Greinke ejected after spiking ball

<p><iframe src="http://mlb.mlb.com/shared/video/embed/embed.html?content_id=22916717&amp;width=580&amp;height=326&amp;property=mlb" width="580" height="326" frameborder="0">Your browser does not support iframes.</iframe></p>
<p><strong>Zack Greinke</strong>&nbsp;was ejected in the first inning of Saturday&rsquo;s Brewers-Astros game after spiking a ball following a close call at first base.</p>
<p>With a runner on third, Astros second baseman&nbsp;<strong>Jose Altuve</strong>&nbsp;hit a ground ball in between first and second to score the run. First baseman Corey Hart made a diving stop to field it and tossed to Greinke who raced to first. Greinke touched the bag at the same time as Altuve, so first base umpire&nbsp;<strong>Sam Holbrook</strong>&nbsp;called Altuve safe.</p>
<p>Greinke turned around and spiked the ball, likely because he was frustrated with the call and/or giving up the run (Carlos Gomez misplayed a ball in center to give Jordan Schaefer a triple to lead off the game). Holbrook immediately ejected Greinke, who had only faced two batters and thrown four pitches.</p>
<p>Milwaukee manager&nbsp;<strong>Ron Roenicke</strong>&nbsp;came out to discuss the call with Holbrook and was ejected for arguing.</p>
<p>The questionable ejection put the Brewers in a horrible spot because it meant the bullpen would have to pitch almost the entire game. It also came at a bad time for Milwaukee as Greinke is&nbsp;<a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Chris-Carpenter-St-Louis-Cardinals-John-Mozeliak-Peter-Bourjos-Colby-Rasmus-070312" target="_blank">being mentioned in trade talks</a>, and the quick ejection prevented interested teams from being able to see him pitch.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s also worth mentioning that Holbrook is part of umpire Joe West&rsquo;s crew, which is&nbsp;<a href="http://larrybrownsports.com/baseball/umpire-joe-west-stubbornly-takes-a-run-away-from-padres-on-play-he-didnt-see/68884" target="_blank">notorious for questionable calls</a>.</p>
<p>Here's a video of Greinke talking about the ejection after the game. He says he was mad at himself for making a mental mistake on the play:</p>
<p><iframe width="580" height="324" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" src="http://hub.video.msn.com/embed/af634c22-becb-4b38-bdce-878712e1731e/?vars=ZnI9c2hhcmVlbWJlZC1zeW5kaWNhdGlvbiZjb25maWdOYW1lPXN5bmRpY2F0aW9ucGxheWVyJmxpbmtiYWNrPWh0dHAlM0 ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuZm94c3BvcnRzLmNvbSUyRiZta3Q9ZW4tdXMmc3luZGljYXRpb249dGFnJmNvbmZpZ0NzaWQ9TVNOVmlkZW8mYn JhbmQ9Zm94c3BvcnRzJmxpbmtvdmVycmlkZTI9aHR0cCUzQSUyRiUyRm1zbi5mb3hzcG9ydHMuY29tJTJGdmlkZW8lM0Z2aWRlb2 lkJTNEJTdCMCU3RA%3D%3D"> </iframe></p>

What do the rules say for umps? Is there a no tolerance rule for spiking balls? Or is it just a judgment call thing?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the ump has the authority to make judgement calls for situations like this. He could have opted to give the runner an extra base to 2nd if he wanted too. Kind of like a 15yard penalty for unsportsmanship like conduct. I could be wrong?

Demonpenz 07-08-2012 08:32 AM

It's a live ball, Throwing balls, bats, helmets, spiking any of those, or drawing a line in the dirt with your bat is ususally an ejection

KCUnited 07-08-2012 08:37 AM

It's a fine line. There have been a couple Jonathan Sanchez 3-0 pitches that could've warranted ejection if the umps are taking a hard line on this.

Demonpenz 07-08-2012 08:44 AM

People don't go to the games to see the dumbass umpire

wazu 07-08-2012 08:58 AM

Bad ejection. Gotta wonder if the umpire pulled the trigger too early and quickly realized it, but had to stay with it once he'd done it.

gblowfish 07-08-2012 10:07 AM

Ump did the right thing. Bad sportsmanship by Zack Nebraska. If he wants to get pissed off, get out of the inning, then go in the dugout and wreck a water cooler.

If that is bad sportsmanship then you need to eject every player that throws his glove down and throws the bat down in the same manner.. He did not throw it at the player or ump..

they throw out players who spike helmets bats gloves, ususally get a pass if you toss the equipment.

I agree with Valient here.

That was a quick and unnecessary hook.

Really? I rarely see it.. Quite a few royals were spiking their helmets during our losing streak.. Now if they spike it at a player or ump I agree with an ejection.. But to do it in frustration at yourself should not be an ejection..

I agree, but it's hard to tell. There was a catcher I think from the Royals last year that slammed his chest protecter down and got the ejection

Demonpenz 07-08-2012 10:33 AM

Nevermind that was Molina. Off the top of my head I have seen Vince Coleman and Kenny Loften thrown out for doing no talking just throwing equipment.

Sure-Oz 07-08-2012 10:37 AM

That crew all needs a dump taken on their chest....pathetic

Thig Lyfe 07-08-2012 10:39 AM

At least he didn't bump an old thread. He would have gotten an Artest-esque suspension for that shit.

And the worst thing a sport, any sport, can do to alienate and piss off it's fan base is give their umps/refs the ability to make judgement and situational calls IMO. The abillity to play favorites and influence games becomes far too great.

Awful call, give the kid a warning and an embarrassing talking to on camera FIRST. This isn't a 1950's etiquette class, it's ****ing sports. People pay to watch the talented athletes, not the talentless refs. Especially not talentless refs that can't even do their jobs right...

chefsos 07-08-2012 12:33 PM

What the hell...start him again today. And they did. And he gave up 3 runs in the first without spiking anything so far.

Bowser 07-08-2012 01:13 PM

Yeah, that was a bit excessive.

lewdog 07-08-2012 01:19 PM

I guess they could rule ejection because Greinke's action of spiking the ball was showing up the umpire?

The rules are that if you're on Joe West's crew, you're a thin-skinned asshole and you probably have a tiny dick.

**** that guy and his entire crew. It absolutely starts with West and the fact that he instills a shitty attitude in everyone on the field with him.

MLB needs to shit-can the whole bunch, they're a disgrace to the game.

The hell they do.

If you spike a helmet at the umpire, yes - they'll throw you.

Guys fire helmets into the field all the time, or rip bats down after they fly out.

Gblowfish is just an ass-hurt Royals fan who's getting off on Greinke getting tossed. If Holbrook pulled that bush-league stunt on a current Royal, he'd lose his damn mind.

DeezNutz 07-08-2012 02:11 PM

Overreaction on the part of the umpire who didn't fully see what transpired. That said, Greinke hung his ass out there unnecessarily.

threebag 07-08-2012 02:12 PM

Now he has a chance to start three regular season games in a row. Yesterday, today, and the after the All Star game.

Rep to the whole post, but this part especially - this fact is so easy to overlook when you're up in arms about a shitty call or non call that it goes unmentioned, when it deserves to be.

He's going to start again after the All-Star break too... making him the first pitcher to start 3 straight games since 1917, I believe.

But how many times do they not eject them for it?

Joe West has the ego the size of his stomach when his belt isn't buckled.

Speaking of great ump/manager arguements though, my all-time favorite...
