Clash of the Sitcoms: Round 1, Heat 10.
 

This one's going to be a fun competition. Remember that you can pick three.

South Park and Urkel were no brainers. Friends got a sympathy vote from me.

My thoughts:

#1 - Friends, by a wide margin. Chandler was my favorite character, but as the series went on I liked Joey more and more. This was a top-shelf show.

#2 - I was tempted to not vote for a #2, because none of the other shows did a lot for me. I'm going to throw a vote the direction of F Troop, because it was Gilligan's Island before Gilligan's Island was invented. Put some guys in a fort in the middle of nowhere, have a fat boss and a skinny sidekick, and every week someone visits them and hilarity ensues.

#3 - Eh, I feel like I should enjoy South Park, but I really don't. In concept it seems great, but I can't understand their voices half the time and the animation doesn't exactly enthrall me. I'll vote for them, but only because I have excess votes.

Didn't make the cut.

The Jetsons. When I was four I would've voted for them instantly.

Family Matters. I never knew the name of this show. In fact, I didn't really think about the fact that it was a show. I thought it was just Urkel. Nothing against it, but I never watched it because it looked kind of cheesy with, you know, Urkel.

1. South Park - best cartoon ever and still hilarious
2. The Jetsons - this was epic in the 80's for kids
3. Family Matters - Urkell, watching it when I was a little lad
4. F-Troop - I can't really remember much but I remember that I watched it.
5. Friends - most over rated, over acted, crap show of all time.

Friends was a consistently great show for a long time. It had some really classic episodes and I loved the way various strands of story would come together, one way or another, in the end. The final episode was terribly disappointing, but Larry David made up for it with the Seinfeld reunion concept in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I gave the Jetsons a probably undeserved vote just because I felt generous.

F-Troop was another show that I liked as a child but can't vote for here.

I've never been a fan of Southpark. I did watch an episode about World of Warcraft once that was pretty darned funny though.

Family Matters doesn't register in my memory at all although I know who Urkel is. I always wondered how he got famous.

The Jetsons was on in the 80s? I watched it as a little kid around 1970 and it seemed like it had been on for a long time even then.

F Troop and The Jetsons - nothing else comes close to making the cut.

Storch and Tucker were a pretty good duo, and I was always hoping Captain Parmenter would end up with Wrangler. Chief Wild Eagle and Crazy Cat were hilarious. LMAO

The Flintstones were the prehistoric Honeymooners, and The Jetsons were the Sci Fi Flintstones. Sometimes imitation is a very sincere form of flattery, and it can also work.

Friends is the Logo channel version of Seinfeld. Sometimes imitation doesn't work.

South Park is great for people who like poorly animated children spouting soft core porn language.

I don't even know what the hell Family Matters is.

South Park is probably the best satire on TV ever.

My daughter watches South Park when I'm in the room. About 10% of it is funny and 100% is annoying as hell.

I feel sad for people that don't think South Park is funny.

I'm not sure South Park would even make my top list of cartoons. You've got the Simpsons, Archer, and likely Family Guy and even Futurama ahead of it, and I'm sure there's another good one I'm forgetting.

Yup it is funny because there is nothing that is off limits to make fun of.

That's funny the first couple times you see it. When they do it every episode, the shock wears off and you are left with a lot of material that isn't that funny delivered in the most irritating way imaginable.

South Park used to be great. The fact that it's still on is a testament to its greatness.

F-Troop I used to watch as a kid on Nick at Night. Completely forgot about it until I saw it on the list. That show was great.

The Jetsons was super cool to watch when I was a kid, so it got a nostalgia vote.

I went back and forth on Friends and ended up pulling the trigger.

South Park and Friends this round.

The voices are hard to understand. It reminds me of some of my foreign-born teaching assistants in college.

I had a math professor in college named Jingbo Xia. One class he kept saying, "Siganer" and I was thinking, "What the hell is a siganer?" Then he finally wrote, "signal" on the chalkboard.

My wife had a professor who would say "neft" all the time, it took a while to figure out that it meant "negative". We use neft randomly for fun now.

At any time of the day, there is an episode of Friends airing on some channel.

I could watch Friends 24/7 I think.

Are you referring to Cartman? He has the voice of an angel.

Not really sure how Jetsons and South Park are sitcoms but whatever.

Don't know if you are going to put it in another poll...but...SOAP.. was a funny sitcom.

Friends has a lot of good episodes. And Aniston in the first few years was about as hot as a woman can possibly be, I think.

Exactly. If you DIDN'T watch Friends and their ice-cold sets featuring Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, you should turn in your man card.

Guess I touched a nerve. Won't argue that Aniston at that time was about as hot as they come. And if that was one's driving force for watching it, fine.

Just seemed a lot like a chick/soap opera show to me. Ross & Rachel on again, off again, the cast mixing & matching going out until the writers ran out of combinations, etc.

That show was great when it was true to the title: Friends. When they started the round-robin process of all dating each other it went downhill, I agree. However, they generally followed the Seinfeld rule of always having a couple of different story lines, so the other story line was usually still pretty good.

But yeah, when the characters start dating each other, that means they're running out of ideas. As someone mentioned earlier, the great thing about Seinfeld was that they never resorted to dating each other.

I obviously only watched very little parts of the show but what you explained I can easily see.

Just about any good sitcom I can think of that I've liked were great in seasons 1 & 2, then go downhill. It happens to all of them. The writers simply used their best material early on. Can't keep telling the same jokes.

Jerry and Elaine knocked it out. But that s what was great about the show, it didn't hurt it at all.

It makes one wonder if there's a good model of replacing writers one at a time every couple of years to bring in fresh blood. However, seeing the quality of most comedies, I guess I would posit that there aren't a whole lot of good comedy writers out there, or at least they would bring in different styles that wouldn't give a show any consistency.

Curb hit its peak about season three and has kept it going with only a few dips here and there

I'm one of the few people who can't stand South Park. I remember when it first aired when I was in junior high or high school. Everybody thought it was the greatest thing ever, but I never could get into it. Something about it just annoys the hell out of me.

I may be one of the few but I absolutly despise friends. Except Jennifer Aniston. So Family Matter, SouthPark and The Jetsons for me.

Only two choices for me.

1. Friends - I know it's not cool, but I always loved this show. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I'm pretty sure I've seen every episode.

2. South Park - I don't watch it religiously, but I've seen some hilarious episodes.

Is Friends the first show in tv where there is not a lead character? Think about it, there was no one star, they were a true ensemble. And I personally wanted to **** Monica more in the beginning.

I'd lean more toward either WKRP or Barney Miller as the first. Both of those had nominal leads (Barney Miller and Andy Travis), but the leads were generally not the center of the story line.

I liked that the Friends cast all agreed to never accept a "Best Lead Actor" award nomination, though. They would only take Supporting Actor nominations.

Taxi didn't really have a lead. I guess Judd Hirsch would be the formal lead.

I wouldn't say Soap had a lead. Or the Brady Bunch either, really.

Okay, let's call it a day. Moving on are South Park, Friends, and the Jetsons.

I tagged Friends and South Park.

I really have to be in the right frame of mind for South Park, otherwise I find it very annoying. But I think they bring some ideas to the table that are worth rewarding with a vote.
