How Many Facebook Friends Do You Have? Study Links Narcissism and Facebook Activity
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blog...-abc-news.html
For the average narcissist, Facebook is tool that may promote anti-social behavior. Facebook "offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships and emotionally detached communication," according to study by Western Illinois University professor Christopher Carpenter. The study was published this month in Personality and Individual Differences, the official journal of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences. In the study, Carpenter defined narcissism as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and an exaggerated sense of self-importance," according to a press release from the university. Using a Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Carpenter and his students surveyed 292 people - most of whom were college students - to measure "self-promoting" Facebook behavior, such as people posting status updates, their photos, updating profile information; as well as "anti-social behaviors," including seeking social support more than providing it, getting angry when others do not comment on status updates and retaliating against negative comments. People who score higher on the inventory promoted themselves more on Facebook - by tagging themselves and updating their newsfeeds more frequently, and by having more friends on Facebook, according to a report in the Guardian newspaper. The study concluded that grandiose exhibitionism correlated with anti-social behavior on Facebook. Self-esteem was negatively related to self-promotion and anti-social behaviors on the site. "In general, the 'dark side' of Facebook requires more research in order to better understand Facebook's socially beneficial and harmful aspects in order to enhance the former and curtail the latter," Carpenter said. Social media sites, particularly Facebook and Twitter, have long been criticized for being vehicles for meaningless relationships, and have recently been mentioned in connection with making bullying easier and more pervasive. |
I just made a cup cake!
Friend ME! |

I have 92 friends on FB. |
Yea if you friend people in that manner I could see that.
|
just attended a lunch where the topic was social media. The average facebook account has 130 friends. The fastest growing segment is 55+ women.
|
1412. Which every time I see that, it seems odd to me because it doesn't feel like I know that many people.

I joined after the Japan Earth Quake to make sure my friends over there were cool. Then I started getting all this Friend Request from peeps I never like back in High School. I dropped that shit. It is a marketing tool and a big waste. |
what does it mean when you pretty much ignore facebook because you find it stupid and annoying?

I don't pay any attention to the number. A lot. I spend a lot of time there. In fact, my CP experience has diminished due to FB time.

1083 FB friends
4967 followers on Twitter. |
.Have no idea have many friends I have. Before my pc died I was on there about 3 hours a day, since then only once or twice a week anymore.

Well I have 3 Facebook accts. One for personal, one for KOMP and one The Blaze.
I think I have 400 on my personal, about 400 on The Blaze and about 4500 on KOMP. I cant even keep up with my peeps on KOMP facebook. |

I can finally feel good about the fact that I only have three Facebook friends, two of which may or may not be porn spammers.

I don't use facebook really but I admit that I get probably too much gratification when I post something on twitter and it gets retweeted a bunch of times or if someone of note retweets it or follows me. It doesn't gain you anything though, it's like candy.
|
I have a little over 200 last time I checked. I think the number I have is due to the life I have lived. I have a bunch of friends that were lost to me because we were Army brats and FB has put us back in contact and I have met up with quite a few of them since. Another group of friends are guys I served with while I was in the military. We have a Unit page and are planning a reunion that I am looking forward to. Then I have the local friends and a few that I have gamed with online for years. I don't understand all of the negativity towards FB, but then again I don't spend more that a few minutes on average per day on it.
|
No shit.
People are obsessed with themselves. |
I glance at a page when my wife is on and think,"Who the **** cares, and who the **** thinks that anyone cares about their daily lives?"
You would have to really think the world revolves around you to do that shit. |
I have 1739 friends.

Don’t have a Facebook account.
Only reason I ever had a MySpace account is because Mrs. Radar signed me up for one. |

I much prefer Twitter. I can follow people (mostly sports related) and not have to have them be my friend. I think I follow around 100 writers, players, coaches, etc.
As for Facebook, I joined about three years ago and check it about once a week. Pretty much worthless and really annoying. It's just as the story says. It's dominated by narcissistic people posting things no one cares about. I have about 30 friends and it's dominated by about 3-4 people that never have anything to offer other than, "Look at me! Look at me!" |

You guys have to learn to unsubscribe from the people who are attention whores. Some people post really interesting stuff sometimes.

I enjoy it to keep in touch with family and a few co-workers. The private group function is what I use the most and have a little over 100 friends, not sure the exact number.
|
|
I try to keep my friend list to around 100, it's overdue for some pruning right now. What I don't get is the people that send friend requests, and then you never hear another ****ing thing from them. That drives me nuts more than the attention whores.
|
I use mine to keep in touch with family, coworkers, my professional community, friends, high school and college classmates, and my students.
Oh, and a few nutjobs I know from bulletin boards. |
104 friends and about 80 of those I don't like or talk too.

Oh- I have 85 friends on FB. There are about 5 that I did not meet in real life first.

That's not surprising. |

I had roughly 130 friends when I decided 128 of them annoyed the **** out of me and deleted my page. Every now and then one of them will say hey I haven't seen you on fb much lately and I tell them yeah I haven't had a page in 2 years. For some reason the subsequent look of confusion and the "oh" I get amuses me more than anything they ever said on fb. That said, I think fb is a fantastic tool for businesses and we use it a lot for that. Btw great username LMAO |

349.
A ton of people I met in college and don't really talk to anymore and/or only partied with. I hide people like it's going out of style though. Attention whores are immediately deleted from my feed and I subscribe to the interesting friends I have. |

About 250. I have family and friends all over the country and I use Facebook to keep in touch with everyone. I think it's great because I can see what my people are up to whenever I have time.
I also use it to organize and promote a weekly bike ride and our flag football league is organized there as well. I have a few friends who are too cool for fb and they are always bitching because they never know when/where we are riding. **** those guys. |
Its cool for catching up with old friends and sharing funny pics and shit like that. The down side to FB are the people who complain and bitch constantly. I just block their feeds. Other than that its, just like Chiefsplanet.....
