What is this thing? (Photo enclosed.)

I do a lot of walking, and it seems like every week or two I'll see one of these wires lying on the sidewalk. Today I saw two of them several blocks apart. They're perhaps six to eight inches long.

What are these things? Where do they come from? They've always got that little minor corkscrew pattern, so there's got to be some reason why I keep seeing them.

Right now, aliens is the best theory I've got, too.

fireworks debris

blaise 07-13-2012 06:23 PM

Some electricians or phone guys maybe dropped it from their work junk after a job?

Possibly, but I see them in different locations. Yesterday, the two I saw were on a walk that was about four miles from my office, and I've also seen them near my office.

TrebMaxx 07-13-2012 06:27 PM

Obviously it is pubic hair from some dude that uses Rogaine, he is into porno and it has escaped a his drawers.

Possibility, but there's no dog tracks nearby.

And thanks. I worked hard on that bunny.

This is the other one I saw yesterday, perhaps 1/4 or 1/2 mile south of the first one.

Disregard the 90 degree angle. I presume some kid bent it or something. Every other one I've seen has been straight.

Umm, I'll file that as a theory.

it's a hairpin, Hoover.

Hydrae 07-13-2012 06:35 PM

It is from some kind of delivery that uses wire tag holders like this:

http://www.hawkstag.com/upload/images/wire.jpg

I am thinking maybe on newspaper bundles that would be dropped off around the city in the early morning hours.

[Pointing emphatically.] I was thinking it could be something like that! The wires are very small and thin, which makes me think that they're for some temporary purpose.

Looks like a wire from a power broom bristle.

I can't tell for sure on my phone, but I agree. It looks like an aerial clamp that twists around old steel drops. We wrecked out a ton of them on our last FTTH project. I need to look on a bigger screen to be sure.

Otter 07-13-2012 06:43 PM

Not sure what this has to do with anything but just want to post it while I have it handy...

I was being serious, btw, I ride road bikes and you see these in the gutter (or dig them out of your tires) a lot. Normal car ones are smaller but maybe these are from a big truck tire

If you lived in Texarkana I would know what they are without a doubt!

scorpio 07-13-2012 07:18 PM

They're straightened out hair pins for cleaning crack pipes.

I don't think it's bulky enough. I'd say it's the aftermath of something.

Simply Red 07-13-2012 07:25 PM

it's a filament for something, i say. IDK crack pipe steel wool?

Broken bristles from a street cleaner brush. If you live in the stick then you got me.

Eyebrows?

tk13 07-13-2012 08:58 PM

That's called a string snake. They are so small they can crawl between the pores of your skin and lay their eggs in your bloodstream. If you're seeing them every day that probably means a mother is inside of you and those are the babies crawling out of your body. Good luck.

Probably spent too much time around microwaves too.

Simply Red 07-13-2012 09:30 PM

It's broom bristles, it means we're sweeping Denver.

KS Smitty 07-13-2012 10:12 PM

It's a piece of wire 6-8" long. They probably come from some kind of factory that produces wire pieces 6-8" long. The reason you keep seeing them is because they are on the sidewalk where you walk.

That's what activates the eggs - microwaves interacting with your tramp stamp tattoo.

I have heard that. Makes perfect sense.

Johnny Vegas 07-13-2012 11:47 PM

I'm gonna go with its the wire from a huge wire brush thats used by those you see from a street cleaner. Probably from a carts sized one cleaning the sidewalk from time to time.

Sounds like you are going to have to notice the amount of debris between your wire encounters to see if it might be a street sweeper leaving notice that they are doing there job.

Sofa King 07-14-2012 09:21 AM

Street sweeper brush.
