Report: Chiefs' Matt Cassel 'destined to be released soon'

Matt Cassel's four-year run in Kansas City could be coming to an end as the Chiefs quarterback is 'destined to be released soon,' according to USA Today.

The move wouldn't be shocking because Cassel is due $7.5 million in 2013 and to say he struggled last season would be an understatement.

Cassel went 1-7 in eight starts in 2012 and was benched following the team's Week 7 bye. His 66.7 quarterback rating ranked 32nd in the league. He also had the worst touchdown-interception ratio in the NFL. Cassel threw 12 interceptions and only six touchdown passes. The season got so bad that Kansas City fans booed Cassel after he suffered a head injury in the team's Week 5 loss to Baltimore.

New Chiefs coach Andy Reid has yet to give Cassel a vote of confidence, and Reid seems determined to have a starting quarterback in Kansas City next season who's not named Matt Cassel.

Reid has openly expressed interest in Philadelphia's Nick Foles and reportedly "really likes" San Francisco's Alex Smith. Reid has already announced that he'll be calling offensive plays next season, so it makes sense that he wants his own, hand-picked guy under center.

If the Chiefs do release Cassel, that will take their quarterback-neediness to an new level. The only quarterbacks left on the roster would be Ricky Stanzi and Alex Tanney, who have zero career starts between them. Brady Quinn -- who went 1-7 in eight starts with the Chiefs last season -- will become a free agent in March and isn't expected to re-sign with the team.

Another option for Kansas City would be asking Cassel to take a pay cut, but the team reportedly hasn't even offered him that.

Being let loose for Alex Smith should be some awesome motovation. If one had any talent.

Can't happen soon enough. At this point I would rather see what we have with the 2 QB's under contract than see Cassel again. I still want Geno or someone else at #1.

He probably offered to reduce his salary to $6.5 million and doesn't understand why he didn't get taken up on it. Remember that game he came back and got a field goal before halftime in?

120 million worth of combined contract worth just between them.

Hmmm. . . .I used to think that was Larry Johnson. He had some productivity, but was a total jerk. Cassel may not be that jerk, but productivity was never really there (one season perhaps). Maybe a poll - who do you hate the most -Larry Johnson or Matt Cassel?

No, his inept play got rid of ***** and gained us the #1 pick (though in the wrong year). There is a certain place kicker whose name can not be uttered that cost us a serious run at the SB by missing multiple kicks against the lowly wild card Colts led by one of the Harbaugh brothers. He is my least favorite Chief, may his soul rot in purgatory.

Easily Larry Johnson. **** that guy. I don't blame Matt Cassel. I blame the asshole who gave him an outrageous contract for no reason and then refused to replace him.

That loss is on Marty.

Linn Elliot sucked balls, and everyone knew it.

Linn Elliot was nothing more than symptom of Martyocrity.

Yep, IIRC he was shanking extra points right before the playoffs. He should have been replaced prior to that game. IMO you can't talk chemistry when you're talking about a kicker.

Yup. He missed XPs against Miami on MNF and Oakland in Oakland. Yet Marty was still too goddamned stubborn to replace him.

I'll never forgive him for that.

I feel the same way about Matt Cassel, Eric Warfield and Eric Hicks. They were 7th rounders or undrafted players who overachieved. The GM should have replaced them as starters sooner.
