Manning to Tulsa?

Reports (aka, rumors) throughout KS and OK tonight that Danny Manning may become the next Head Coach at Tulsa. Following in the steps of Bill Self.

We may need some new coaches for next year. Hopefully we can bring on some strong recruiters.

It would be nice if these things could wait until after a team is done playing for the year. Just sayin.

Danny deserves a HC job though so if he takes one, his new team will become my second favorite.

Tulsa has been an awesome stepping stone job. Nolan Richardson, Bill Self, and Tubby Smith. Especially with OU and OSU in the tank. It's a pretty nice first job if you ask me.

There's a certain symmetry to Manning going to Oklahoma and Self coming to Kansas.

Still.

We NEED Danny Manning. Our big men have been absolutely mercurial under his tutelage.

Quick! Give him a nice heafty raise and the title of Assistant Head Coach! Tell him the job is his when Bill retires. I mean a what.... 30 year wait isn't THAT long.

Still baffled why the **** didn't we hire this guy?

Shogun 03-27-2012 06:37 PM

@JBBauersfeld Close

Barry Hinson may be going to Southern Illinois sooner than later. A source at KU tells me that he may not travel w/ KU to the Final Four.

ChiefMojo 03-27-2012 07:49 PM

Well to be fair Hinson is the Players Op. So technically he isn't a bench guy. If he has to leave to get a head start on the SIU job, then so be it. Great for Barry!

As for Danny, it will pain me greatly to see him leave the KU bench but in reality we need him to take a head coaching job some place if he ever wants to be the successor to Bill Self. The Tulsa job would actually be perfect for Danny. It is a very good mid-major job that is in close proximity to Lawrence. If Scott Sutton were to get the job, then I think the Oral Roberts job would be a good one for Danny also.

Manning leaving scares me to death though.

The positions coached my Manning have been the backbone of the team.

Buehler445 03-27-2012 08:00 PM

I would cry like bitch.

Dr. Johnny Fever 03-27-2012 08:02 PM

Danny leaving would ALMOST feel like sending him out to get some on the job training for an eventual return to KU. Then again Bill is a young guy and probably/hopefully isn't going anywhere for a long time.

trndobrd 03-27-2012 08:32 PM

I wonder if he goes to Tulsa if he will be tempted to change his name:

"Seriously, guys, I'm a grown man, it's Dan. Dan Manning."

Great Expectations 03-27-2012 09:28 PM

Tulsa is a better job than Nebraska, and Self's turning Neb's offer down to stay there shows that he agrees.

Tulsa also has a much more impressive post season resume than a lot of schools out there.

I agree as much as I'd hate to see him go. A framed front page of the Topeka Capital-Journal from 1988 hangs to my right as I post. The top picture is Danny driving on Stacy King and the bottom picture is Milt Newton going up for a layup. The headline is "Kansas Wins NCAA Championship." I've had it on a wall where ever I'ved lived since that day.

True but Danny's recruiting efforts and work with the bigs should not be under-rated. It takes a team effort on the floor and on the bench. Would Aldrich have been what he was without Manning? Withey? I doubt it regarding Withey.

I don't underrate it, but Manning moving on was always inevitable in my mind. KU can withstand losing him.

Again I agree, just really appreciate all he's done under the radar for the team. We'll need someone killer to replace him. I'm sure Bill knows a guy.

Thig Lyfe 03-27-2012 11:36 PM

Tulsa will be Manning's head coaching undergrad. Then he'll move on to a bigger program (Illinois?) before finally coming home when Self retires or otherwise moves on.

Extra Point 03-28-2012 07:17 AM

If Aldrich is smart enough, he'd ask to be involved in coaching at KU, upon Manning's departure.

Good luck, Mr. Manning, wherever you be.

You do realize that Manning/Self are roughly the same age. If Self stays until retirement, I doubt Manning is the choice to succeed him.

I guess its just insurance in case Self makes that jump to the NBA that people occasionally bring up.

I think it would be awful to lose Danny, he’s definitely our 2nd most important coach behind Self, but if it what he wants to do then best of luck to him.

I think Self would have won there and been able to get Nebraska their first ever NCAA tournament win, but he obviously wouldn't have experienced the same level of success. He probably would have wound up back at Okie State, or Indiana/UCLA type of a job.

If Self goes to the NBA, it will be to coach one team, the San Antonia Spurs, where his boss would be his college best-friend and roommate R.C. Buford.

Every year after the Spurs are eliminated I nervously wait to see if Coach Popovich is retiring. That roster is getting old & Popovich is 60+, I don't see him staying through a major rebuilding effort the team is going to have to undergo in a couple of years.

Why would you go to the NBA? It makes no sense.

He will get more money at KU. I guarantee there's going to be another fat contract extension.

Besides, college coaches can stay in a job for 20 years. He is virtually untouchable at Kansas. he can get University Presidents fired. In the NBA, you're just a part of the carousel. And even if you wanted to go, why the HELL would anyone want to take over for Popvich? Duncan retires, Ginobili and Parker get older. Totally on the downhill. No thanks.

Maybe I'm being naive, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

unless it's some kind of personnel goal, i see no reason to go to the NBA now that the college coaches are making so much.

If you piss off the wrong player you get fired in the NBA ... it's stupid.

That Laker coach is done ... he benched some guys to try to exert a little control and he'll get fired for it.

NBA Coaches are baby sitters, and Self has built an empire at Kansas.

Who was it that said the KU/Mizzou games would be over if Mizzou went to the SEC?

He said it with confidence, I think that was very telling on his priorities. He will retire from KU IMO.

sedated 03-28-2012 02:19 PM

The only thing that worries me comes from a quote I heard from Self when he was recently talking about taking the KU job back in 2003:

When Self asked if he thought he should not take the KU position, his father said, "No, if you're scared to follow [Roy], you're right, I don't think you should take it." Self added that "basically (he) told me I was soft, which is a good call, because I was being soft." So Self went ahead, accepted the Kansas job.

If he sees it as his next big challenge, then he may not care about what he has established here.

Sources: Danny Manning to Tulsa

Kansas assistant coach Danny Manning has agreed to become the next head coach at Tulsa, sources close to the situation told ESPN's Neil Everett.

Manning, 45, has been an assistant at Kansas since March 2007 and is in his ninth season as part of the Jayhawks staff.

He's also Kansas' all-time leading scorer and rebounder, with 2,951 points and 1,187 boards from 1984-88. He spent 15 seasons in the NBA, averaging 14 points per game.

The Jayhawks play Ohio State on Saturday in the Final Four.

Tulsa fired Doug Wojcik on March 11 after a 17-14 season. Wojcik never took Tulsa to the NCAA tournament despite having six consecutive winning seasons.

Mr. Laz 03-28-2012 05:54 PM

everybody wants to break the story. That's partly what cost KSU Gary Patterson.

Hate to see Danny go but completely understand. Good for him. I echo the sentiments wishing him the best of luck. (just don't knock us out in the tourney Dan heh) Maybe he'll get the chance to come back home one day.

I do hate the timing. I hope rather than be a distraction the team adopts a "lets win this thing for Danny" attitude" or something. I'm have no doubt they're focussed but still... I hate even one little distraction right now.
