24-year-old burglar meets 92-year-old vet

I bet you can guess what happens next.

Quote:

VERONA — Earl Jones had just turned off his new TV shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when he heard a bang in the basement.

The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.

Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot. The Boone County Sheriff later announced the death of the intruder, Lloyd (Adam) Maxwell, 24, of Richmond, Ky.

“These people aren’t worth any more to me than a groundhog,” Jones told the Enquirer. “They have our country in havoc. We got so many damned crooked people walking around today.”

In Earl Jones’ mind, his actions are justified, as well. He said he was completely within his rights to defend his life and ranch home on the 500-acre farm he has worked since 1955.

“I was hoping another one would come up – I aimed right for his heart,” Jones, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1941 through ’46, told the Enquirer Monday afternoon. “I didn’t go to war for nothing. I have the right to carry a gun. That’s what I told the police this morning.”

Not long after the shooting, Kenton County Police responded to a call on Courtney Road of a man who had been shot. There they found Maxwell’s body and two uninjured men in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala who later, during questioning, would admit to being at Jones’ home on Violet Road.

The break-in was the third Jones has experienced on his farm this year. In April, thieves stole 90 head of cattle from the field behind his house. In August, burglars took from his house a television, a few thousands dollars cash and a personal check they unsuccessfully tried to cash and ripped his phone out of the wall.

“I can’t leave the damn house to do my work outside,” said Jones, removing his World War II veteran cap with his right hand and running his left through his thin white hair.

Jones has lived alone since his wife, Virginia Pearl, died in 2006. The couple had no children. Jones grew up hunting squirrels in Boone County and volunteered for the forerunner to the U.S. Air Force in 1941. He went through weapons training in the military.

He is not happy that police took the rifle used in the shooting.

“How am I going to protect myself if they come back looking for revenge?” he said.

Maxwell fell back seven steps onto a landing. Jones didn’t pursue them into the basement.

He called a neighbor and calmly said, “I need help. I just shot a man,’” he said.

At the same time, the two unhurt intruders, Dalton and Inabnit, fled Jones’ property with Maxwell’s body. Not long afterward, having driven across the county line, they called Kenton County Police with a bogus story of how Maxwell had been shot.

When Boone County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Jones house, they found the basement door ajar and no one except Jones in the home.

Jones didn’t like how deputies treated him. “They stood down there with their guns on me, yelling, `Get your hands up! Get your hands up!’” he said. “I told them, `I’m not putting my damn hands up.’”

Finally, he did. Police approached up the long gravel driveway, flanked by a field of tobacco that Jones rents to another farmer, and questioned him.

“Was I scared? Was I mad? Hell no,” Jones said. “It was simple. That man was going to take my life. He was hunting me. I was protecting myself.”

I think this might be racist...Not sure - will have to wait until I see how the media portrays it...

With a .22 - very impressive shooting.

Someone in town should go buy him a new rifle since the cops helped themselves to his.

He should get a higher caliber rifle. Perhaps a shotgun.

I always figured shotguns were for guys who couldn't put a .22 round into a <strike>burglar's</strike> groundhog's heart. Besides, it might damage some door trim or something...

This story is fantastic. Good for the old vet and even better for the scum of today getting his!

Good for him. The old man saved us tax payers a shitload of money that would have been spent in court costs and a lengthy prison stay

.22's are deadly at close range.

A 92 year old doesn't want to have to redecorate his house, and why bother when you are a crack shot?

listopencil 09-04-2012 05:34 PM

Not another senseless gun related death. The horror. Oh, the horror.

Iowanian 09-04-2012 05:41 PM

My town is experiencing a rash of home burglaries, at night, while people are home. They're breaking doors or prying open windows and stealing purses, wallets etc.

Last night, a neighbor whom I've talked about in another thread(Gilbert Grape's mama) called reminding me that their home had been broken into this weekend and she'd seen someone at their window again. I told her if she'd shut up long enough, I'd go have a look.....because when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

She said something about fearing they'd break into my house...and I told her "well, that's their bad Idea because inside this door, they'll get shot in the face".

The old man in this story did it right. Good for him.

