How did you end up a CHIEFS fan?
Just curious.
The first NFL game I ever watched was Superbowl XXIV, when the 49ers dismantled, humiliated, embarassed, annihilated, decimated the donkeys 55-10. It was a SB party at my uncles house. I instantly became a Joe Montana fan. I thought he was awesome (to this day I still think he's the GOAT) so I followed him. After that Superbowl I had my parents buy me books and shirts of him. Since he retired with KC, I stuck with them ever since and never looked back. And never will. EVER. They can keep breaking my heart every year but that's where this team stays, in my heart. Corny I know but its the truth. |
My Dad and older brother. :(
Why couldn't they be Steelers fans. |
My mom, who grew up in Kentucky and met my dad while she worked as a nanny in San Antonio, convinced Disco Dad to buy season tickets. I probably went to my first game around 2 or 3 years old.
Parents split but dad and I have been going regularly since 96ish. Haven't missed a regular or postseason game since I skipped the Jags game in 07 to go to a mandatory frat retreat. |
Every super bowl my dad would leave to his friends house and leave my brother and I at home. Super bowl was only for the big boys. When we got old enough to go one of buddies came up to me and asked what my favorite team was, I then noticed his Chief hat. I, of course, wanting to fit in said the Chiefs. Ever since then I followed them more and more.
|
My family moved to the KC area when I was eight, and I lived there until I left for college. We lived in Pittsburgh before that, so I could be excused for being a Steelers fan, but I foolishly opted for the new hometown team.

I grew up in Montana where there are no pro teams. Dad was born and raised in Overland Park, went to K-state and his parents were season tickets holders for the Chiefs. He grew up a Chiefs and Royals fan and I still to this day idolize my father. So naturally I chose the Chiefs/Royals and we talk about them 2-3 times a week. Although these franchises are frustrating as hell, nothing better then sharing that bond with my pops. It means as much to me as it does to him.

Family, friends, community and winning. Tomahawk chop. Chiefs and Chopper. Nigerian Nightmare. Nick Lowery and Steve Deberg. Bill Mass, Deron Cherry. Neil Smith's Brett tribute. Monday Nights full of BBQ and Martyball.
The Chiefs were and always will be pure Kansas City. |

I didn't know the sport of football existed until I moved to Kansas. They were the local team so I followed them.

I became a Chiefs fan here. In my early 20s.

Moved from Topeka to KC area in 81.
They were on TV. I watched. Instantly became a fan of Art Still. History. |
I grew up in Maryland, but was the only one in my family who was born in Kansas City. As the youngest kid, I wanted to be unlike my brother and sisters, and I latched on to the Chiefs. Plus, they were one of the few teams to have a weapon on their helmet, which I thought was cool. Thus the mind of a child.
Then as a teenager, I learned about the history of the NFL and Lamar Hunt, and I realized that I was fortunate enough to already like a team that contributed to the game that I love to watch and follow, rather than to siphon off of it or line their own pockets. Admiring the actual owner of the team, rather than following one of the many millionaire merceneries who took a job with them, just cemented it. |

As explained here:
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showp...&postcount=107 Holy crap! Raiders/Chiefs from Week 13, 1971. We kids wrested control of the TV from Dad for a short time, and saw the end of this game when the Chiefs drove late to beat those scumbags. This is the day I became a Chiefs fan. I'm about to watch it. Curious to see if it looks the way I remember it. It's a doubleheader, though, so go to 12:50 unless you want to see Vikes/Lions. Holy crap! |

Grandparents: All four born and raised, lived and died in Eastern KS. (One Grandma still alive and going at 100 years old!)
Parents: Both Born and raised in KS. Went to college in Missouri...for some reason decided to strike west in their 20's and ended up in California. Aunts/Uncles/Cousins: Mainly in KS and Missouri..... Me: Born in California, forever alone with no family...as all my relatives are in KS and MO. Started watching football way back when...way before Joe was a Chief....I started watching in the 80's when Theisman and the hogs and smurfs were the shit, and Joe was a niner...and da Bears were bad ass.....but my dad is a chiefs fan, and we always watched NFL, even b4 sunday ticket he was trying to dial in the chiefs games on a huge satellite. We also got a chiefs newsletter that was like mailed out with all the chiefs news on it (pre internet). Chiefs always and 4 ever. |
Why would you assume we're all fans of the Chiefs?!?
Just because the consensus on this board believes the Chiefs suck balls doesn't mean we're all fans. There are 5 or 6 of us who aren't... |
BTW - I hated Joe Montana.
|
Montana and Marcus Allen.

