Off brand TVs
Anyone have an off brand TV (Sceptre, Haier, etc)?
What's your opinion on them? I'm looking for another TV that would go in my other living room. I'm planning on mainly using it for playing my kid's shows and using it for my Insanity DVDs.....so I'm not really looking for a high end $600 TV. I'd like to keep it under $300 and larger than 32". Any recommendations? |
I'm not sure if you can consider it name brand. But, I've had my Vizio for over 4 years.
I love it. |

Especially if you have a Sam's Club card. I bought mine when I worked there over four years ago, and financed it. Not one complaint. |

Looking to upgrade this year. |
Kind of like Vizio, Westinghouse isn't a complete off-brand, but we got a pretty cheap one at Best Buy five years or so ago, and it's been great.
|
bought an Apex once. It broke after 95 days and the warranty was for 90 days. I tried to return it and Circuit City told me to go **** myself. No wonder they went out of business.
|
ya and I bought an insignia about 3 years ago, plasma and that thing broke a year ago. I know what it needs to fix it but my soldering skills suck, there is a skill to that and I don't have it, lol.

There's a little known company called Samsung. They make a damn good TV.

My parents have a 3 yr old Sylvania 32" LCD that still works great.
|
I don't think it's considered "off-brand" but last spring I needed to replace the kids' video game TV and got a Philips 40" LED TV at Costco for under $500. It was the biggest TV I could fit into the existing console. It is a very nice TV and works flawlessly.

I have 2 LG bigscreens, so no off-brands there.
However, the girls have a Dynex (Best Buy store brand) and for a dirt cheap TV, it's been rock solid. |

Yeah.....I won't be buying a Phillips. I bought one as my first "big screen" TV and it took a shit after 3 years.
|
I might just keep an eye out since Black Friday really isn't to far away.

i had a dynex it was pretty good

My over-8-year-old POS Protron 32" HDTV is still going strong. I keep hoping it will die so I can replace it (the border is so big around the screen that it's the size of a new "37) but despite regular, daily use, it just keeps on going.
The guy driving the last functional Chevy Vega probably feels the same way. :D |

I have a 40 in Westinghouse in my room. Ive had it for only a few months 4-5 maybe. So far so good. Great picture. The sound is a big meh, but i have a cheap surround sound system hooked up to it and i took care of that problem. lol
|
I don't know a whole lot about off brands but Vizio's seem pretty good. I'd be more concerned about the warrantee. If you find a decent off-brand with a multi-year warrantee, jump on it.
|
Vizio is about as low of a brand as I would go. I have plenty of friends who have had them and they seem nice and hold up well. I only go Samsung for my nice TV though but have been thinking about a Vizio for my other TV.
|
Sams Club had a 32" Vizio for $98 this week.
|
I have a 42" insignia and don't have a single complaint. After researching them for a while insignia is a Samsung tv with a different name. All Samsung parts made in a Samsung factory for half the price.

Crazy. |
I bought a refurbished Vizio 47" about a year ago. Came with a vizio sound bar. for right at $500. great pic. I had a 32" Olevia that was good for what it was. I bought it 5+ years ago and as far as I know it's still kicking. (Gave to fiancé's dad)

It did weigh nearly three times as much and a 3 year warranty from Walmart, 3 year onsite warranty (at a farm 75 miles from KC) for like $35. So no more worries and I NEVER buy a warranty but this made me laugh. |

I ended up getting a Sceptre 32" to replace my dead Protron. $150 from Tiger Direct after a mail-in rebate.
