Your expectations for Alex Smith?

Let's say that the rumors of this franchise successfully trading cancer for AIDS is true. What will be your expectations for the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs?

Mr_Tomahawk 02-24-2013 07:47 PM

Aids.

If people are expecting playoffs this year with ANY QB, I have a feeling we're in for a long season.

If they trade for Alex Smith, they are screaming, "WIN NOW!" Anything less will be a failure.

mcaj22 02-24-2013 07:56 PM

alex smith will get you at best 10-6
at worse 6-10

and probably somewhere in the middle at 8-8

that is who he is. accept it. you wont win a playoff game with him unless they build the #1 defense in the NFL and they have a long way to go before that happens.

After all, no rookie QB has ever succeeded after having sat on the bench behind an experienced vet for the first year.

Deberg_1990 02-24-2013 07:57 PM

Make playoffs and win at least 1 game. If you trade for Smith, your serious about winning immediately

houstonwhodat 02-24-2013 07:58 PM

He's gotta be better than Cassel but why wouldn't the Chiefs draft one?

There's no Oliver Luck but who knows.

Brady & Brees didn't get drafted in the first round.

If they trade for Alex Smith, they will not draft a QB for the first three rounds. All of the legit prospects will already be taken.

Sully 02-24-2013 08:01 PM

At number 16 in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

That seems like a pretty big assumption to me.

It's a win now move. They will devote the first half of the draft of putting pieces in place to make Alex successful.

Well, if you argument basically amounts to "this is what I can think because I'm going to assume I know what the Chiefs' long-term strategy is going to be based on one move that they haven't even made yet," then I guess there's not much to discuss.

Precisely my thought. I might start a thread that says "Your expectations for Monte Ball".

If they trade for Alex Smith, they are in full win now mode. Developing a QB is not "win now" for these guys.

The last thing any Chiefs fan should root for is to win now. That would be ****ing horrible.

threebag 02-24-2013 08:59 PM

Alex Smith Brand Enema reach for it to clean your assholes out

threebag 02-24-2013 09:01 PM

Don't get me wrong I would like to experience the success of drafting/developing a Kansas City CHIEFS quarterback.

Molitoth 02-24-2013 09:06 PM

I'd bet geno smiths team will win more games than Alex smiths team next season.

When Alex smith is garbage, I don't see how it is a win now move. It's a win in three years move IMO, when Alex is no longer a stop gap And Dorsey has his players in place.

He'll be the second coming of Damon Huard. Better than Cassel. Way, way below Trent Green. Good enough to be carried to victory by a strong team, but not good enough to win games on his own merit.

Dave Lane 02-24-2013 09:19 PM

I'll add another twist. What if we trade #34 to get him?

Alex Smith would be an upgrade over cassel...but likely similar to an upgrade that a plate of microwaved dogshit has over a plate of day old dogshit.

Demonpenz 02-24-2013 09:50 PM

I expect a 8-8 season don't turn the ball over and play good defense, especially with KC weather. It will win you games.

Regular season games, that is.

HotCarl 02-24-2013 09:52 PM

People here seem to think this team is just a QB away from a super bowl contender. In reality, we have a lot of holes. That being said, I think Smith could take this team from 2-14 to 8-8, and we build from there.

A 6 game improvement in just one season from being as bad as or worse than an expansion team is something you'll take anytime.

This is a horse shit thread.

We don't know what the Chiefs are going to do in the draft. We don't know if Dorsey will pull off some block buster trade. We don't know if an asteroid is gonna hit the planet and all this is mute.

Chill the **** out until the dust settles.

So you are saying we should take the black Matt Stafford? Good plan.

Nah - people are flat wrong on Alex Smith. He was decent for 2 years under a shitty coach with absolute garbage talent, he was damn good for 2 years with a good coach and tolerable talent.

Alex Smith is not Matt Cassel, nowhere close. Alex Smith is a credible starting quarterback.

However, 2010 is probably an accurate high-water mark.

They'll go 8-8. If he's around for 5 years, they'll go 10-6 a couple of times, maybe even an 11-5 season. They'll have a couple of 7-9 years in there as well.

Mostly they'll just spin their wheels, winning nothing but being competitive enough to keep the stadium full.

Just like Clark likes it.

Alex Smith, on his own, isn't really the problem here. It's the franchises refusal to even try to do any better.

Die in a fire. Thats my prediction for him.

