Former Bears coach and Hall of Fame player Mike Ditka was hospitalized Friday after suffering what he said doctors told him was a "very minor stroke."

Contacted Friday evening, Ditka said, "I feel good right now and it’s not a big deal."

Ditka was at a suburban country club playing cards Friday when he noticed his hands “weren’t working quite right,” and then he had a problem speaking.

Ditka, 73, has not had any major health problems in recent years. But in 1988 when he was coaching the Bears he suffered a heart attack. He was back at work within a week.

ESPN producer Seth Markman tweeted that Ditka will not be on the NFL shows from Bristol, Connecticut, this weekend.

A stroke like that must be the strangest thing ever. You're just sitting there minding your own business, and the next thing you know, your hands and fingers start functioning differently, your vision changes - not significantly, but noticeably, and when you try to talk about it, you find you are using the wrong words for the simplest things.

That would be very weird, indeed.

Anyhow, get well coach.

Who would win between Ditka and a hurricane stroke?

Da Ditka.

stonedstooge 11-16-2012 08:47 PM

Dude was a wildman there for a few years when he coached. It wasn't acting either

KcMizzou 11-16-2012 08:48 PM

Hard to believe he's 73.

Munson 11-16-2012 08:56 PM

No big deal. It was just a piece of polish sausage lodged in the lining of his heart.

That's what the doctors told Ditka it was. What else are they supposed to report?

okoye35chiefs 11-17-2012 07:15 AM

sorry but if my heart stops beating I would consider it serious no matter how long it lasts

or if the blood stopped flowing to my brain I would say that was also serious

What Is a Minor Stroke?

A minor stroke is a major event in life. The symptoms of a minor stroke often are no different from those of a major stroke. A minor stroke is caused when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Common symptoms of a minor stroke include headache or migraine, nausea, numbness or tingling sensation in the limbs, loss of vision in one eye, problems talking, dizziness and extreme confusion.

There is no such thing as a minor stroke... anyone who fails the Cincinnati Stroke Scale has had a significant event happen to them... I hate classifying people, but he's a geriatric pt and I really like Ditka and wish him the best, I hope there was no significant damage, because he's one of the few people I can tolerate on ESPN

that was my point. I was saying there is no difference between a "minor" stroke and a "major" stroke

chiefzilla1501 11-17-2012 09:42 AM

**** ESPN.

****ing shameless that in talking about Ditka, they title him as "ESPN analyst." He's a hall of fame player and a super bowl coach for crying out loud.

Do you really not understand the concept of varying severity of heart attacks and strokes?

Just a "minor" injury!

whoman69 11-17-2012 01:09 PM

So if Ditka was escorting da Bears team bus to the stadium with his car and the bus breaks down leaving Ditka to play every position on the field, how much would da Bears win by?

Simply Red 11-17-2012 02:52 PM

Scary - hope he will be okay. I like Ditka ok.

Ultra Peanut 11-17-2012 02:59 PM

Is that anything like "light" treason?

Uh, that's not entirely true... There are different severity levels of strokes (based on the level of bleeding and how long it has gone untreated) and heart attacks, but my point was that anyone who has a stroke has had a significant event happen to them.

People who have Myocardial Infarctions do have "minor" heart attacks in many cases...

Lots of geriatric pts have had minor MIs and didnt even realize it or call EMS, especially women because they present differently

okoye35chiefs 11-17-2012 05:00 PM

I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING...appreciate the info .. but...

I am saying If a DR walked up to ME and said "you just had a minor heart attack" I would say "that sounds pretty serious doc"

Demonpenz 11-17-2012 05:20 PM

It depends if it happens on thanksgiving or not.

PunkinDrublic 11-17-2012 08:08 PM

I hear the Dr said he's got to watch his pork intake.
