If you had the time to walk across one U.S. state...?
...what state would it be, and why? And would you go north-south or east-west?
Assume that you have some time off and quoting Simon and Garfunkel, you want to walk off and look for America with a handful of Mrs. Wagner's pies. Also assume that you are in your current conditioning. Take into account climate, scenery, wild animal attacks, proximity to McDonald's, and any other relevant criteria. |
Good question. I know frazod's would be Kansas, east to west.
|
Gotta go with Alaska, in the middle of summer, East or Southeast across the state to West or Southwest and then a boat ride down the West coast...
|
I would choose Hawaii, I like a challenge.
|
Gotta go with Rhode Island.
|
California, south to north.
|
Montana. North-South. Glacier to Yellowstone.
|
None of them. Walking is the slowest, most boring thing you can do. **** walking.
|
Oddly, it seems like Michigan south to north would be kind of interesting. You'd need a place with enough small towns to get from place to place, and I think it would work. You could also walk along Lake Michigan or Superior a good stretch of the way, and the Upper Pensinsula would be a nice reward at the end.
Florida, North Carolina, and Massachusetts could also be interesting (N-S for FL and W-E for the others). |
California S to N along the coast. Good weather and scenery. Likely to run into interesting people. It's a nice long walk, so that implies that I have an abundance of leisure time.

I picked Rhode Island, because, well, I am lazy :/
|
I'd go Cali or Texas. They have good weather and good variety. There's ocean, beach, forest, plains, mountains, deserts, and forests in both states.
|
Colorado. East to west.
|
I voted New Hampshire. In the fall. Everyone should experience the far NE in early October at least once in their lifetime.

We're flying, though. :D |
that narrow part of Delaware.
|
Texas. N-S, just to see if I could do it.

What towns? |

I suppose I should ask him. |
Colorado N-S
|
Vermont, from north to south. I have heard it is gorgeous in fall and it is not too big to walk through.
|
Virginia, W-E
Lot of history, would be fascinating. |

If you stop in Camden, take time to go up to the state park and take a mild hike to the top of the mountain that looks over Camden Bay. A view I'll never forget. We didn't spend enough time in Maine. You're going to have a blast. Well, if you like your in-laws I suppose. I'm jealous. |

I've never been there, so I'm just going to go with the flow. I can't wait to eat fresh-from-the-sea lobsters that still have that OH SHIT looks on their faces. :D |
I'd pick Idaho. You get a little of Montana/Wyoming and a little of Washington.

Question. Is this a non stop walk or do I get to take breakfast lunch and dinner breaks as well as stopping overnight to sleep. This is a Rain Man Poll so I want all the details.

Pffft big deal walking states. I've walked in four states in one day.

Being a Colorado native and growing up there, if you are gonna walk across the state, best to go North to South or vice versa, treking along the Continental Divide or maybe on the Western Slope of the divide.

But yeah, it's ****ing horrible. |

California. Where else could you see that much variety of culture, economics, landscape?

I wanted to piss on the four corners but I guess they frown upon that kind of thing. |

1. California S-N I haven't been there since I was 4 years old and I can't imagine having more to see and such a huge variety of landscape than this. Not to mention all the pretty women.
2. Colorado S-N I love this state but have been there many times. Walking the continental divide would probably be incredible though. |

How much time allotted for sitting on the porch, or in the diner, or on the beach, with locals and shooting the shit?

I mean, unless you choose to walk across Bataan, but that's not a state so it shouldn't count. The goal would be to walk, look, listen, learn, see stuff, hang out, and ogle the girls, my lord, in a flatbed Ford, slowing down to take a look at you. |

Thought about Hawaii but figured it would be such a short walk that other states would be better.
|
which derection?
I originally thought east wes, \my baas ... |
California. South to North. And I've never been to Cali. Just Nevada, Las Vegas.
Hope I have 2 months off from work. |
I chose Nevada, I'd be curious of the sky & any activity up there.

My thoughts without batting an eye. Rich with history I would love it. |

Come to Northern California where the tallest trees in the world are located. Oohhhhh Aahhhhhh. Go skiing/boarding one day then surfing the next. Come visit Death Valley it's freaking HOT! You can even go to two NFL games in one day.
|
Gotta go with Cali. (Seems to have) Great weather and walking along the cost should make for some great views. Cali also seems to have a similar clime to the east coast of Australia.
I was considering choosing a northern state in summer, but Im not really informed enough to make that decision I think. |

Alabama, north to south, would have a tremendous amount of biological and geographic diversity. Virginia, too, would be beautiful.
I would really like to do Vermont. Upper Vermont, east to west (or vice versa). I was very impressed with the beauty in that part of the country when I was there in June. |

I picked Minnesota. I could fish all the way.
|
I would pick Alaska but don't want to be eaten by a bear-lol
|
Rhode Island. Its small

Here's a neat little fact about Colorado: it isn't a perfect rectangle.
