it was the steeler game) and had a false start.

What the ****, we have Gaither?

He sucks so bad!

The one play I saw him in last week he came in and had a huge false start.

**** I can't believe we picked him up.

Oh well

Suck 4 Fire Norv, amirite?

whoman69 12-05-2011 06:31 PM

Pioli cut him most likely on the recommendation of Haley. I would guess because Mims was getting interest from other clubs and also because Gaither couldn't even beat out Richardson. Its a team cluster if it was wrong.

Or he could play really well and make the Chiefs organization look even more inept.

Well, if that's even possible.

He may turn out to be a blessing. Maybe Rivers gets sacked all day instead of throwing interceptions all day.

Titty Meat 12-05-2011 06:40 PM

Hopefully he plays well tonight so we can say it with me......

FIRE Pioli/HALEY

Okie_Apparition 12-05-2011 06:46 PM

This all seems eerily familiar
Chiefs cut someone & the Chargers start them

FIRE Pioli/HALEY

They actually made a good decision with Gaither I think. He's just a sorry lump of flesh with no fire.

That being said, there's plenty of other reasons to fire both of them.

BigMeatballDave 12-05-2011 06:58 PM

I fully expect him to play well.

Marcellus 12-05-2011 06:58 PM

One thing I have noticed is that out of all the players KC had dumped over the last 3 years under Pioli, hardly any of them go on to do anything good.

Waters is obviously doing fine in NE but outside of him, who has done jack and shit in the league? I may be missing some players but I can't think of any others.

Pollard went on to get released from like 2 decent defenses because he was such a liability in pass coverage. Jarrad Page has been cut a couple of times too.

Come to think of it, you might be on to something here.

'Hamas' Jenkins 12-05-2011 07:13 PM

Jason Babin became a Pro Bowl pass rusher and we set a record for rushing futility.

Caseyguyrr 12-05-2011 07:15 PM

he'll probably resurrect his career in San Diego and confirm my suspicion that Pioli/Haley are completely inept

Wade Smith comes to mind as well.

Babin went to the Eagles and was cut and it took until the 2010 season with Tennessee for him to do anything so that doesn't fit the bill of dumping a guy who turns into great player right after leaving KC.

Not sure Wade Smith fits, didn't he get silly $ to go to the Texans as a back up? I think we offered him a contract they just topped it.

The bottom line is if KC doesn't want you, you are getting cut from a team with no depth to begin with. You probably suck.

Yet we still have O'Connell, Pope, Richardson etc....

To be fair, this is almost invariably true for any team who doesn't cut someone just for cap reasons.

jspchief 12-05-2011 08:13 PM

I can't imagine we'll learn much from his play this week. 2 days of practice with a new team at left tackle?

I have to think even great tackles would struggle in similar conditions.

Of course, if he leaves the field after 1 snap for a strained labia, I guess we'll learn something.

What if he happens to dominate? Like he is currently doing. Not that Jax rush is daunting unless blitzing, but for ****s sake, with two days of practice, it doesn't matter.

Titty Meat 12-05-2011 08:32 PM

aturnis 12-05-2011 11:30 PM

I admit, I overreacted about Gaither. He did have a few hold later on, but then again, his first start... Still upset, I bet he grades out well, and is 10x the tackle Richardson is...

O.city 12-05-2011 11:30 PM

I think it comes down to he wanted to play LT.

wow, i guess i wasnt that far off the mark. Of course he played well.....only the Chiefs...

Demonpenz 12-06-2011 07:58 AM

He did pretty good and he knocked the DE out of the game. Pretty much all you can ask for out of a tackle.

BigRichard 12-06-2011 08:21 AM

I don't see how anyone can say this is on Pioli. Pioli signed him, Haley didn't play him. So as a GM, you let go of people that are not making an impact on the team. He wasn't making an impact because Haley wasn't playing him. This falls squarly on Haley.

Maybe it is because we have a glaring hole at RT and it looks like Gaither would have done much better at the position. It might also be that it seems like this staff doesn't seem to want to play the best player for the position for some ****ing reason.

From what I saw he played pretty well. I would like to know what his grade was. I don't even know where you go to get that.
