What states have you been to?
Rules: In order to count it, you have to have slept in the state or eaten a meal while not in transit (e.g., not at an airport or while driving through).
This is probably a repost of an old thread, but we need to update our files every so often. Edit: To clarify, "visited" or "been to" can also include "lived in". |
Yeah, I think we already did this.

all 50

Might go with which ones have you not been to?

I have driven into Arkansas and Illinois but never slept there or ate a non in-transit meal. |
I'm only missing two states west of the Mississippi: Louisiana and North Dakota.
I'm missing a couple of deep south states: Mississippi and Alabama I'm missing Michigan in the upper Midwest. I'm missing a couple of mid-Atlantic states: Delaware and Pennsylvania. And then all of New England is a mystery: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Most of them are states that aren't big enough to draw me on business and for some reason haven't drawn me as a tourist. I have no idea how I've missed Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Massachusetts. Those all are pretty good sized. So I'm at 37 states so far. I've had a surge in the past three or four years, picking up Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, and North Carolina. |
Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missourri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska.
|
The farthest east I've ever been is Morton, Illinois.

Living here in upstate NY I've gone way north I've gone way south but not very far west.
Someday I Will go to Arrowhead thats what will push me west one day. A buddy of mine is a driver who goes past arrowhead a couple times a yr he says by car it takes approx 23 hours driving time. The wife will of course fly for vacation but I dont see her saying sure lets fly to go see the Chiefs vs the Cardinals ..etc. But someday I'm going to ride with my friend and finally get there. |
Only 17 of them. Feels like I've been to a lot more than that,

Why have twice as many people been to Delaware as Connecticut and Rhode Island and those other smaller eastern states? How does a person even end up in Delaware? As far as state locations go, it's a dead-end street.
|
Been to almost every state in the continental 48, (except the extreme NE and NW). Lived in the following:
Cali (twice) Indiana Kansas Nebraska (three times) Illinois Michigan Georgia (for a very short time) Grew up military Posted via Mobile Device |

Also north on I-95 from DC area to NJ/NY goes right through Delaware, did it several times. I-95 is the major north/south highway. If you go from NY to Florida you can't help but pass through it. |

Been fortunate to travel and move a lot so only missing Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska. I can tell you from living in NJ that Delaware has a great school and some decent golf courses. Can't stand the CT and Rhode Island is only useful if you don't want to spend the money staying overnight at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

I don't subscribe to your destination rule. For instance, I've never specially traveled anywhere in Nebraska (seriously, who has?), but I drove the length of that vile barren sonofabitch from the southeastern tip to the northwestern tip, and it was horrible and took hours, and by God I'm counting it. :harumph:

Damn. I've been, like, nowhere. Outside of the northeast, I've only been to Alaska, Hawaii, California, Florida, Ohio, and Kentucky (a working weekend in Louisville where I did nothing but spend two nights in a movie theater).

Only 27.
My dad has been in every state in the union but of course he was in the military for 40 years. |

Well, other than the one you disagree with. |
The fascinating thing is that this poll has made a fundamental change as more people have responded to it. Early on, the leaders after Missouri were adjacent states to Missouri - Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Tennessee, etc.
But as more people have responded, the tourist states have suddenly jumped past the adjacent states. California, Florida, and Colorado have come on very strongly. I'm not sure what Texas counts as, but it's made an enormous run. I suspect it's part tourism, and maybe mostly tourism, though I'm not sure what you do as a Texas tourist. Or maybe it's a big enough state that a lot of people have friends and relatives who move there. |

But big ass states like Nebraska or Pennsylvania that take many hours to cross, or piddling states that I've driven through many times, like Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey - sorry, I'm counting them. Been there, done that, stopped for gas, had meals, was generally bored out of my mind for long stretches. |
Quote:
I understand the point. I wonder if perhaps an amendment to the rule is that you spend more than eight consecutive hours in the state, or that you have more than one consecutive meal. But then again, did you really visit the state, or did you just accidentally end up there? |
Quote:
Same thing with Pennsylvania, which (other than two cities) is basically Nebraska with trees. |
