Drought Worsens for Farmers and Ranchers

Corn plants damaged by extreme heat and drought conditions stand in a field in Carmi, Ill.

Scattered rain fell in parts of the Midwest on Friday, but it was not enough to provide relief to farmers struggling to salvage crops scorched by worsening drought conditions and ranchers worried about feeding livestock.

More than 1,000 counties in 26 states across the country were named natural-disaster areas on Thursday in a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It was the single largest designation in the program’s history and the worst drought since 1988, government officials said.

Did the drought worsen for bus drivers, too, or just the farmers and ranchers?

boogblaster 07-14-2012 08:23 PM

That's tough man. You guys have been in an awful multi year drought.

Where do you live Notorious... out by Elkhart or something? I've seen some pics of the Cimmaron Grasslands and it is beyond depressing. It is like someone turned back the clock to the mid 1930's!

Save your money, because this is going to impact prices down the road at the grocery store, big time. We have the same thing going on around here. We have crop failures, all over the place.

mlyonsd 07-15-2012 07:51 AM

.8 inch of rain since June 1st here. We had a big rain over Memorial Day and the crops are trying to survive with it. This week's high temps with no rain in sight very well could ruin them though.

ChiefMojo 07-15-2012 10:05 AM

Crazy to think 2/3 of the country is in a drought!

I'm the type of person that doesn't care for the heat and I'd much rather it was freezing outside. This extreme heat (every stinking day over 100) with little to no rain is for the birds!

It just isn't the summers that get to me, but the fact winters are so mild now with so little snow it is maddening!

It's not that bad since Farmers are pretty responsible about working the land correctly, but when the ditch weeds are only ankle high, we have problems.

Last year it didn't rain a single drop from April to August. Not a single drop.

I blame the dam west of Lamar for some of the problems, but not 100%.

Poor Roundup Montana: flooded under 5' of water last year, houses burned to the ground this year by grass fires and high wind.

patteeu 07-15-2012 11:38 AM

My yard is still doing alright and I don't even water.

Yeah, I have to admit, that is one of the last places on earth I would want to live. The place is cursed. If guys aren't out playing banjo's on the steps with their toes, the place is flooding, or burning, no thanks!

L.A. Chieffan 07-15-2012 12:24 PM

Stop using Brawndo to water the crops.

Titty Meat 07-15-2012 12:53 PM

It's the Cornhusker offense

WV 07-15-2012 02:53 PM

Oh no! If the corn prices go up it might bankrupt the oil industry and spike the price of Gas! Oh wait..nevermind.
