Chiefs safety Kendrick Lewis set to make first start

Chiefs safety Kendrick Lewis set to make first start

The Kansas City Star
Romeo Crennel hasn’t yet made the declaration, but free safety Kendrick Lewis said he would start Sunday for the first time this season in the Chiefs’ game against the Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla.

“I’m back this weekend,” Lewis said. “I’m saying that. Coach hasn’t put his stamp on there but I’m feeling good and I’m feeling confident to go out there and help my team and I’m ready if he allows me to.”

Lewis injured his shoulder in the preseason and hasn’t played since. He returned to practice weeks ago but only this week has he been working with the starters.

Crennel has indicated that Lewis would play when the Chiefs believed he could handle the contact. But he acknowledged there’s no way to know that from practice alone.

“There’s no real hitting,” Crennel said. “It’s one of those things where you really don’t know until you get to the game and he gets to play.”

Lewis said he’s been looking for contact wherever he can find it.

“In practice I’ve (run) into a couple of guys, collided, (hitting) before practice to challenge myself to gain the confidence I need going forward’’ he said. “I build confidence every day.

“Right now, my shoulder is feeling better than it has since I hurt it.”

Change at quarterback

Don’t look for the Chiefs to change much of what they do offensively because of the quarterback change from Matt Cassel to Brady Quinn. They will again rely heavily on their running game, though maybe not to the extent they did in last week’s game. They Chiefs tried 51 running plays and 17 passes against the Ravens last week.

The Chiefs are third in the league in rushing attempts, an unusual statistic for a 1-4 team that hasn’t led for so much as a single second during a game.

Crennel said Cassel and Quinn have similar skill sets.

“They both can throw the ball,” Crennel said. “They’re both tall quarterbacks. They’re both experienced. The thing that Matt has is more game time. That’s the biggest difference.

“Quinn has been in the league and he’s been on different teams and he’s seen other operations and how things are done. I think he’s excited about this opportunity that he’ll get and I think he’ll make the best of it.”

Injury report

Jon Baldwin’s availability for Sunday’s game went into doubt when he was listed by the Chiefs as not practicing. Also not practicing for the Chiefs was running back Cyrus Gray, who was sick.

The only other change was the declaration that Cassel won’t play. Running back Peyton Hillis (ankle), defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey (calf) and wide receiver Devon Wylie (hamstring) did not practice.

Center Ryan Lilja (back) and running back Shaun Draughn (ankle) were listed as limited practice participants. Lewis, defensive lineman Ropati Pitoitua (elbow) and defensive back Jalil Brown (hamstring) were listed as full participants.

Good. Although what even happened to Hillis? I never saw him get hurt

Unsmooth-Moment 10-12-2012 01:15 AM

This is great news. Very underrated.

Fritz88 10-12-2012 01:17 AM

Hopefully Berry will really shine next game.

Coach, the admin of the site. I basically made posts dating back to last year on why Matt Cassel is terrible, I would usually make the same post each time but just word it differently.

I just found this gem:

Well, y'all will be disappointed if the current media & other source rumors circulating now are true. Those rumors are, that Clark Hunt has extended Scott Pioli's contract for another 3 years.

Assuming those rumors are true, the only way Scott Pioli will leave KC is if he himself for some reason decides to resign.

I'm far to weary to debate, so will just end with...I'm one of many fans I know of, who are hoping the rumors are true and support Pioli 100%. My reasons I believe are justified. To each their own perspective, but as a resident of KC, season ticket holder, I've witnessed & experienced the improvements to the franchise overall that Pioli has made since arriving in KC 2009. There is more to a GM's role than what spectating fans observe from a distance on the field of play...much more!

GO CHIEFS!!!
Thanks, Connie Jo, for showing us all why this franchise will most likely continue down the ****ing path of FAIL.

Dear god I read further down the thread. She gets worse.

Wow, Coach is usually pretty laid back. I used to MOD over there but got sick of the homerism. Especially from Dave.

Connie Jo loves Pioli, this comment almost made me throw up.

The defense pulled it together for almost half a game, after we were down by 20...... Again.... The receivers batter passes away, including to the enemy... Our RBs fumbled three times.... And the o-line continued to struggle in pass protection.

It's hard to make a case for Cassel this week. He played poorly.

But, as always, the exaggeration is overboard.

He is really struggling this year against the pass. He still does well against the run

Heh, I have been reading over there for a bit and most of the board feels the same as her. A few don't but they are getting drowned out.

Glad Kendrick is back. His presence has been missed defensively.

He really hasn't been. Berry has missed like 5 or 6 tackles.

I don't think he missed that many his entire rookie year.

Cassel threw Hillis a swing pass that went high as usual and it was a non contact injury when he extended trying to catch Cassel's off target, short swing pass.

Defense has adjusted and started to improve already ... don't know what Lewis is going to add. It's not like he can cover a tightend or is a good tackler.

Yeah, I LOL'ed at this comment.

"Matt is essentially as good as a guy who hasn't played since 2009 and who couldn't beat out Tebow and Orton. Matt's just played more."
