Todd Spencer/AP Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III reinjures his right knee as he falls awkwardly while throwing an incomplete pass under pressure from Seattle Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith. WASHINGTON - A person familiar with the situation says the surgery on Robert Griffin III’s knee revealed damage to the ACL. The Washington Redskins quarterback had surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The procedure also examined Griffin’s ACL, which he tore while playing for Baylor in 2009. Another torn ACL would complicate Griffin’s chances of returning by the start of next season. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Redskins had not made an announcement about the latest details surrounding the rookie quarterback’s injury. Griffin sprained the LCL last month and reinjured the knee in Sunday’s playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks. http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopo...b10s-2-web.jpg John Lok/AP A hobbled Redskins QB Robert Griffin III lies on the ground after fumbling the ball against the Seattle Seahawks during the fourth quarter of Sunday's Wild Card loss. |
Not surprising.
The good news is an ACL is no longer a career death sentence. He will be back, just fine, next season. |
I thought I read somewhere that they found a full tear of the ACL and LCL.

I heard on the radio this morning (before 7:00 AM CST) that they had already determined that he had a complete tear of the ACL and were reconstructing it in today's surgery along with fixing the partial tear in the LCL.

Love this guy's talent.
Don't love what I think is going to be an injury riddled, short career. He takes a lot of hits. |

Thankfully Geno is a pocket passet... |
Can we scrap the read option in the NFL now? It's fun to watch but gets guys hurt.
Unless your QB is freaky big like Cam Newton, just doesn't make sense to me. |
Boy, it's not often I lament over an athlete's injury, but this is an exception. He's not 12 years into his career. This ****ing sucks for him, and it's much worse than Berry's, or Charle's, or Moeaki's injury. He may never be the same again, and he was supposed to be special.

I don't know why they pushed him so hard this season, I realize its the playoffs but no excuse, he was looking like his knee hurt all game even before that bad snap...

I love Griffin III and hope he has a great career but give me a pocket QB all day over a running QB.

The entire time I watched the game last week, I was dumbfounded that the coaching staff wasn’t pulling him out of the game. It was just a matter of time before he did permanent damage. That's on top of him being pretty much ineffective after the hot start.
|
If we take Shanahan completely out of the picture, how does this affect your view of RGIII's injury? I'll bet a lot more people would be upset by this. It's bad for the whole league for this guy's career to be ruined his first year in.

Just more evidence that no draft pick is a sure thing. You never know what's going to happen. Good luck, RG3. |

Shanahan really needs to consider changing their offense to try to keep him in the pocket more. Time to scrap that read option shit. |
RG III was selfish to insist on staying in the game after that second touchdown.
The Redskins had a better chance of winning the game if had not been selfish. Shanahan could have had more courage and pulled him from a game. But RG III put him in a tough spot, by insisting on staying in the game. I am glad the Redskins lost, since Seattle v. Atlanta is a better matchup. But I hope RG III learns that being a team player means letting the better player play. Once RG III got hurt on that rollout, Kirk Cousins was the better QB. Hope RG III comes back healthy as ever, Chiefs v. Redskins next year could be a great show. |

People keep talking about how ineffective he was in the 2nd half, and that really isn't true. The playcalling and Seattle's D dictated the 2nd half. He was often in 3rd and very long situations. There were screens blown up and no rushing yards in the 2nd half. Hankerson dropped a key 3rd down conversion near midfield the drive before (IIRC) RGIII got hurt.
Griffin's problem was that he didn't play smart. The play before the bad snap, he rolled out and had tons of time. There was an open man that he didn't see and instead of throwing the ball away he took an unnecessary sack from Irvin (that I thought bent his knee back a bit). |
Complete system fail between the HC, doctor and the player.

Mike Shanahan has pulled this garbage before with Terrell Davis and Al Wilson. I hope he gets fined by the league.