Bwana 09-04-2012 05:49 PM

Outstanding! It sounds like the old boy could use donations for a new .22. If he lived in Montana, I would run down to Cabela's, pick one up and drop it off myself, along with a few bricks of ammo.

BWillie 09-04-2012 05:51 PM

The only part if this story I don't like is his comments about wishing another one would come up so he could kill another person. You shouldn't ever want to kill, it should be last resort. Not saying his actions weren't warranted but there are so many ppl out there just wanting any reason they can to shoot somebody. I hope I never have to kill anybody

**** that noise. He has been robbed multiple times and is worried that they might come back again. Might as well meet them face to face when he knows he's got the drop on them. Next time, he might not be so fortunate.

Right, his actions were justified. I'm sure I'd have done the same thing if i was him. I sure wouldn't have wished to have the opportunity to take another life though. I just hear armed ppl all the time wish that someone would even remotely step on thier property so they can blow someones head off. That is what bothers me about SOME gun owners

You hear them say that about "people"? There is no modifier to that word in order to winnow down the type of "people" to whom they refer?

Sure he did - once. It's great that he dropped the one who sucks the penis with one shot - but that won't happen all the time.

A .22 is a very poor choice for a home defense weapon.

He's 92. A .22 is plenty powerful for someone that age. Plus I doubt anyone will be on his property now.

.22 is fine in the hands of those who know how to use it, case and point.

Frazod 09-04-2012 06:31 PM

.22s are good for mob hits, target shooting and a child's first firearm. Can they kill? Certainly. Do you want to rely on one in a life and death situation? Not me.

You are right, it took a lot of equipment and a buyer that's just as dirty.

If the old man would have killed the intruder with say a 12 gage shotgun, the "authorities" would probably have charged him with excessive force. Seriously, that's how screwed up this country is getting.

Hell I wouldn't be surprised if he was tried for pre-meditated murder for sitting there for 15 minutes waiting for them to come up stairs instead of trying to leave or hide and wait for the police. :banghead:

I've just never seen it, or even heard about it. I knew a few people who'd hunt with scoped revolvers or 12 gauge slugs, but mostly it was 30-06s or 308s.

I've killed 3 deer with a .22 LR. It has plenty of whallop to take down a deer. Shot in the head from 40' or less. You wouldn't intentionally hunt with a .22, but it's more than enough to take a deer down when shot in the right spot.

pretty much. It's also why "survival" guns are .22LR. Henry makes one that is compact, pretty cool: http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-survival-ar7.cfm.

You can kill decent size game with a .22LR, you just gotta be able to aim and shoot.

That looks like one hell of a little gun. I may have to run one of those bad boys down, just to have one. My primary will still be my Smith & Wesson .500. I don't think I would want to shoot a grizzly with a .22.

yah, for less that 3 bills it's a pretty cool little guy to have around.

I agree and a guy can NEVER have too many guns. :D

I sure as shit wouldn't want to go up against a grizzly with a .22. I'd be shitting down my leg more than worrying about shooting in the right spot. You'd have to be a literal Jedi to take down a bear with a .22.

About the only way to do it would be to hit it in the eye, best of luck with that shot. If I ever pulled that one off, my next stop would be to run down and buy a Powerball ticket.

Well, the last time I went shooting I outshot an Air Force security forces range instructor. I impressed him. Impressing your stupid ass isn't something I care about. It's neat that you think you're Annie Oakley with a .22, but if you truly believe that's an adequate home defense weapon, you're out of your mind. Do cops carry .22s? No. Do our troops carry 22s? No. Do most criminals who'll break into your ****ing house with a weapon carry 22s? I'm thinking probably not. THERE'S A REASON FOR ALL THIS.

Yet it can kill if in the right hands. That's my point.

So can a pencil. Perhaps you could add one of those to your fearsome home defense arsenal.

I would feel safe with a Colt .22 revolver.

I don't think my original post was touting the .22 as the premeire weapon of choice, just that it can and will kill you at close range.

And again, of course it can. Is it better than nothing? Of course it is. But it's not a good choice if you can get something better.

That was the point I was trying to make when some moron opined that I must be a crappy shot because I don't use a .22 as a primary defensive weapon.
