Falcs or niners/Texans

Easy 6 10-21-2012 02:45 PM

Falcons - most well rounded team in football and a QB who is having a career-type year.

Patriots - while they havent been world killers yet, they still have Brady & a defense that can be good enough in a VERY weak AFC.

Niners are great but Smith is going to eventually cost them, Packer secondary + lack of a run game is eventually going to hurt them. I guess if the Texans can keep this up, then they deserve real consideration as well.

Woody Paige is picking a Broncos vs Giants Super Bowl.

Quote:

The Broncos will finish with a 12-4 record.

The Broncos will win the AFC West.

The Broncos will have a first-round bye.

The Broncos will be the host of a Jan. 13 playoff game and beat the Texans.

The Broncos will defeat the Patriots in the conference championship at home Jan. 20.

The Broncos will play the Giants in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3 (4 p.m. MST).

Peyton Manning and Eli Manning will play against each other in their hometown.

The Broncos will return to New Orleans for their third Super Bowl in the Superdome — 35 years after Super Bowl XII (Dallas 27, Denver 10) and 23 years since Super Bowl XXIV (San Francisco 55, Denver 10).

The Broncos will play the Giants for the second time in the Super Bowl, 26 years after Super Bowl XXI (New York 39, Denver 20).

The Broncos will play in their seventh Super Bowl.

The Broncos will win the Super Bowl for the first time since Jan. 31, 1999, in Super Bowl XXXIII (Denver 34, Atlanta 19) and for the third time in the franchise's history. The first was Jan. 25, 1998 in San Diego (Denver 31, Green Bay 24).

John Elway will be with the Broncos for his sixth Super Bowl. Peyton Manning will play in his third Super Bowl. He will win for the second time — to equal Eli and Elway.

That mission is not impossible or unimaginable because of the second half Monday night. Just when the world was ready to write off the Broncos, they were right on.

So, the Broncos have survived running the medieval-like gantlet of Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Houston, Oakland, New England and San Diego with a 3-3 record.

They can, should and will win the next seven games — at home against the Saints, the Chargers redux and the Buccaneers, and on the road against the Bengals, the Panthers, the Chiefs and the Raiders.

Then the Broncos play at Baltimore. Because of their injuries on defense, the Ravens are vincible.

The Broncos end with the Browns and the Chiefs at home.

They likely will be favored by the bookmakers in nine of their last 10.

When the season began, the Broncos confronted the second-most difficult schedule in the NFL, based on opponents' records in 2911. The most difficult schedule belonged to the Giants (one additional victory by their foes).

Odd that those two could meet in the Super Bowl. Odd that brothers play quarterback for the teams. Odd that Giants coach Tom Coughlin once gave the Broncos and Elway their most insufferable loss in the postseason (see: Jaguars, 1996 season). Odd that even with five combined losses, the Giants and the Broncos are in first place in their divisions. Odd that John Fox once went to the Super Bowl as an assistant coach with the Giants. Not so odd that, among the top quarterbacks statistically, Peyton is second, Eli seventh. (The Broncos have played three of the other seven, and won't face another.)

The remainder of the Broncos' schedule does not look as formidable. Their opponents, including Kansas City twice, own a collective 19-37 record. Aside from the Ravens, the others are 14-36. Not one has a winning record. Only the Chargers and Bengals are at .500. Five, including the Chiefs, have just one victory each. The other, Tampa Bay, is 2-3. Five of the Broncos' future teams probably won't win on Sunday, making the overall record even uglier.

All the Broncos have to do is play on offense and defense as they did in the second half Monday.

All?

The Broncos, according to NFL game stats, rank a respectable eighth overall on offense, 11th on defense. Peyton Manning is behind only Aaron Rodgers in passing; Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker are near the top of the tandem receiving leaders, and Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil are among the duet sack leaders. Willis McGahee is 14th in rushing.

T's are two troubles. Tackling and turnovers. Touchdowns are not troubling. Only one team — Mike Shanahan's Redskins — has more than the Broncos' 21 TDs.

Slow starts is a problem. Fast finishes is not.

They will need to score early and often against a team that will have its third head coach in the past 6½ months.

New Orleans is next for the Broncos.