Hootie 02-24-2013 10:30 PM

if he is the starter in 2013 and we re-sign Bowe I think he will throw for around 4000 yards with 20-25 TD's and 12 turnovers.

Alex Smith needs to get better in the red zone. That's the real big flaw in his game. Andy Reid teams have been pretty bad in the red zone (last few years) as well so that's something that concerns me.

still hoping for Geno

4K is too high, IMO.

3300-3500 seems reasonable for him. With a passer rating in the high 80s/low 90s and a 2.5-1 TD/INT ratio.

He's not Geno so folks are losing their shit. At the same time, he's probably the best non-Geno option out there. Again, all you need to do is assume that 2 years of learning under Harbaugh as well as an extra 20 games as a starter (1/3 of his career) is enough to make him 10% better than he was as a 25 yr old under one of the 5 worst coaching staffs in the NFL.

If you can accept that reasonable premise, then he's essentially exactly the QB I've described.

Some folks are going to be disappointed in him (the ignorant true fans that are expecting the 100 rated passer he was in SF), some folks are going to be pleasantly surprised by him (90% of this board), but in the end he's going to make a team exactly what it is. No better. No worse.

Like I said, in a vacuum he's a nice addition. He'd damn well better come with Geno as his caddy, though.

'Hamas' Jenkins 02-24-2013 10:42 PM

As I said in another thread, whenever you trade for a backup you are saying that someone else's "Not good enough" is good enough for you.

It shouldn't be.

I was saying this all earlier and I agree. I really think his ceiling is Trent Green.

If they want to ship a 4th for Smith and draft Smith #1 then I think it's a great move.

If they want to take a QB in the 2nd round or move back into the 1st and take whatever QB they like then I think it's a move that I can at least give a chance.

If Alex Smith is backed up by Matt Cassel, Ricky Stanzi or some scrub 5th round "project" I think it's a terrible shit move.

I don't disagree but if Reid wants to use Alex Smith the way Harbaugh used Alex Smith for Colin Kaepernick (take a QB in the 2nd round or move back into the 1st) I'm willing to at least keep an open mind.

I mean, we all wanted Clausen in 2010...it was Berry or Clausen at 5 and then Clausen at 36 or bust and we were PISSED when it didn't happen but it seems like THEY were right about Clausen and WE were wrong.

so if the Chiefs don't think Geno is good enough and like someone as much and feel like they can get their guy and have Smith help out this 'raw' product like I said, I can keep an open mind.

but if their answer to our QB position is Alex Smith and Alex Smith only my God, how terrible can this franchise be?

HotCarl 02-24-2013 10:48 PM

This isn't some random backup, like Cassel was. Smith deserves to be a starting QB in the NFL.

Do you think he's a "franchise" QB, do you think he's good enough to win a Super Bowl, we can argue about that. He was 3 points away from getting there last year.

But to say he is only a backup and isn't a starting QB in the NFL when he was rated 90+ last year and 100+ this year, when he lost his job due to injury, just makes no sense.

Yeah, I went over the Green comparison in a different thread, before everyone lost their shit. I wasn't going to bother in the A. Smith thread - folks are a little irrational over there right now.

And no, I don't like this move at in your intermediate scenario. Trading back into the first round is, as other have said, doubling down on stupid. Why would you give up your 2nd and 4th (plus a pick next year, I'm sure) to move up to take a QB when you should've just taken one already? Especially if you've used that first on a tackle in a draft where there's a TON of depth at the tackle position.

It's just dumb. If they don't take Geno and Barkley doesn't suffer a serious slide (and he won't), then WTF is the point? Unless you've plunger raped the Eagles or someone in a trade-down scenario, it just doesn't make sense to pass on Geno.

Eh, I know how this is going to go. We're going to take Joeckel in the first and I'm just not going to care what happens from there. The draft pisses me off every single season.

I said it last week.
Hamas has said it at least twice tonight.
He wasn't good enough for another team. He shouldn't be good enough for us.

Hootie 02-24-2013 10:51 PM

I'm kind of looking at the AustinChief scenario. Say the Chiefs don't like Geno. Fine. Say they can trade back a few spots, or to 10. They can take those extra picks and then move up for Barkley or whoever it is they think will fall to pick 20 or so (if it's their guy) and that's something I'm willing to give a chance to.

if the trade for Smith, draft at #1 and take any type of lineman I'm going to be ****ing pissed off.

for me #1 has to be Geno, a mad reach for a WR, or trade down even if you have to trade down for less value than you could get for #1 in typical years.

