Surround Sound Help!

I bought a new tv, I have my surround sound hooked up. My surround sound works when I play a dvd through it. My TV and Xbox when hooked up the sound doesn't work. My tv shows the home theater is hooked up because when I use the tv remote it says home theater volume instead of my TV volume. I have my tv's digital audio output hooked into my receivers digital audio input. What can I do? Does this even make sense?

jspchief 06-01-2013 06:25 PM

Is everything run through the receiver?

It's really hard to say without knowing the receiver and how you've connected it all. Lot of ways to do it wrong and still get some things to work.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 06:27 PM

tv is a panasonic tc-p50s60, the receiver is a sa-bt200. The receiver only has an hdmi output for the blue ray part. So, i need to hook everything else up through different ways to my receiver for the sound to work?

kepp 06-01-2013 06:41 PM

I run my PS3 digitial audio directly to my receiver and not through the TV. I've never tried it any other way. Do you have the necessary hookup (coax or optical) to do that? If so, I'd try it.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 06:45 PM

Ya, I actually just tried that and I get nothing still. This is getting really frustrating.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 06:51 PM

Ok, when I hook up the red/white plugs from my xbox to my receiver the sound works. I can't get the netflix from my tv to the receiver to work though.

Silock 06-01-2013 07:01 PM

Is your receiver set to output to all speakers? Many times, analog and digital inputs will have different settings within the receiver, even on the same input slot.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 07:11 PM

Take a picture of the back of your receiver. Then take a picture of the back of each of your components. Post them here and I should be able to walk you through it.

page 6 is the back of my receiver.

this is how the xbox 360 connects with the digital audio

http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TCP42S60.PDF
page 13 is back of my tv

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 07:16 PM

does that work, or do you want to see how I have it connected also?

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 07:18 PM

Do you have cable or satellite?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 07:21 PM

nothing right now, i am wanting netflix from my tv to work with surround sound and my xbox for games. If I have to use xbox for netflix thats fine just not as easy to use as the tv version.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 07:25 PM

Just so we're clear:

Your only components at this point are:

An Xbox 360
Your Blu-Ray HTIB
Your TV

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 07:28 PM

yes

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 07:31 PM

Easiest way to do it is as follows:

Connect an optical cable from the back of your XBox to Optical Digital In 2
Connect an HDMI cable from your BD HTIB to your TV.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 07:32 PM

It is generally in your best interests to avoid routing connections to the TV and then back from the TV into another component, as it can cause additional issues with digital handshakes. It won't absolutely cause a problem, but it further complicates the matter.

If you want to check your TV's Netflix, hook the RCA cables up from your TV's output to the Receiver's Aux (TV). If that works you know you're outputting analog sound ok, so it's a fallback if you need it.

You'll also need to make sure that your 360's digital output is properly configured.

Page 12 of your manual should help. I'm going to go to the driving range; I'll check back in later.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 07:36 PM

it doesn't work that way for some reason. I also can't bring up a menu for my receiver there should be one right?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 07:37 PM

ya in the xbox menu I found where it says Dolby Digital, so that should be fine.

Chazno 06-01-2013 08:36 PM

I hate to ask a silly question but you are changing sources on your receiver when attempting to listen to the xbox plugged into optical input 2?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 08:42 PM

Ya, it still doesn't work.

Chazno 06-01-2013 08:45 PM

So only the TV is new? How was this hooked up before? It was all working before?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 08:47 PM

The tv and surround sound are new to me.

Chazno 06-01-2013 09:00 PM

your xbox is hooked up like this? http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/...e/xbox360.html

except you'll have component video going into the tv and the optical audio to your receiver.

Have you tried multiple optical cables?

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 09:05 PM

Look at this link:

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-3...audio-settings

What type of XBox AV connector do you have?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 09:10 PM

S/PDIF (TOSLINK) port on the cable or adapter.

and it doesnt matter anyway I connect with the optical cable none of it works unless I hook up the white/red and switch my receiver to aux. Netflix through my tv will work if I use this converter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA0U00D18035
but then netflix won't work with the titles that say 5.1 surround, it will make a funny noise. It does work however if the title on netflix doesnt say 5.1

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 09:17 PM

It sounds to me like you need to configure your digital inputs.

Hook up the optical input from the back of the XBox to your receiver's Optical 2 (STB) input, then press [EXT-IN] until you see D-IN 2.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 09:21 PM

Ya, I have done that it still doesn't work. This is why im so frustrated. I really appreciate all your help on this.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 09:42 PM

Time to isolate the variables. Hook up your TV's digital audio output to where your XBox was hooked up.

If it works, then it's something related to your XBox and/or its setup. If not, then it's almost certainly something with your receiver and/or the cable you are using.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 09:51 PM

Ok, I have the optical cable from the output of the tv into the D-IN 1. No sound comes out at all. However, when I use the volume with the TV remote it changes the volume of my receiver so that means that its hooked up right. Is there a netflix menu or something?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 09:53 PM

I have hooked the TV up with optical cable to my surround sound system cannot get sound when using Netflix. When using Netflix can only get sound with TV speakers. I want to get the sound to come out of my Surround Sound.

This question is asked on the panasonic support website. Here is the answer that Panasonic gives.

You will need to get a Dolby Digital decoder for your Home Theater System if it does not already have one.

Could this be the problem?

1) Make sure that your TV's digital out is properly configured

2) Your TV changing your receiver menu only means that your TV remote is programmed to work with your receiver.

3) As far as a Netflix menu, I'm not sure given that I've never used your TV. However, I used Netflix on the XBox. You have to enter the Netflix app through the XBox main screen.

No. Your HTIB has a decoder built in.

Is pcm Fix set to off?

and is tv audio set to d in 1?

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 10:08 PM

Digital audio out option is set to auto on my tv.

Chazno, pcm fix is set to off and the tv audio is set to d in 1

Good catch. That is the most likely culprit at this point. Many devices, like Blu-Ray players, idiotically, have PCM as the default output.

The most frustrating thing about this post is that if I were at your house, this would be fixed in less than a minute.

In58men 06-01-2013 10:13 PM

If you don't have a BOSE you don't have a surround sound

if you live in overland park, please come fix it!

This is one of the most frustrating things ive ever dealt with

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-01-2013 10:22 PM

After reading the troubleshooting, give this a shot:

Try connecting your TV to the Optical 2 input instead of Optical 1.

TambaBerry 06-01-2013 10:31 PM

OK, you guys won't believe this and I feel like an idiot big time. The Optical cable I was using worked fine for my last receiver that was a giant pos probably 15 years old hence the converter I had. Well I was digging through the stuff I got with this current receiver and found another optical cable. I thought what the hell i'll try this see if it works. Plugged it in and instantly the sound came through, I am relieved and feel like a giant idiot. I do want to express my gratitude to everyone and especially hamas for the help!

Simply Red 06-01-2013 10:37 PM

do you still have that pull out Blaupunkt tape player for your Z28?

Just remember this in the future: Isolate the variables. Don't assume that anything works until it actually works. Whether it's a small engine or an XBox repair, test everything piecemeal.

Ya, I will never assume anything electronic related again. Thank you for the help though!
