Common Names

We've looked at data before on how common different names are, but this is a pretty cool graphic view of it. Click here and enter your name or your alias: http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyage...se&exact=false

What's cool is that you can also enter partial names. For example, enter the letter "O" and you can see how much less common "O" names are now. In contrast, enter the letter "Z" and see the opposite. Kind of fun to check out. Not like roller coaster fun or flag football fun, but fun if you're procrastinating a deadline.

Sofa King 12-14-2011 10:59 PM

I tried to find Luv's name in there, but it kept saying "No names starting with 'SLOTHWHORE' ranked in the top 1000 in any time period"

ClevelandBronco 12-14-2011 11:00 PM

Mine has gone from statistically virtually nonexistent when my parents chose it to occurring about 150 times per million today for boys.

The way the chart changes as letters are entered is cool as all get out.

pr_capone 12-14-2011 11:02 PM

My name does not appear on the list. Not surprised though, I have only known one other person with the same first name and that was my father.

Mr Rainman you always have the most interesting links. I have already forwarded two today to others.

Bugeater 12-14-2011 11:48 PM

No names starting with 'BUG' ranked in the top 1000 in any time period.

I am curious as to why Rain Man would be visiting a website such as this, is there a Rain Baby on the way?

You should see the ones that I don't show people. They'll blow your mind.

Earthling 12-14-2011 11:57 PM

I recently lost my VA card and had to fill out a form to get another. For a joke I wrote in "Killer hands of death" on the line that asked me for any alias's I might have had. They never even looked up or said anything, just typed it in on the new office form. Must be official now since its on a Gov document. ;)
Oh and I can't find that alias used anywhere else.

007 12-15-2011 12:04 AM

My username was a big fat ZERO.

My real name hit 409 in the 1960's and seems to have gone non existent since the 80s

Peaked at 470 in the 80's.

Why is everyone naming their ****ing kids "Aiden" or something that rhymes with it? Who started this mess?

I was shocked at all the Alyssa's out there.

Fairplay 12-15-2011 02:34 AM

Name them a common name so they can get a job.

Stewie 12-15-2011 08:11 AM

My name is very common. It was #1 for years and now is around 20.

I put in some random names that are uncommon and it's funny how TV personalities influence the name game. Giada was non-existent until it took off in 2007.

Frosty 12-15-2011 08:59 AM

My first name was hugely popular around the turn of the last century but has dropped off to near zero (probably because people are spelling it differently now). I go by my middle name, though, and it is almost the exact opposite. It was almost nonexistent up until around the time I was born (early '60's) and then became very common by the '80's.

loochy 12-15-2011 09:13 AM

WTF THIS THING SUCKS!! I can't put apostrophes in the name field! How the hell am I supposed to look ridiculous made up names like La'Ron or Moni'que?

Frankie 12-15-2011 12:26 PM

Mark the circle that says girls and try a dude name like Kevin or David. this thing is probably bogus. Sorry Kevin.

Not many people used to be named "Ghey"

If you look at the scale on the right and compare male Davids to female Davids, I think you get a good feel for the incidence of data entry error in hospitals.

You've inhaled too much hog cum. :shake:

Dayze 12-15-2011 12:42 PM

mine is virtually non-existent. Hit its' peak in the 70's (when I was born). I don't even see it registered after 2007.

It's funny how some men's names get co-opted by the women over time. I have a great uncle who's name is Jewell, which was a fairly common mens name up until the 1930's. Carroll was another one.

My middle name - Ryan - and my brother's name - Kyle - are both becoming more and more common girls names. :#

Carroll is not the same as Carol.

How about Cameron, as in Diaz?

Lynn is another one. I've known male Lynns, but they tend to be older, and then the women took it and ran with it.

No, but Carol is a feminized version of Carroll. Carol was virtually non-existent until the 1920's, about the point Carroll starting falling from favor

My mom, my sister and my wife all have Lynn for a middle name. LMAO

You mean not even two. There's clearly 1 unless you were born before 1880, then that wouldn't show up in these stats.

Oh and I can't find that alias used anywhere else.

Did they send a copy to the Redundancy Department of Redundancy?

Setsuna 12-15-2011 02:15 PM

The 1980s rank was 97. And Wesley was popular in the 800 millions. But now down to 600. I'll take it! Oh and my name sounds intelligent and friendly the most, according to polls. Sexy is a close second though. All true btw.

Dartgod 12-15-2011 02:41 PM

Mine was #1 in the 1930's, #5 when I was born and #55 now.

In fact, it was in the Top 10 for an entire century.

Edward is becoming a popular woman's name. So is Michael.

No, but Gaylord had like a 30 year run of popularity if you look at the graph.

Adolph drops off drastically in the 40's.

WhiteWhale 12-15-2011 03:25 PM

Heh.

My name basically fell completely out of use between 1900 and 1960.

Became far more popular in the 90's and is still trending upward.

I've never personally met anyone with the same name.

I had an uncle for a while (my aunt's ex) whose name was Gaylord. Not many people actually knew that and he went by his initials. I can't imagine why. LMAO
