Bacon Grease - Rendering, Storage, and Usage

Just got chewed out by my wife for using her favorite coffee mug to drain bacon grease. We've never used it later in cooking but I've heard it's been done. I grew up as a butter or olive oil fryer. I usually just use the ceramic coffee mugs to cool it then pitch it. So I figure this midwestern crowd might be able to give me some tips as to how to render it properly to use it for cooking later, a better place to cool and store it, and some of the better uses for it in frying. For some reason, my cast iron skillet just perked up.

We dump it off into a measuring cup, let it cool some, and then pout it into a container we keep in the fridge for that purpose.

Main thing we use it for from there is cooking green beans in, but I am sure there are a lot of other yummy uses as well.

Strain out the meat so it will not spoil.

Chief Pote 03-29-2013 10:22 AM

Grease, straw, yum. :D

First, let the grease cool down a bit. Then, use cheese cloth, or a paper towel, or a coffee filter to strain the grease. Store it in a glass container in your refrigerator or freezer.

I use a mason jar for storage. I'll use it for anything from brussel sprouts to bbq sauce.

It's also great for frying your eggs in on days when you're not actually cooking bacon.

OrtonsPiercedTaint 03-29-2013 10:32 AM

Bacon gravy is good enough for me.

ptlyon 03-29-2013 10:36 AM

You mean youre not supposed to drink it?

BlackHelicopters 03-29-2013 10:37 AM

Bacon. Nuf said.

EagleRob 03-29-2013 10:39 AM

It's not redundant to fry bacon in more bacon fat?

 Seriously? That's funny.

You don't have a spare small tupperware piece anywhere?

Do you use her panties to blow your nose also?

Bacon grease makes great popcorn. (From all of us mid-westerners: you're welcome.)

I keep it in a Mason Jar.... Green Beans, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches... I really us it in the frying pan anytime that I would normally use olive oil or butter but where a little bacon flavor would enhance it...

Y'know that's one of those things that sounds great in theory, but the execution leaves much to be desired.
I wanted it to be good, but alas. Artificial flavoring FTL

I've never tried it, but you could always experiment on your own.

LOL I'm 40. Just grew up in the city with JiffyPop "pans" on the burner and microwave bags. Like some friends of mine who think mashed potatoes come in a box.
