Best BBQ Sauce in KC

Who has the best bbq sauce? Gates got beat 4-1 against Bryant's on the travel channel today.

What's your fav KC sauce? Today is a slow day here. I got my clip....I got my gun lets go find the haters.

I like Gates myself, but I have not tried any other sauce lol.

BigMeatballDave 05-07-2012 08:16 PM

KC Masterpiece

LOL

Shogun 05-07-2012 08:16 PM

That's all I had when I was young. Corn dogs and KC Masterpiece. Wasn't much of a ketchup kid. Got burnt out quick on KCM

Reaper16 05-07-2012 08:39 PM

I'm pretty reserved with sauce. But I think my honest favorites belong to Oklahoma Joe's; Night of the Living + brisket is pretty damn nice. I also am a fan of the celery salt-heavy L.C.'s sauce.

In58men 05-07-2012 08:47 PM

Holy shit I just went to ABs website to purchase some of their BBQ sauce, talk about over priced. I got 3-18oz jars from Gates for $27. Shipping was like $13 though.

sedated 05-07-2012 08:51 PM

Depends on what it's being used with.

I like heywards for a more standard sauce, jack stack for a little sweetness.

I've had one from Alaska called brown bear that was pretty good.

morphius 05-07-2012 08:53 PM

Ok Joes Night of the Living BBQ Sauce

headsnap 05-07-2012 08:53 PM

I like Jack Stack on my Brisket and Gates on my pork...

the local hardware store here in Prospect, KY(just outside of Louisville) stocks Gates sauce!!! WOO-HOO!!!!

dilligaf 05-07-2012 08:54 PM

Gates is good...but Oklahoma Joes is the best I've ever had!

gblowfish 05-07-2012 09:08 PM

Most unique is Arthur Bryants regular sauce.
Gates standard sauce is what KC BBQ is all about.
Boutique BBQ sauces I like are 3 pigs, Firebug and Mr. Doggity's BBQ Sauce.

Okla Joes is OK, not my favorite. LC's sauce is OK too. Again, not my favorite.

Non KC sauces I like the best are Stubbs from Texas, Roadhouse from Illinois and Rendevous from Memphis.

Dave Lane 05-07-2012 09:09 PM

Haywards is one of my favs, Gates is good, LCs

gblowfish 05-07-2012 09:10 PM

I bought Roadhouse at the American Royal BBQ a few years ago. LOVE this stuff, and it's getting hard to find:

That's the kind I just ordered, 2 regular and 1 spicy. Looks like I'm going to try OJs Night of the Living

Reaper16 05-07-2012 09:14 PM

I really love the sauce from Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs, too.

arrowheadnation 05-07-2012 09:16 PM

Will add that I bought that Gates Sauce at Dillon's in Wichita. Was pretty surprised they carry it.

What's your favorite sauce there good buddy?

Fishpicker 05-07-2012 09:33 PM

NOTL BBQ sauce is great. If I buy sauce from the store, it's usually Curley's Famous Hickory BBQ.

He's doing great, thanks for asking. I just saw him earlier tonight. I don't talk about him as much on the CP because people think I'm spamming the board for him.

His sauce is doing very well, and his catering business is starting to take off now that the weather is getting nice. He's got a very cool BBQ rig, and he's re-habbing an old 1952 Dodge Panel Van to pull the rig. That should be on the road by mid-summer. He also still has his radio show on Sunday Mornings on KCMO. That's going well too. He hobnobs with all the big chefs and foodies in KC, and he's starting to get a reputation as a go-to guy for BBQ.

You can see his site here:
http://www.mrdoggity.com

I also really like the Firebug sauce, which is a local sauce too. Highly recommend it if you see it in the store. I tried some and really like it a lot:

Right now their (Wabash) spicy sauce is my favorite. But I love Gates and Bryants too. I go through phases. Right now I think I'm kind of burnt out on Gates. I'm behind the times and still haven't had OK Joe's. Jack Stack is the only one listed that I've had and personally wouldn't rank very high.

gblowfish 05-07-2012 09:44 PM

A lot of people who try Bryant's for the first time don't like it at all, because it's so different from anything they've ever had before. It's not a sweet, grocery store sauce like Kraft, or Maull's, or Bulls Eye, or KC Masterpiece, or whatever other crap is being sold for $.99 a bottle.

Bryants on brisket is a one of a kind taste experience. I wouldn't feed it to kids, but for adults, its wunnerful.

Phobia 05-07-2012 10:10 PM

I need to grab some of doggity's sauce some day. Some of my favorites have already been mentioned especially Firebug but nobody has said "Blues Hog" yet. That stuff is pretty spectacular on pulled pork.

gblowfish 05-07-2012 10:17 PM

If you go to a music show at Knucklehead's, they serve Doggity BBQ sauce as their sandwich sauce. The couple who owns Knucks are good friends with Mr. Doggity's mom, they all grew up together in the old KC east side neighborhood. Knucklehead's is an outstanding live music venue, always a good time.