I'm still at Geno or bust at #1...if we trade for Alex Smith and don't plan on taking Geno at #1 we better trade down and then take a QB on or before 34.

Otherwise ****. This team better host and win a playoff game and Alex Smith better do things that look like a franchise QB would do.

I agree to an extent but come on...

Kaepernick has HOF talent. Not every QB in the NFL, even elite, is going to go to the HOF.

It's not like they benched him to start Matt Moore.

They benched him after an 18-19 3 TD performance, a 7-8 1 TD performance because Kaepernick has more talent than any QB in the entire NFL (arguably).

So this argument is a little ridiculous.

The other team has Colin Kaepernick, we have Matt Cassel. At some point you have to play the cards dealt.

And if Geno were drafted by the 49ers, he'd unquestionably be their backup as well.

It's a shit argument. We should take Geno and failing to do so will be a mistake, but that doesn't make your argument any less shitty.

Hootie 02-24-2013 10:55 PM

if Alex Smith is their answer to our QB position he, at the very least, better be as good/efficient as our old friend Trent Green. Anything less is fail.

Hootie 02-24-2013 10:56 PM

I'd trade our next two entire drafts for Kaepernick. Where can I sign?

It's not ridiculous at all.
Benching him for an unproven guy (no matter how confident you are about his talent and practices) was a huge risk. But Harbaugh made the decision that Smith simply wasn't good enough.
Of course, he was benched three other times, as well.

Discuss Thrower 02-24-2013 10:58 PM

My expectations are for a seven +/- two wins a year, a mid 20s draft pick and a first round playoff exit if they get there.

And the band played on..

He made the decision because Colin Kaepernick has more ability than anyone in the entire NFL

If this is the route they go, they better hope like hell geno doesn't go to Oakland and wreck shit Aaron Rodgers style. Cause the dudes gonna have a chip on his shoulder and will come at us guns blazing

Who was the last backup QB that another team traded for who even won a playoff game?

If the 49ers believed in Smith they never would have traded up to draft Kaepernick.

If the 49ers didn't believe in him, why should we?

It's not the 1980s. They didn't acquire Kaepernick as a cheap value pick then hold on to him for seven years as an insurance policy; they realized they couldn't win with Smith and got rid of him at the first opportunity presented.

Ability
Not anything proven, but ability. In other words... potential.
The history of sports is littered with the names of athletes with more "ability than anyone," but the bottom line is, you don't sit a guy down for another guy with "ability" unless guy number one ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH.

DeezNutz 02-24-2013 11:03 PM

My expectation is that '13 Alex Smith will be the absolute best that he'll ever be, since it's unreasonable to expect any football player at 30+ to be ascending.

So, not only would we be getting another team's backup, but we'd be getting a lesser version of what he was with his previous team.

Because they were a shitload smarter than Scott Pioli. Harbaugh said that Kaepernick was his favorite QB in that draft.

That's done. The die has been cast there.

Like I said, Geno Smith is still the guy to go get, but you're still making a really shitty argument here. Harbaugh recognized an absurdly talented QB was available for him in the 2nd round and he aggressively moved to go get him. It was a great decision and it has made them contenders.

We should do the same. But that's the only real takeaway there is to bring from Keapernick ahead of Alex Smith. Colin Kaepernick is more talented than Alex Smith...duh, the end. He's more talented than all but about 5 guys in the leauge.

O.city 02-24-2013 11:17 PM

If Alex Smith was so damned good, why did he crawl back to the 49ers after taking them to the NFCCG because no other team would offer him a starting QB's contract and after the 49ers flirted with Manning so publicly?

This isn't just about the 49ers, it's about the market. The market spoke to Alex Smith, and they told him to **** off.

Even if Kaepernick is Christ reincarnate, I'm pretty damned sure there aren't 32 of him.

Harbaugh made a bold move by moving up for Kaepernick. It's obvious he liked him, and didn't like Smith, but he obviously didn't like him enough last offseason to fully commit to him, because they went hard after Manning and when they didn't sign him they offered Smith a contract. He also got really ****ing lucky by Kaepernick ending up being far better far sooner than what he expected.

DeezNutz 02-24-2013 11:20 PM

Spin it, massage it, tweak it all you want. The Chiefs would be acquiring a descending player to be their starter. That's a fact.
