One of the three early ACL injuries for the Kansas City Chiefs came to a pretty important player -- RB Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs star running back tore his ACL against the Detroit Lions in Week 2 and that's a season-ending injury so, like S Eric Berry and TE Tony Moeaki, we haven't seen much of Charles this year.

But the Chiefs running back does indeed live on. He did a podcast with ESPN's Fantasy Football crew this week and they asked him when he would be able to return from his ACL injury.

"I think I should be ready by OTA's, working out with the team," Charles said (via Arrowhead Addict). "I got hurt early so I had a lot more time to like, to get myself back and it only takes six months. So by the time OTA's it should be like eight, seven months."

That would be sometime in May or June, which is great news for the Chiefs. It's never a good time for a player to tear an ACL but I suppose a positive out of this situation is that all three of those guys suffered the injury early in the year which gives them lots of time to rehab and get back at it next offseason.

O.city 12-14-2011 10:06 AM

Well this is good news.

gblowfish 12-14-2011 10:07 AM

Even if we get him back at 80% of what he was, that's better than anything we're trotting out there now.

WV 12-14-2011 10:07 AM

Did they have a translator for him at the podcast?

O.city 12-14-2011 10:08 AM

I think he will be fine. Look at Welker. I'd compare his game alot to the way Charles moves around.

suds79 12-14-2011 10:08 AM

That's good to hear. Guys come back from that injury better than ever with advances in tech.

Still, stating the obvious I know, we've got to draft at some point a legit back to split time with him since the life of a RB is so short in this league.

fan4ever 12-14-2011 10:10 AM

How likely is it he'll be diminished? I expect him to play tentatively for a while, but do players make it back all the way from these kind of injuries? Any examples of who's come back full force? This isn't a part of football I've paid much attention to, but I sure will next year.

DMAC 12-14-2011 10:19 AM

If guys in my over 30 soccer league can come back to full strength...an elite NFL running back can.

O.city 12-14-2011 10:21 AM

Wes Welker had the same injury and came back fine.

I know running backs have a little different life after this normally but most of the examples we have seen are older guys. Charles is what 25?

Hammock Parties 12-14-2011 10:22 AM

Clark Hunt is cheap. He probably skimped on the surgery. Pioli will draft a RB with our 1st pick and we'll be stuck with Cassel.

Normally Rb's don't came back healthy until 2 years ago the ACL.

Reerun_KC 12-14-2011 10:24 AM

We need a shit ton of help at the RB position..

It wasn't until his 2cd year after the surgery before he looked like the Wes Welker we all know

I thought he had a really good year that first year back?

Also he played in game 1 the season after tearing it in January.

An ACL injury ruined Terrell Davis' career. :(

I hope all these injuries were a blessing in disguise, that we can move on from Cassel an dumbassery coaching in Todd Haley.

Next year should be fun.

Remember Edge James before the Knee Injury? Total beast Mode. After the injury, he was a very solid back, no where near the explosiveness, but still very solid.

Knowmo, this is Charles first run in wiht knee problems. He has had shoulder problems but that seems to have been resolved.

It seems Thomas has come back from the achlilles thing pretty well.

RBs are a dime a dozen these days and every team needs at least 2. JC is a stud but they all break early in today's game.
I wanted to shoot McDaniels in the head with a flaming aids bullet when he drafted Moreno so high.

This is true but more for average to good backs.

Charles is an elite back in the league, IMO. Hope he comes back fine. But it doens't matter if we still have Cassel handing him the ball.

Charles is a stud; had him on my fantasy team the last 2 years.
I was just thnking how RBs just don't last long anymore which is why McDaniels was a reerun to waste a 1st round draft pick on one. Teams just don't do that near as much as they used to. Now you pick up a couple and plan on one going down.

Since the injury was early in the season he will have more recovery time than a player who gets injured late in the year and have surgery in the offseason. He may not be 100%, but he should be further along than most.

I built a machine type of deal using a step-ladder, some manilla rope, and an inner tube.

Works pretty well so long as I don't forget to put my socks on first.

Well, if you're like me and Mr. Iowanian, you're always looking for some helpful household hints.

For example, just the other day I figured out that you can hide behind your shrubberies and nail neighbor cats with your .22 without being seen, so long as you do it at night.

O.city 12-14-2011 06:26 PM

This is great to hear.

Seems like I remember Berry tweeting something similiar. I'll try and find it.

O.city 02-03-2012 11:21 AM

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles tweeted Friday morning that he had cleats back on for the first time since undergoing ACL surgery.

"(F)elt weird but I'm gettin back into it," Charles wrote.

The Chiefs lost their star running back in Week 2, when he tore his ACL. It appears he's recovering on schedule, so with almost a full year between the injury and the 2012 season opener, he should be fully recovered for Week 1.

Only time will tell when Charles will be up to full speed, though. Quite often that doesn't happen until the second season back from a torn ACL. Nonetheless, since he racked up nearly 2,000 combined yards in 2010, he's going to be an intriguing early-round draft option in 2012 for fantasy owners willing to throw caution to the wind.

You can rush back from an ACL, but a better plan, to maximize recovery, would be to take it more slowly.

I would hope that the Chiefs limit the workload on Charles, Berry and Moeaki until the early preseason.

If handled correctly, it's very possible that all 3 could come back 100%, with no issues.