Did Stevie Johnson sign with the Seahawks for this game?
|
According to reports, Shanahan started the 2012 season with his job on the line.
When Griffin injured his knee on Dec 9th, it was reported the recovery could take 4-6 weeks. Griffin was back after missing one week. |
Everyone knows running quarterbacks are a disaster waiting to happen. There's a reason that NFL running backs usually have a short career.
As for pulling RG3 from the game, everyone watching that game could tell how ineffective he was, and that not only was he putting his health at risk but the Skins probably had a better chance of winning with the backup at that point. What's really funny is that when Cutler pulled himself from a game, everyone jumped on the guy and called him a pussy. But this incident makes it clear that, if you can't play, you shouldn't play. |
What if:
Cousins isn't that good, and the Skins know this, but they think they can deal him for a first rounder in the offseason. However, they don't want to play him because they know he will be exposed. |

Chris Clemons of the Seahawks tore an ACL during the same game. For all of Goodell's blabbering about safety, field maintenance should be priority #1. |

This could end up being a blessing in disguise, it might end up forcing him to completely focus on being a pocket passer and stop risking himself like that.
All of that running around needed to come to a stop at some point, why not just get it out of the way now. You just cant slam your most precious commodity around like a running back. |

And now everyone especially Shanny is doing the CYA thing throwing the Dr. under the bus which is not cool. I don't believe RGIII was being selfish at all as jettio said. If anyone was being selfish it was Shanny who should have stepped in and pulled him not just to have a healthier QB out there to have a better chance to win BUT to protect the franchise. But he couldn't resist and let him stay in thus exposing Shanny's real feelings that in his mind a 65-75% functioning RGIII is better than a 100% Cousins even though Cousins had played well when called upon which makes Shanny look even worse and to be 2nd guessed. Understand this kid was raised in a military family with much discipline, competitive as hell and knows he is the leader who must lead and those 3 elements automatically kicked in for him. I don't blame him one iota for this. I believe Shanny did recognize that he was injured but winning was all that mattered and rather than step in and pull him to protect not only him but the franchise, Shanny took advantage of the rookie QB's naivete' about playing injured as opposed to playing hurt. He got greedy and hoped RGIII could pull it off like he had done all year. I guarantee you this will be one of those NFL Films documented moments down the road about Shannahan's career and he will end up confessing that he should have pulled him. :thumb: |

doctor on ESPN says 9 to 12 months recovery for RGIII since they had to 'harvest' tissue from one knee to make a new acl in the other knee.

This has ominous signs of another 'could have been great' guys career cut short. IF he can come back from multiple ACLs and an LCL, both himself and his playcallers need to be wary of injury at all times. That means no more stupid bootlegs. And jesus christ man, when you see a linebacker with QB bloodlust lock eyes on you..

Griffin’s knee creates more concern than advertised Posted by Mike Florio on January 12, 2013, 2:17 PM EST And now we know why Dr. James Andrews is pumping the brakes regarding the presumption that Robert Griffin III will become Adrian Peterson II. Per a league source, there is much greater concern regarding Griffin’s knee than anyone connected to the Redskins or Griffin has publicly conceded. Yes, he tore his LCL and his ACL. Yes, it won’t be easy to rehab both ligaments at the same time. Yes, they had to invade his healthy knee for a patellar tendon graft. And, yes, Griffin suffered a partial tear of his meniscus when tearing the ACL, a common consequence when the ACL is damaged. All of those pieces of information have made their way to the media. But the entire result is a stew of concerns that has created a far more negative vibe in and around the Griffin camp than the pronouncements of optimism and quasi-guarantees that he’ll be good as new by September 2013. Apart from the fact that there’s no way to know how the ACL will rehab, the biggest concern, as the source explained it, is the damage to Griffin’s cartilage. With the ACL in the right knee now torn twice in less than four years, Griffin has lost enough cartilage in his knee to raise concerns about how much remains and how long it will last. Eventually, Griffin could be dealing with bone-on-bone contact, and the chronic pain that goes along with it. And he’s still only 22. The first ACL tear was long forgotten during Griffin’s stellar rookie season. In fact, most fans didn’t even know about it, because Griffin was hardly a nationally-known name at the time the injury happened. But there was a real physical risk when the Redskins gave up three first-round picks and a second-round pick to get Griffin, and less than a year after making the trade the team now has to wonder whether Griffin ever will be the same — and if he is how long that will possibly last. |
Quote:
The Redskins did give up WAAAYYY too much to get him though considering he is a huge injury risk. As someone said, he needs to take a year off and learn to become an effective pocket passer. |
Quote:
That's what bone on bone does. Ruins careers |
The Cartilage is a bigger problem, like mcaj22 is saying, than the other things. He probably won't be as explosive.

two tears leaving very little to no cartilage left in the knee for bone to bone, and will/could suffer chronic pain the rest of his career though not degenerative, still is exactly what Brandon Roy suffered, though RGIII took a different path to get there, (two ACL tears) If there is no cartilage left to operate on, his knee is going to take a POUNDING just being bone to bone |
