Wesley Welker XVI is going to test the market.....ok gang, bring him in, etc.

I'd let him run slot for my team any day.

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with the team before first testing the free-agent market next week, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Unrestricted free agents can officially sign with other teams starting Tuesday.

Welker, 31, received the Patriots' franchise tag last offseason but New England didn't issue a franchise tender to any player for the 2013 season before this past Monday's deadline.

It was the first time since 2008 that the Patriots opted not to use the tag.

If the Patriots had used the tag on Welker again this offseason, he would be entitled to a 20 percent raise from his 2012 salary of $9.5 million (paying him $11.4 million in 2013).

Welker finished last season with a team-high 118 catches and 1,354 yards, along with six touchdowns.

He had a team-high eight catches for 117 yards in New England's 28-13 AFC Championship Game loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but he also had a drop on a key third down in the second half.

Welker became the first player in NFL history with five 110-catch seasons and has averaged 112 receptions during his six seasons with the Patriots.

Old player is old.

Would be a nice pickup but if we don't break the bank Pats will match.

When is the last time he missed a game, two or three years ago? Plus he still had well over 1000 yards last year.

Yup, he would definitely be worth a look.

pkane 03-06-2013 06:24 PM

I don't see him being productive without Brady. His best bet would be to stay with the Patriots. They are not going to pay him top dollar, but he will still make millions.

He and his Hooters waitress wife can both perforate their larynx with chicken bones from eighth-rate wings.

I'd take him.

I think there's only a couple of QBs with whom Welker would approach the production he's put up with Brady, and Alex Smith ain't one of them.

Dante84 03-06-2013 06:41 PM

Bet he goes to Denver :(

You beat me to this. Actually that's a distinct possibility IMO. The Donks see themselves as a couple of players away from the Lombardi and will go after him hard.

I doubt it. They have Thomas and Decker.

Lets find a cheaper, younger Welker.

He is heading straight for Donkey land. Horse face will pay whatever to put him with Manning to win the SB. This is Mannings last shot and Denvers for a while.

I'm aware of that. Stokley is their slot. I think when its all said and done he is not leaving the perfect system for him and will remain a Patriot.

TribalElder 03-06-2013 07:15 PM

No thank you

Ace Gunner 03-06-2013 07:16 PM

His backup, Julian Edelman. Same player, about 1/10th the price. He put up identical stats to Welker when given the playing time.

Oh I do think he'll stay in NE. But if he leaves it'll be Denver.

Am I kidding about what? That his best bet would be staying in New England? No I'm not kidding. That system and having Brady gets him over a hundred balls a year. He won't be that productive anywhere else, even Denver.

I agree. He will get $9 million a year for 2-3 years. Smith just ain't a match for him.