It's interesting how so many of you became fans through Joe Montana, (nothing wrong with that) .
I wonder who the next generation of CPer's will credit for making them a fan of the Chiefs... |

I was born and raised in KC. The Chiefs were always on either the radio or TV so being a fan was natural.
|
Random game I saw in 1995 on national TV when I was 10. Obviously had some great players but I really liked the sea of red, the noise, and honestly, the helmets. Derrick Thomas was the clincher over the next year or so.
|
I ask myself this very question every day.

D.T. would be the only reason I could see someone becoming a Chiefs fan on purpose, (other than Granma or Granpa forcing the Chiefs down your throats)

My Dad when I was 7 in 1990 got me started on it. Dave Kreig, Steve DeBerg, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Stephon Paige, Christian Okoye, Barry Word, Dale Carter, Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith, Percy Snow, Dan Saleamua, Tim Grunhard GOD the early 90's were so ****ing awesome for Chiefs fans. If you were a fan when Christian Okoye was running the rock over people you witnessed the best years to be a Chiefs fan. Old people will say it was the Superbowl years in the 60's but the 90's topped all.

Growing up watching the Chiefs in the 90's was great (aside from the playoffs). Watching Arrowhead rocking to the max because of DT and Neil Smith destroying people was awesome. One of the best defense's I've ever seen. We were the Ravens in the 90's. Then in early 2000's I witnessed some of the best offensive teams in the league.
I hope Eric Berry or Jamaal Charles are the heroes that start the next generation like DT was for me. |
Born and raised in Kansas City -- this is my cross to bear.
|
I was basically born into it, but I really got hooked in 1989. Marty's first season. I was 15, and that was the start of a really good run.

I don't even remember.
I think my father was a huge Bono fan, oddly enough. That's when I got sucked in. |

the first game i remember being excited about was SF vs KC, montana/young
and Derrick Thomas sacking Steve Young for a safety. i think that's what really started it |
I started following football very closely around the time Priest Holmes and Trent Green came to KC. I was 13 at the time.

In a word (two letters actually).. DT

Because of my hatred for the Chicago Cubs from a very young age.
I can not stand Cubs or their praggity ass fans. My dad is a die-hard Cardinals fan and raised me to be one as well. From day one, he made me well aware of how disgusting the Cubs fanbase is...and I thought his observations were legit, considering the behavior of the Cubs fans at school. The contradictory thing about my dad (in my eyes) was that he was also a Bears fan. He isn't as hard core about the Bears as he is the Cardinals, but he is a self-proclaimed Bears fan. When I was about 6 or 7 years old and started connecting cities with their teams and started noticing that many of the Cubs fans that I talked smack to every single day were also Bears fans, I decided that I literally could not root for that team. So I looked at this football card I had that had a picture of all of the NFL helmets and decided to become a fan of the team that I thought had the coolest logo/helmet. I narrowed it down to the Bengals and Chiefs...and chose the Chiefs. I have been die-hard ever since. Funny thing is, many things have occurred that has led me to believe that I have converted my dad to a Chiefs fan....he hasn't flat out admitted it, yet.... but he always seems to know what's going on with the Chiefs (and never knows what's up with the Bears) and he is always in a chipper mood when the Chiefs win (he is pretty apathetic when the Bears win). I think years of me pounding the thought of, "you are rooting for the same team the despicable Cubs fans root for" into his head got to him pretty early on.....but he won't admit it. |
I was born in Lawrence, KS, which is extremely close to Kansas City. My dad has started being a big fan in the 90's. That's about it.
|
i happened to turn on the chiefs pats game about three years ago and saw this guy named matty ice cassel just work the league the entire season and i was like damn this dude is tight and then he got traded to the chiefs so i became a chiefs fan and never looked back

Growing up in Fighting Illini country, I always liked "Native American teams." The Redskins, the Buffalo Bills, and the Chiefs were easy to like as they were so good in the early '90s. When I was a tween it was time to pick a horse. I picked Chiefs but don't know why exactly. I still have arrowheads that I found in Missouri while visiting my Grandparents.
As a kid I liked baseball more, because I actually played it. Logic would say I'd be an Indians fan, but Big Hurt, One Dog, Black Jack, Pudge were my guys! Much like KC they were the great team that never won it all. |

And yeah, the bills, it was more the buffalo than the bill that I liked. |
I remember going to Arrowhead in like early 80's when nobody really went and the team was horrible and we would yell we want Steve Fuller, looking back it is quite comical but I have always stuck with them win or lose.

Joe Delaney is who pretty much got me hooked on them.

Another play that stands out was the first play of the game against Green Bay where he hit Sean LaChapelle for like a 65 yd gain. |

I've been rooting for the Chiefs as long as I can remember, so I can't exactly recall the circumstance surrounding "how" - but I assume it's a combination of proximity, my dad rooting for them (even though he grew up an Eagles fan), and going to the games as a child.
