DNSChanger Virus Safety Net Going Down 07/09/12
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/dnschanger.asp
Apparently a virus (DNSChanger) was foiled last year, and the FBI erected a "safety net" of servers to help with the fix. They were designed to redirect anyone infected away from scam sites. The servers go down July 9th of this year. |
Here's a link to a check site: http://www.dns-ok.us/
And you can go to the FBI site as well: https://forms.fbi.gov/check-to-see-i...sing-rogue-DNS |
For more info on the virus itself...

You might be infected with DNS malware! Click here to test(Which requires working DNS to navigate to the test website)... LMAO....

Uh...yeah...the FBI has set up a system of servers that currently provide a workaround. A "safety net" so to speak. That safety net goes down 07/09/12. So you could be infected right now and not know, then suddenly be unable to connect to the internet on Monday. RIF, check the OP. |

I think the real danger of this imminent tragedy is that we'll all be doomed to bounce back and forth between these two threads forever.

I'm totally shocked that anyone is here to post. We barely avoided another computer apocalypse...

I can't get on the internets. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
|
This will surely calm the fears of those who thought this was nothing more than a government designed hoax designed to get your computer information.

i survived the DSNChanger virus 2012.

I'm usually anti-conspiracy theory. But I did find it slightly odd that the FBI would step in to a matter like this, and even go so far as to take down the malware DNS servers and replace them with their own. For one, why replace it with their own? Are we to believe they did this out of the goodness of their heart to help people? Why this malware and not others? Second, why not just shut the DNS servers off in the first place? People would lost internet, but that should be acceptable loss seeing as how they were using a fake server in the first place. If they got that malware, they're likely to have more and need to scan their computer anyway. Losing internet routing would encourage that, instead of rerouting the user automatically without the user knowing they were exploited. And last, if the FBI was in control of infected people's DNS routing, why not just route everyone to a page explaining how to fix their faulty DNS? That would be completely simple. For every infected machine, just route every address they type in to a page on an FBI server explaining how to fix it. No scan tool necessary.

I can't tell if I have been affected by this?
|
From what little I read about it, apparently this virus stopped circulating in 2007. So only computers from 2007 would be affected, and that's only if you haven't run a modern virus program on it. Not for nothing but, if you're running a five-year-old POS without modern virus scanning, you deserve to lose your Internet.

What's the benefit to the FBI in this situation? There's been thousands of malware instances in the past decade. Why would the FBI step in on a DNS issue like this? Why aren't they helping malware prevention in other areas that are just as dangerous to the public? Again, I'm not trying to make accusations. I don't think the government is working against its citizens. But this whole thing was stupid the way it went down.... |
