Internet Providers To Crack Down On Pirates

So, hypothetically speaking, what's the best way to remain anonymous while still torrenting/dl'ing?

Quote:

If you download copyrighted material illegally, you might get a warning from your Internet service provider starting as soon as Monday. That's according to blogs covering file-sharing communities like Bit Torrent, where users share and download movies and music for free. The crackdown is led by big copyright holders like the Motion Picture Association of America.

They should seriously just stop..... And no I don't mean the people DLing

mikeyis4dcats. 02-25-2013 01:21 PM

guess I should look into a proxy service

Mr. Flopnuts 02-25-2013 01:22 PM

Proxy, or shared wifi.

Fish 02-25-2013 01:36 PM

Torrenting will never be anonymous, simply because of the way it works. Even behind a proxy server, it's still not anonymous by any stretch. Your IP is the connection point when using torrents, and there's no way to hide it when you're downloading and more importantly when you're seeding.

Newsgroups are the best way to go. But that requires payment.

Another option would be a service like Furk.net. It's sort of like a hybrid newsgroup/torrent solution. It will search torrent sites for files, and download them to Furk's giant server, which you can then directly download from Furk. That way Furk does the dangerous part getting the torrent files from other torrent sites. And all you have to do is privately download them from Furk, which is infinitely safer. In addition, Furk allows you to stream torrent files. So you could stream just about any video you want, movies, TV, whatever. Furk is about $6-7 a month. I've been a member for quite a while, and it's really awesome. I can't say enough about it.

torguard.net
hidemyass.com
btguard.com

Actually, hidemyass.com isn't all that safe. They keep log files for 30 days, and they recently gave them up when ordered to do so by a court. Link

I use IPVanish. They don't keep log files.

Mr. Laz 02-25-2013 02:02 PM

if the internet providers start in on it you really can't hide

they will also start losing business though

demonhero 02-25-2013 02:05 PM

Use a VPN and they can still find who you are, but use SSL encryption and sue them if they try to read the packets.

newsgroups right now till psp is fixed/updated.

IPV6 opened up a huge security hole regarding VPN services that effectively makes them worthless with regards to torrent privacy...

http://torrentfreak.com/huge-securit...orrent-100617/

Quote:

The security risk is caused by a lethal combination of IPv6 and PPTP-based VPN services, which are very common. IPv6 is the Internet protocol that will succeed IPv4. The protocol is promoted by Windows 7 and Vista, among others, and most people are using it without even realizing it.

The technical details of the vulnerability, explained in this talk (see below), reveal that the true IP-address of users using IPv6 can be easily traced. Even worse, it seems that the Swedish Anti-piracy Bureau may already be using this flaw to gather data on ‘anonymous’ BitTorrent users.

The vulnerability is not limited to BitTorrent either. It can expose people who believe that they are hiding their real IP-address through nearly every connection.

In addition to this gaping hole in VPNs such as Ipredator and Relakks, the talk exposes several other weaknesses from a privacy point of view. Among other things, it is fairly easy to find MAC-addresses and computer names of people who use the same VPN.

A warning! Woah!

candyman 02-25-2013 04:08 PM

I have 3 of my neighbor's wifi passwords, Im immune. Of course they dont know about it but if you're dumb enough to still be using WEP then I dont feel sorry for you.

hometeam 02-25-2013 08:08 PM

They say this shit every 6 months.

Pushead2 02-25-2013 09:12 PM

I might look into IPVanish - is it the best one?

Dumb?

You know, most people don't even know what this is.

Kind of douchey on your part.

LOL I don't have a problem with you stealing their internet.

I'm saying most people know exactly squat about wifi security.

They don't know that WEP is old and outdated.

Other than your killing others bandwidth you ****ing mooch. If you were stealing my Internet, I'd make your frequent visits to kiddie porn sites, public... Then again my password isn't admin1 or whatever the default pw is.

It doesnt matter what your password is, if you're using WEP I can figure it out. Dont want your internet "stolen", use better encryption. And Im not killing anyone's bandwidth, the only way my internet browsing would effect someone's bandwidth is if they were on dial-up...and if that were the case they wouldnt have a router. So **** you.

How do you figure it out?

Backtrack 3. There is a newer one I think but that's what I use. Its actually fairly simple, I can usually obtain a WEP key in less than 20 minutes.

demonhero 02-26-2013 04:52 PM

get a laptop
get a wireless card
get backtrack
play with reaver-wps

ur shit belong to me

Looking at the new laws... they require "ALL" VPNs to keep records. So, if shit goes down and you though a VPN would protect you haha good luck.

mikeyis4dcats. 02-26-2013 05:19 PM

usenet rocks.

You said that you don't have to worry about your ISP cracking down on you for piracy because you'll just use your neighbors' wireless connections. So what you are doing is putting your neighbors at risk because you are making it appear to their ISPs that they are the ones pirating things.

And you pat yourself on the back and act like you're some kind of goddamn technical genius because you can use Google to figure out how to hack WEP.

You're a douche. Your neighbors should kick your ass.

It is still the best option, but the dmca takedowns as soon as movies are posted is getting annoying.

I dont have to worry about it, but I dont use their connections to pirate anything just browse. They're not really fast enough...I could but Im not very patient when I want something especially a large file. If I wanted to I could though. Never said I was a technical genius, so gfy

I'm sure different people have different opinions, but I've used IPVanish for about 8 months and I'm happy with it. It's not free: it's somewhere between 8 and 10 bucks per month for a subscription. To me it's worth it.

There are free VPN services that you can try out first. I believe BT Guard is one of the more popular ones.

That's not what you said. You said you are immune to ISPs cracking down on pirates because you have the WEP passwords for three of your neighbors.

That's douche behavior.

demonhero 02-26-2013 05:52 PM

If I was an asshole I would do what coupons.com does an record the mac address and the name of the computer among other things.

So don't use a VPN that terminates in a country with those laws.

Here is a decent article with statements from VPN companies about the subject of log files and other related questions:
