Dave Campo Named Defensive Coordinator For Kansas Football

notorious 01-13-2012 02:10 PM

Wasn't he the head coach for Dallas a few years ago?

Yes.

Aikman begged Jones to fire Gailey and hire campo because he wanted to run the Coryell/turner/zampese offense.

Jones did, and the Cowboys didn't win anymore.

Good move.

Not sexy, but smart...

sedated 01-13-2012 02:43 PM

should be great for recruiting Texas.

Why would i have a link to something that happened in the 90's?

Besides, it's common knowledge.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thought Gailey's offensive system was not using Aikman's talents. So Jones dumped him after two seasons and brought back Jack Reilly as offensive coordinator. Reilly then hired Ernie Zampese, the Cowboys former offensive coordinator, as a consultant.

Aikman maintains he didn't try to get Gailey fired, and Hellestrae thinks his friend is getting a bad rap.

"Troy purposely stayed away from all of that. He didn't go into Jerry (Jones) and say, 'I want a new offense and I want Chan fired.' "

But because Aikman wasn't a fan of Gailey's system and was outspoken about the previous head coach, Barry Switzer, he has shouldered much of the blame for the coaching change.

He is a full on reerun. Remember him on "hard knocks?"

Stewie 01-13-2012 03:06 PM

Excellent hire!

No I just remember how stupid he is.

ChiTown 01-13-2012 03:08 PM

I'm sensing a real Bill Callahan, UNL feel to all of this. Good luck.

Lzen 01-13-2012 03:13 PM

I like this hire. The guy has a lot of experience in college and the pros. And he did well in both.

Lol. They didn't hire him to be HC.

No, your other NFL guy was.

Meh, could be. But after everything CW has said about learning from his past mistakes as well as what he appears to have done differently this time, I'm excited. I think this will be a very good thing.

Lzen 01-13-2012 03:24 PM

Also, Callahan was just a beneficiary of Gruden's coaching expertise as well as having a very good, veteran squad in the NFL. When Gruden left, Callahan was exposed. And don't even mention the SB because I think you could have probably coached that veteran group to the SB that year. What did he do after that?

We both know that Weis's story is a whole lot different than that.

DaWolf 01-13-2012 05:01 PM

Walks into Texas HS kid's house, "Hi, I'm Dave Campo, and I've won three rings coaching defense for the Dallas Cowboys."

I'm trying to think of another DC that KU could have hired that would get us in the door of some good defensive talent in Texas with a pitch like that.

It's all going to come down to whether these guys can get players onto campus to visit and get some talented players to pick us over the next tier of schools after Texas and Oklahoma. If so, great hire...

That would still be an improvement for KU football.

Braincase 01-13-2012 07:02 PM

If it's a success, great for KU. If it's a fail, well, the AD did go to K-State.

Yes, 70, 66, 59, 61, 59, and 55 are much better than 76.

P.S. I'm not including the 6 games in the 40's.

I dunno. Someone made the point of Callahan being better. I don't see it.

Gill sucked. Callahan sucked. And now it's all over.

I can't regret something that I had nothing to do with.

But if you're wondering if I'm happy Gill is gone, the answer is yes.