And New Orleans is the ultimate destination for the Broncos.

Woody Paige is an idiot. Even if the Broncos do somehow make it to 12-4....they will not have a better record than Houston. Houston would have to 5-4 to finish the year with a worse record than the Donkeys, and Houston has already beat them head to head. Simply not happening, so Paige's playoff scenarios are complete BS.

Not sure who I would pick in the NFC. Giants have played well at times, but not every week. San Fran seems to be a hot pick, but they were whipped by the Giants. Right now I would have to lean towards Atlanta, although I still have some questions about their defense.

The Texans are clearly the best team in the AFC right now. They beat a 5-1 Ravens team today by 30.

As long as Eli Manning is lining up behind center for the Giants, they are the team I would bet on.

I don't think Atlanta is as good as their record.

For me, in the NFC, it's the Giants, with the Pack following closely.

In the AFC, it's all Texans, as long as Schaub can get through a full season.

JoeyChuckles 10-21-2012 04:15 PM

Texans peaked too early. Green Bay is just starting their climb. Same for NE.

CLX 10-21-2012 04:15 PM

I've eliminated the Chiefs from my list. I know it was sticking my neck out, but I was at a point that I needed the thin the field.

ThaVirus 10-21-2012 04:17 PM

I don't think anyone would argue that the cream of the crop this season is:

Patriots
Giants
Texans
49ers
Packers
Falcons

I listed them in order from best to worst, in my opinion.

The Falcons will likely have homefield throughout thanks to their hot start but will get buried in the playoffs by either the 9ers, Giants or Packers. I'm hesitant to give the 9ers the nod after their last game against the New York; the Giants own them in head-to-head competition. So I think it would come down to the Pack and the Giants. Probably go ahead and give that one to the Giants again since they're far more complete.

On the AFC side the only two teams that are scary in the least are the Pats and Texans. Either of them would destroy the Broncos/Chargers and the Ravens/Steelers are looking old and depleted. I'll give this one to the Texans in a grind-it-out, ball controlled game in Houston.

Not exactly going out on a limb, but those would be the safest picks to put money on, in my opinion.

I don't think we know how Shaub will perform when the bright lights go on.

I know this, if he doesn't wilt under the pressure of the playoffs, and can give that team what it needs at QB, the Texans defense can take both Brady, and certainly the great choker, out of their games.

The Broncos will be a non-factor in the playoffs. Peyton doesn't have the dome to protect him anymore and will likely have to go through either Foxboro, Houston (which would be his best option, weatherwise), Baltimore, or Pittsburgh in the middle of January.

He'll choke as usual.

He lost to the Chargers and Patriots who were the two best teams in the league the years he lost to them. Peyton carried extremely flawed Indy teams to the playoffs every year for over a decade. He isn't a choker. They used to call Elway a choker, but once he had a good team around him he won back to back Super Bowls.

ROFL The old Manning defense. When they lost it was because he was on teams that were inferior talent wise. When they won it was all because of him. Question for you then. When the Colts lost the SB to NO what was the cause? Was it Manning and his Pick-6 or the Colts "inferior" talent.

Save for 1 of 13 in third down opportunities against the Giants, that 1 a meaningless conversion at the end of the first half, Alex Smith would have led the Giants to the SB.

People want to blame Williams, but if Smith converts just a 3 or 4 third down chances, those fumbled punts won't matter.

Smith wilted under presssure.

Eli stepped up and converted huge third down opportunities.

Yeah, Eli has a whole different gear for the playoffs, so I can agree with that.

I think the Pack's questionable defense will continue to haunt them.

And there is something about Atlanta that does not seem quite right. They could be exposed as the season goes, but maybe not.

Without a doubt Smith did not play a great game in that game, but without those special teams errors it would not have mattered. He was good in the previous game though. As "money" as Eli was in that game, it took a short field that was the result of a miffed punt to get the Giants in a position to score the game leading TD. Prior to that Eli struggled to move the ball and most people I have talked to including Giants fans doubted he would have been able to drive them the length of the field to a TD.

Ultimately it is irrelevant because Eli and the Giants and not Smith and the 49ers won that game. We will never know for sure if Eli could have driven the length of the field for the game winning score. I still think that Smith can lead SF to a SB. He is by no means an elite QB, but I think he is good enough especially with that team.

