Heading to the Rockies to fly fish...

I'm heading out Sunday and the reports indicate the fishing is great.

I've spent all day getting my gear in order and looking at line/tippets/leaders to see if all is good. It is.

The match the hatch report gives me an idea, but I never use those recommendations exactly. A very slight twist is always better.

We'll mostly be fishing streams that have substantial pools, but good running water.

My Godson will be learning the subtleties of this great sport. He's 11.

Have fun, good luck. :thumb:

I have hoppers. We've had incredible success using terrestrials and there's a specific scud that's a killer, too. Actually, we fish in an area below an Alluvial fan near Rocky Mountain National Park. The locals say it sucks, but we slay 'em. Local knowledge is good and bad at the same time.

A Pink Scud?
Do you tie on a dropper bellow the terrestrials?

God it sounds like fun.
I have to wait till September. We will be heading to the Miracle Mile.

Terrestrials have to be top-water where we fish. Fast running water to a calm pool. Flip to the running water (over and over) and let it run to calm water.

Scuds work really well, too. A weighted scud that gets no more that a couple of feet below the water works well. Where we fish a blue/green color combination scud works.

I've been using a fly and a bobber. Works great.

I was talking about a Hopper/Dropper set up.
Dry or Terrestrial on top, with dropper (nymph, scud, etc) down low.
Killer set up.

We haven't heard much about your fishing escapades since you first asked for advice. Glad to hear you're having success.

Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. They like little chunks of bagels, too, which is interesting. I've also enjoyed acting as the lake warden, too.

I understand what you're doing. Where we fish we don't have that convenience. Very small areas in winding streams, but tons of fish. Think of it as flipping at 3 O'clock and fish hitting at noon or 11:00.

Or go really crazy with the Rocky Mountain hopper/copper/dropper by putting a copper John on there in between.

I have a Dobermann, not a beagle. I'm pretty sure he'd kick my ass if I tried to use him as fish bait. But, now that you mention it.... "Here kitty, kitty. You like fish, right?"

Do you take your dog fishing with you?
I like to take my Catahoula, she gets all excited when I bring a fish in, gives her a chance to explore the surrounding area too.

Yes, but he mostly chases the ground squirrels. He doesn't seem to know or care about the trout. He did say "Hi" to some renter down the way who rather foolishly decided to come onto our property unannounced and uninvited last weekend.

And by “hi” do you mean he jumped on top of them and slobbered all over them? My Catahoula is good for that too.

No, he did what he's been trained to do, which is to get in between the "threat" and us, growl and bare his teeth.

Trained? Didn’t know.
Mine used to be aggressive just because she’s a bitch, still can be to other dogs, but she’s calmed down considerably since I’ve had her.

Yeah, the wife has been training him since day one. She's a little obsessed with it. He used to nip her on the ass when he was a big little puppy, so I guess she has her reasons.

I grew up fly fishing out on Grand Mesa, on the other side of the front range there. Had some friends in Cedar Edge, there on the mesa. Many, many trout lakes/steams on the worlds largest flat-top mountain. Hoppers worked well in August - caddis immitations are good most of the time. 'Wooly worms' behind a small Colorado spinner work well, too.

I wish I'd bothered to photograph more fish when I was 20-ish. I used to catch a lot of 'wall mount' trout out there, and ate 'em on the spot. Well, I had my fun. Good luck, and if you ever get to Grand Mesa or down in the nearby Gunnison...don't tell anyone about it but CHIEFS fans.

Good for her, dobies are spastic and need an outlet for all that energy. Good to hear the Mrs. found an outlet for him.

I wish I had more uses for my fly fishing gear but there just isn’t that much call for one in Kansas. I use mine for some white bass, crappie and perch, not because it’s the best tool for the job but just because I want to get some use out of it.

And he gets walked twice a day, rain, shine or snow. About three miles total. He was a bit of a tard when he was much younger, but he's maturing nicely. The shame is that at least weekly, some idiot will see him being walked and either say, "Bad dog!" or they'll cross the street. Even some of my neighbors when we first got him. Now they know that he's just a big dork. But we also never forget that he's a powerful dog capable of doing damage. We aren't the type to say, "Oh, he'll NEVER do THAT!" He's still just a dog with his own mind that we can't read.

BigOlChiefsfan 07-12-2012 05:34 PM

Yeah, here in KS I use fly rods w/popping bugs at sundown to catch bass and bluegill, just out past the weedbeds. I don't mind throwing the bass back, I just like to watch 'em 'tailwalk' for a minute. But I like to clean the 'gills and pan fry - or make clam chowder with a few canned clams and a lot of boned/cubed fish. Pretty good eats.

Marcellus 07-12-2012 05:44 PM

In May I went to the Smokies for my first fly fishing trip, it was absolutely awesome.
