Chiefs center Rob Bruggeman assaulted in Des Moines

Downtown Des Moines is not normally thought of as a place fraught with danger.

Reputations can be deceiving, though. Chiefs center Rob Bruggeman was punched in the face early Sunday morning in Des Moines by a man named Erwin Arturo Castro-Cortez. According to the Des Moines Register, police officers witnessed Castro-Cortez shove Bruggeman and then punch him in the face in what they say was an unprovoked assault. Castro-Cortez has been charged with assault causing bodily injury, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Bruggeman played at Iowa in college and broke into the NFL with the Buccaneers in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. He spent two seasons on the Falcons practice squad, but got cut by Atlanta at the end of last year’s training camp. He signed to Kansas City’s practice squad near the end of last season and is trying to win a spot on the 53-man roster this time around.

Bruggeman had a cut on his upper lip, but refused medical attention at the scene. Given the nature of life as an offensive lineman in the NFL, Bruggeman’s ability to take a punch might help him earn a role with the Chiefs this season.

Mama Hip Rockets 06-11-2012 08:47 AM

I have literally never heard of that guy.

Simply Red 06-11-2012 08:47 AM

How on earth did this big Center let the hood-rats do this to him and live to tell about it?

Yes, I agree, get Ray Farmer on the phone.

At first we thought it was a lightening strike and thunder, but I was overjoyed when I realized it was the sound of Manning's neck cracking and your playoff hopes and dreams crashing to earth.

Who?

Rain Man 06-11-2012 10:15 AM

What kind of idiot attacks an NFL lineman?

Hoover 06-11-2012 10:22 AM

My office isn't far from there.

Court Ave is pretty safe until the wee hours of the morning.

Deberg_1990 06-11-2012 10:25 AM

Slow news day?

Des Moines is one of the nicer cities I've been to. Local, non-chain bars and restaurants and very liveable from what I could tell. Cool buildings with some history to them.

Sadly, by taking it and not retaliating he did the right thing. If he goes Hulk Smash on these shitbags, his career is likely over.

Cornstock 06-11-2012 10:59 AM

Looks like there's even Raider fans in Des Moines unfortunately. I thought that city held itself to higher standards...

He would've been well within his right to defend himself.

Okie_Apparition 06-11-2012 11:32 AM

Thank goodness he wan't in Kansas
They'd be pulling glass shards out of his asshole

Yeah, this punk looks a little small, to be pimp slapping an NLF lineman. He's lucky he didn't get curb stomped.

The damage a NFL lineman could do with a single punch could easily go beyond what a jury would consider self defense. A solid punch by a guy like this would probably be the equivalent of a normal person hitting somebody with a bat.

Obviously I don't agree that a man should have to stand there and let some idiot punch him without retaliating, but in this horseshit sue-the-world society we've devolved into, he made the right call.

You guys are idiots. What was he supposed to do, fight back? You realize the headline would have read much differently, even if he was within' his rights. "KC Chiefs center involved in street fight at 2:00am Sunday morning, placing two individuals in hospital". Not something any athlete needs publicized. Made the right career decision, smart guy.

Beat the hell out of the guy and it's all over the news and the guy sues him....
Maybe he is just a smart football player which is odd in the NFL