Smith made a couple of plays against a weak Saints D.

And anyone that questions Eli in big games when the game is on the line has not been watching football for the last 5 years.

There is no one more clutch.

Bottom line, when the game is in the balance, you need a QB that can step up and make plays against not just the weakass defenses, but one that can do it against the good, even great defenses.

Alex Smith is not that guy.

And you are not going to the SB with defense and running the ball in today's NFL.

Pack/Pats

Both teams are much better than their record.

Easy 6 10-21-2012 05:11 PM

I never really hype the Giants, because they never seem truly elite to me, they're not flashy on offense, nothing jumps out, but thats mostly because of my re-ocurring misperceptions of Eli... they just call what works.

He NEVER really looks elite, until it really MATTERS... i've said many times how he does more with less true physical talent than any QB in the NFL... but, put him onstage when it counts & he has been total nails for years.

He's the headiest QB in the NFL, hands down... it'll be NYG @ ATL for conference champ.

I can't decide on one team yet. or 2 teams.

What I'll root for:

Redskins vs don't care

Atlanta vs Houston are clearly the favorites

But I think it will come down to Houston, Denver or NE in the AFC vs Giants, Atlanta or SF

I'm gonna predict

Houston vs Atlanta if both teams win home field

I don't think Atlanta will be this good in cold, snowy weather but in their dome they are gonna be very hard to beat.

I'm really not sure yet, lol.

Its because they are unproven. Things appear to be lining up their way so far with the Ravens, Steelers and Patriots looking weaker this year. Who knows how well teams wil be playing in December/Jan though? Ive seen many teams start out hot only to fail later in the year, and vice versa.

Actually, I think it's that they remind me of the 2005 Broncos. Clearly they have a better defense, but their offense is exactly the same. It wasn't our defense that failed in the AFCCG, though.

Newsflash. Denver's an extremely flawed team and he may regress as the season grows older...he isn't 30 anymore.

Richard_Cuckold 10-22-2012 12:22 PM

I'm sticking with my preseason pick
Pats vs Packers

Rain Man 10-23-2012 11:44 AM

In descending order, my picks are:

Bears - You have to score against them to win. Not sure that'll happen.
Falcons - You have to outscore them to win. Not sure that'll happen.
Giants - They'll get better as the season goes on.
49ers - It seems like I should rank them higher, but I can't.
Packers - See above, plus running back problems.

AFC

Patriots - I think they match up well against the Texans.
Texans - Should end up with home field in a weak division. I'm not confident in them, though.
Ravens - Getting old an injury prone. A run this year will depend on offense, not defense.
Bengals - These guys could be the dark horse if they can get out of their division alive.
Steelers - Running back problems.

So I'm going Patriots over Bears. However, the nice thing about this year is that we don't have any obvious powerhouses.

GTFO of here. They have more offensive talent than that slapdick team had. That team was definition of fraud.

the only other person that picked the Bears is Rain Man and the Vikings have a good defense as well as some really good play makers on offense. If their pile of shit QB can actually play some decent ball they have a chance.

The Steelers is because of Todd Haley and I dont trust the Texans, Ravens or Broncos.

Bears aren't a bad pick and agree Pitt's a better pick than a fraud Denver team. Vikes made me chuckle a bit in that deep NFC, they are way down my list.

thats why I picked the Vikings, they are a surprising 5-2, they play tough defense and have been close in every game but their loss to the Redskins. They should have definitely beat the Colts but they handled the 49ers, and they have the Bucs, Seattle, Detroit, Chicagox2, Packersx2, St Louis and Houston.

They can hang with Detroit, St Louis, Tampa and Seattle they just have to split a game with Chicago or GB and they are right in it.

Really?

Passing:

2005 Broncos: 210 ypg, 7.4 ypa
2012 Texans: 227 ypg, 7.4 ypa

Rushing:

2005 Broncos: 158.7 ypg, 4.7 ypc
2012 Texans: 140.9 ypg, 4.0 ypc

Looks pretty evenly matched to me. The Texans pass more, but they aren't doing it any more efficiently. They are less successful at running, though.
