Teicher:Daniel happy to be with Chiefs
Daniel happy to be with Chiefs
By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star Quarterback Chase Daniel looks at joining the Chiefs as a homecoming of sorts, and there’s plenty of reasons for that. Daniel not only played in college at Missouri, but his first game for the Tigers in 2005 came against Arkansas State at Arrowhead Stadium. “It’s great to be back in this part of the country,” said Daniel, who last week signed a contract as a free agent to be the backup for Alex Smith, also newly acquired. “I was 120 miles down the road playing my college ball at the University of Missouri. There are a lot of the same fans, a lot of the same fan base. I’m excited to be back here. I definitely am. “I played college football here. I’m really familiar with the Kansas City area. I’m familiar with the fan base. I’m familiar with the barbecue. I weighed every single option. I weighed the option of going back to New Orleans. At the end of the day, this was the best fit for me and for my career.” Daniel signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent after leaving Missouri in 2009. He didn’t make it with Washington but signed on with New Orleans, where he spent the past four seasons as the backup for Drew Brees. The return to Missouri was a nice feature but ultimately not what brought him back. Football had far more to do with it. “As soon as I knew Andy Reid signed here, (the Chiefs) were on my radar,” Daniel said. “I knew what type of offense they ran. It was very similar in a lot of ways to the New Orleans type of offense. They like to throw the ball. They like to run. They’re a fast-tempo offense. They have weapons. “I did the best thing for my career. I wanted to be a part of a winning program and wanted to get a chance to compete. I understand my role on this team right now is to back up Alex Smith. I understand he’s the starter. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to compete every single day to push him. He’d be the first one to tell you that’s what makes a good quarterback (group).” The Chiefs were also more interested in football than where Daniel played it in college. They traded for Smith but needed a backup, having decided Matt Cassel wasn’t suitable. The Chiefs released Cassel last week. So they made a strong effort for Daniel, who threw only nine regular-season passes in his four seasons with the Saints. They gave Daniel a three-year contract worth $10 million. “You go off his production in the preseason,” Reid said. “You see he’s one of the most productive quarterbacks in the preseason since he’s gotten into the league. I liked him when he was in college. I like the system he comes from. There are going to be some similarities there once he digs in. (New Orleans coach) Sean Payton and I are friends so I know what Sean thinks of him. “Any time you bring in a second quarterback, you have to look at him like he’s the starter. He’s one play away from being that guy that has to go and win a football game for you. As you analyze those guys, you’d better understand that.” The Chiefs had some competition for Daniel. At least a half-dozen teams called his agent about Daniel after the free-agent signing period started. “I wasn’t necessarily surprised,” Daniel said. “I was hoping that’s the way it would be.” He joined the Chiefs despite their trade for Smith. “When you heard the type of investment they wanted to make in me, that really said a lot about what they think and what they feel about me,” Daniel said. “They know how well I prepare week in and week out during the season, I prepare like a starter every single day. You’re one play away, and you have to have a guy you can trust as the number-two quarterback.” |
Now he can bang all the hoes he used to rail in college.

Chiefs fan: "What's production in the pre season?"
|
He didn't say anything about Drew Brees mole.
|
The ****ening has begun
|
Yeah, he's probably thinking "This is gonna be a great opportunity to eventually be a starter in this league"
|
he may be right
|
In all fairness, Teicher is a stuttering reerun.
Listen to this dumbass shit on the radio. I bet he couldn't even place his order at Olive Garden without stuttering like he was being hit with a tazer. |
Would be funny if any of Alex Smith back ups show him up during preseason even though there isn't any "real competition". How would that muster out if Daniel outplayed Alex Smith in preseason only to sit on the bench.

I wonder why children who are born with cleft palates need to have that corrected, but people who are born with butt chins are normal?
Seriously, that thing freaks me out. He and Aaron Eckhart need to die in an ugly fire. |
I played golf with Jeff Handy once. I didn't know who he was till the round was over.

i'm not a fan of this guy, in the NFL - I liked him in college, i guess there is a part of me that is glad he got paid pretty handsomely.

Meh, he'll be a good backup. I don't think Reid will be running the same offense he was in Philly once he finds out that our only weapons are a running back and a WR that's streaky as shit.
Maybe in two years? |

I hope he grows a mullet, steals Berry's camaro. Only to leave it in the middle of a field of clydesdales. With traffic cones in the trunk and the back seat filled with empty Natty Light cans.

This signing is nothing more than milking more money out of Mizery.
Clark: How do we sell more tickets? Andy: Well, there's that MU QB from New Orleans. Clark: Brilliant! Those people are suckers. We've already stolen millions. Andy: He's not that good and he's too short. Clark: Does "short" mean less money from the MU fanbase? Andy: Nope. They're convinced MU has a relevant athletic department and have believed it for years. Clark: Party on! |
The beaker hatred on a guy that graduated 5 years ago is pretty silly. I could care less what school he went to as long as he can help the team. I'd root for any ex-KU player if they were a Chief, but none of them ever make it to the NFL.

I don't think anyone is saying he is Brady or Manning, but he has done good enough to be given a shot, IMO. He's definitely better than the backup we've had...and our last starter. |

Well, when Jokel helps fullfill my "smooth the hell out"-prophecy due being an overrated rook, Chase will get his shot! WIN.

Wouldn't you be happy to be employed for a couple million dollars a year for the next few years and all you had to do was watch NFL tape, go to classes and meetings for 8 months, and carry a clipboard and headset 16-20 Sundays a year? I know I would.

He's a preseason stud. I bet his trophy case is filled up with preseason MVP trophies. |
What hand does he carry the clipboard in?

In the meantime, it totally removes the incentive to draft a real QB like Geno or Barkley if they're just going to sit behind Chase ****ing Daniel. It would wind up being a training camp battle, and if Daniel lost, that contract would get him cut. And apart from that, even if he isn't Palko (very likely) he's no Russell Wilson. This is absolutely a case were height IS a breaking disadvantage, since he has neither the armstrength nor the brain of Brees, Wilson, or even Flutie. It's a pretty good chance that we got an ehhh okay backup. There's a significant possibility, however, that he's Tyler Palko bad. Some investment. |
Time will tell but much like Alex, Daniel and the QB situation as a whole is not very inspiring. And I believe any legit analyst would tell you the same thing.