We don't often venture out of Lee's Summit especially with a waddling 6 months preggo wife. But yeah, will be keeping an eye out for a bottle.

There's a place in downtown Lee's Summit called "A Place in Thyme" that carries Mr. Doggity's sauce. You should be able to buy it there.

Oh, absolutely. Or chopped brisket. Yeah. It's silly. I don't sauce my ribs often but I'll bet it will carmelize up nicely on ribs too. First listed ingredient is brown sugar.

They have about 5-6 flavors, do you remember which one it was?

Just the straight up BBQ sauce - their flagship product. Never had any of their other stuff.

BryanBusby 05-07-2012 10:51 PM

I use this stuff when I make pulled pork sandwiches. The name change was dumb and gay, but the sauce is good.

Gates will always be the perfect sauce to me.

BoltWalt 05-07-2012 11:20 PM

You guys are killing me with this thread, I had two peanut butter and butter sandwiches for dinner, and now I come on here and read this. Damn. I love good BBQ, now that is second on my list after Taco makings for when I go shopping, and I am stranded at home until the repair truck picks up my wheel chair and takes it to the shop to repair and delivers it back to meagain, which means I'll gorge myself when I am finally get these done. The last BBQ I had was ground beef cooked crumbly with BBQ sauce out of the bottle, pretty much the quality depends upon the sauce.

Raiderhater 05-07-2012 11:37 PM

You won't find it in any stores. It's a local sauce out of Tonganoxie, KS called Fat Sam's. The absolute perfect mixture of sweet and spicy.

So, what was the time before that? Was it something different than hamburger doused in BBQ sauce? I mean, did it have some smoke flavor provided by real smoke?

ROFL I was thinking the same thing. If San Diego BBQ is ground beef with BBQ sauce, I'll stick with Mexican if I'm ever in the area.

Smokehouse/Jack Stack, pretty much the same, pure awesomeness.

Gates is very easy to mimic at home. Nothing like that available in AL, so I make my own. My recipe base started with the Gates version, but now you would hardly recognize it. Tasty stuff.

bevischief 05-08-2012 06:11 AM

Firebug

LOCOChief 05-08-2012 08:30 AM

sweet baby rays for ribs and pork

gates for beef

There's a new bbq place down here in S. florida everyone has been talking about so the wife and i checked it out. the house sauce said KC Cattlemans, it's Gates no doubt about it.

Maybe you should start a business. I'm sure your BBQ sauce is far from Gates.

ChiefsCountry 05-08-2012 08:55 AM

Gates is my personal favorite with Arthur Bryant's a second.

Non-KC - Sweet Baby Rays

Best non KC BBQ places - Jack's in Nashville and Rendezvous Ribs in Memphis. If you could put some Gates sauce on those, it would be amazing.

I'm partial to 3 Buddeez One of a Rind bbq sauce. Of course I make it, so this is sort of a shameless plug. It's not available at too many places other than McGonigles and a few Hyvees right now tho. Make with sweet pickled watermelon rinds as the thickener. Great on chicken and ribs.

Fish 05-08-2012 09:55 AM

Here's what I typically have in the fridge:

Firebug - #1 without a doubt.
LC's original
Gates X hot
Blues Hog

This goes onto all of my meats when grilling. I don't use it as a side sauce after the meat is cooked, but I cook it "into" the meat. Great sauce.

Lawrence stores stopped carrying it, but I found a HyVee in Lenexa that still carries it. I'm trying to talk my friend who just opened a BBQ supply store in Lawrence to carry it. I'm sure he will.

Firebug and Blues Hog. Both sauces I use regularly. And both because of a thread a few years ago where both you and George recommended to try those two sauces. Excellent advice.

Fire Me Boy! 05-08-2012 10:14 AM

Gates replica sauce. It's a very close approximation to Gates original.

Quote:

1 c. sugar
1/4 c. salt
2 Tbsp. celery seed
2 Tbsp. ground cumin
2 Tbsp. ground cayenne pepper
2 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 Tbsp. chili powder
2 qt. ketchup
2 c. apple cider vinegar
1-1/2 tsp. liquid smoke (I leave this out)
1 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice

Directions

In a small bowl, combine sugar, salt, celery seed, cumin, red pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder. Set aside. In a large bowl, combine ketchup, vinegar, liquid smoke, and lemon juice. Add dry ingredients and mix until very well blended. Serve warm or at room temperature. Sauce may be stored in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or in freezer for up to 6 months. Yield: about 3 quarts
This recipe gets better if you toast your spices and use homemade chili powder.

It's made by a fella in Lee's Summit. Small distribution. Mainly found locally around KC, and at a few choice BBQ stores and local supermarkets.
