Jared Allen unclear about future with Vikings

Jared Allen: Future with Minnesota Vikings unclear

Yesterday, we brought you a piece on Jared Allen, the All-Pro pass rusher who said he hasn't heard "one iota" from the Minnesota Vikings about a new contract.

The six-year, $73.3 million contract Allen inked with the Vikings in 2008 is set to expire after this season. He'd like to play for the Vikings into the future, but he admits he has "absolutely no idea" where he'll wind up.

"I pray about it," Allen told Dan Wiederer of The Star Tribune on Friday. "I talk to my wife. And we'll end up going where the good Lord takes us. But I don't know where that path is headed."

Prodded for a best-case scenario, the 31-year-old Allen talked about the past: "Best-case scenario would have been that we would have never gotten to this point. Best-case scenario would have been the organization would have gotten something done (on an extension) a few years back.

"Well, you know what? That's not the case. And I understand it. ... I'm just happy I'm in a spot where both sides are honoring the contract."

The Vikings haven't bristled at honoring Allen's current contract because he's been one of the NFL's most productive pass rushers. He counts a whopping $17 million against the salary cap in 2013 -- and says he won't take a penny less -- but Allen is not going to earn another head-spinning deal at his age.

His Vikings' future is very much in question.

The guy loves KC. Pretty sure he still comes here and has business here. Plus King Carl is gone.

Imagine him coming back and playing in our attacking system.

JFC Jared Allen, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in our front 7 would RAPE. 30 sacks from just 3 players.

Mr_Tomahawk 05-24-2013 08:06 PM

Alex Smith for Jared Allen, straight up.

Mother****erJones 05-24-2013 08:07 PM

Allen to KC next year...I'll dream **** it

Give them Baldwin and dexter.

RunKC 05-24-2013 08:26 PM

He's a free agent after this year so he would be FREE.

He would be the Justin Smith type player that we need on this DL.

:whackit:

Mr. Flopnuts 05-24-2013 08:26 PM

He'll be 32. It'll have to be cap friendly...

suzzer99 05-24-2013 08:33 PM

Well my fantasy of Tony G for the last year of his career is looking less likely. So I'll go with this for a while.

**** that O'Doull's sucking mother****er.

BossChief 05-24-2013 09:30 PM

I'd love to have him back for a year or two. He hasn't had injury issues that would be a major concern, he hasn't carried extra weight and keeps himself in decent shape. Be wouldn't be a world beater at 32-33...but could still be effective.

One of my top 5 favorite Chiefs players.

The Franchise 05-24-2013 09:51 PM

Like he's going to come back here to play OLB in his 30s.

Direckshun 05-24-2013 09:58 PM

Why the **** not.

He could be affordable. Hali might not restructure.

He would be our DE or Hali could move to DE and put Allen at OLB.

BigCatDaddy 05-24-2013 10:00 PM

Here's a thought. Let's not get guys on their last leg.

OrtonsPiercedTaint 05-24-2013 10:01 PM

It would be okay until the first time Darren McFadden runs over him.

The way the league has evolved, he wouldn't need to play OLB to be on the field a lot. 60% of the game is sub packages.

How about this go for a nickel 4 man rush

Allen
Hali
Poe
Houston

Dis gon be gewd

Why would Hali need to restructure? After this year, his contract is cheap. 6.25 in 2014 and 6.75 in 2015

His deal was frontloaded

Given how the 2008 draft turned out for KC, I don't really care.

We have two good edge rushers and we netted a lot of good players with the picks we gained on the trade.

There are lots of reasons to hate Carl, but trading Jared Allen is far from the worst thing Carl ever did. It's not like Jared Allen walked with no compensation. Jamaal Charles and Branden Albert turned out to be pretty good players.

DaFace 05-25-2013 09:45 AM

Jared is a 4-3 DE - he's a pass rusher. Could he make a transition to a 3-4? It's possible, but that would be diminishing his value to the team IMO. Especially at age 32, he's not going to be worth the money to us.

Yeah, 32-34 year old DE's really tear up the league  I'll pass.

OrtonsPiercedTaint 05-25-2013 07:14 PM

Jared will have a good time no matter where he goes. Maybe Buffalo could use the fading somewhat star power. AP takes all there is in Minny.

Using that logic is how you end up with Alice Smith as your QB.

You likely get a 70% of his prime Allen and backsliding after another full season. Even if we ran a 4-3 it's a stupid idea. Sorry, the jury is back and found you guilt of being a stupid **** once again.

This.

He doesnt want to learn a brand new position this late in his career for (hopefully) an up and coming team, prolly wouldnt do it for a contender either.

Glad we had him, he WAS the defense there for awhile... but that ship has sailed, time marches on.

It's a bad way to view the trade alone by the picks we gained, because the picks we gained likely changed our entire draft strategy.

Would we still have drafted Flowers in the 2nd had we only had one first round pick? I dunno. It's hard to say. That trade allowed for the best draft KC has had in a long time and I still credit that trade more than Herm's over-rated scouting skills.

Allen has 74 sacks and forced 14 fumbles in his 5 years in Minny. He's made 4 probowls and is a 3 time all pro in those 5 years.

They got more than they bargained for. Allen was a better player for them than he was for KC. They overpaid for him in draft picks then, which is why I liked the deal. Great pass rushers are expensive man, and Allen is a great pass rusher.

Nobody got screwed in this deal. People must have forgotten how bad of shape Minny's pass rush was in. They had been drafting bust pass rushers with 1st round picks for years. It worked out in exactly the way they needed it too. It worked out for us too. They didn't need Charles. They have the only RB in the NFL BETTER than Charles. We had LJ, whom I never liked due to his woman beating lifestyle and always thought was over-rated as a player.

Their QB situation, including the fallout from appeasing Favre, is the real reason they've had problems and they've still had far fewer than KC has.
