Morris Clairborne takes issue with his PI call
KANSAS CITY -- One of the biggest plays of the Dallas Cowboys-Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday occurred in the fourth quarter.
As the Chiefs were trying to run out the clock late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Alex Smith threw a third down pass toward Donnie Avery. Morris Claiborne reached around Avery and knocked the ball down, but the referees called a pass interference penalty on Claiborne. The call, with 2:28 remaining, extended the Chiefs' drive and while they eventually punted, it took time off the clock and the Cowboys didn't get the ball again until 16 seconds remained in the game. Dallas trailed, 17-16, when they got the ball back. "They made a play and got a good call, I guess," Claiborne said of the penalty. "I don't remember it too much. I must have. They said I interfered with him, that was the call. I can't take that back, that's what they saw. I'm always surprised when the throw the flag especially when they come in late like he did and they call it." Replays showed that defensive tackle Jason Hatcher may have tipped the ball away, which would have allowed Claiborne to touch Avery. But the penalty raised other questions about Claiborne. Should Claiborne have let Avery catch the ball, seeing it was third and 10, and made the tackle, given the receiver was diving for the ball? "It ain't how we play," Claiborne said. "When you're out there at corner your not trying to give up on nothing, you want to be aggressive and that was an opportunity I thought to make a play and be aggressive and they just called a PI." Cowboys coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said they needed to see another replay of the call before deciding if it was a good or bad call. There were some close pass interference penalties during the game that could have gone either way. Dez Bryant was flagged for it and he drew a call. But Avery was confident of the call he got on Claiborne. "I knew we had it," he said. "It was just pitch and catch. He just held me and we got the call, that was big. (The game) is not over until you see 0:00. We just had to stay tuned in and keep the ball in bounds and we got the win." http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowbo...ut-the-penalty |
Meh. Give us back Berry's INT, and they can have that one.
|
Clairborne also got dinged by Charles that could explain his lack of judgement.

And they can a go to hell! Start calling at least 55 of holding calls that are committed by O-linemen then come back to this...
D-linemen being held is the #1 issue facing the NFL (and has been for 52 years!!). And QBs being pussies is #2... |

I sat in the airport surrounded by hundreds of Cowboy fans heading back to Dallas immediately after the game. It was heartbreaking.
|
Lots of Cowboy fans complaining about that AND the offensive PI on Dez Bryant. I personally felt Dez got away with offensive PI on his first 50 yard reception. I say if you think the PI on Dez was a bad call, you have to consider the defensive holding on Berry a bad call too. Fact of the matter is, KC has a legit defense and won the field position battle all day. That's why they won and Dallas lost. There were bad calls on both ends like there are in every damn game.
|
The Cowboys offensive line got away with no less than 3-4 flagrant holds and got called for NONE of them.
I don't want to hear one little chirp from the Cowboys. That got away with murder all day. |

Pleeeease!! When you hear ANYONE bitch about any call going against the Cowchumps, just simply remind them of that 4th quarter pass falling into and hitting both hands of a wide-open Dez Bryant with only green grass and white stripes between him and the end zone...
...and then... LYFAO!!! |
Priceless irony. And Jamaal Charles didn't ding him, he run him the hell over. That was impressive stuff.

We will trade this(proper) call for the atrocious call on DJ in 2005.
The game we lost that kept us out of the playoffs and gave the 6th seed to the eventual Super Bowl champs. |

Looks to me like the CB pulls him with his right hand and then drapes his left arm over his shoulders as the ball is arriving.
That's way too much contact to not be considered a penalty. |
Still doesn't make up for Drew Pearson pushing off against the Vikes in the 1975 playoff game.

WTF IS GOING ON
|
Once the air is in the ball it doesn't matter
|
Bad calls on both sides. Refs sucked yesterday
|
Something about that play there: why wasn't it designed for Bowe?

You can have the 3rd highest paid WR in all of football on your team, and he'll feel much safer tossing it to Jackass Mc****ington the backup FB/TE/WR. I can't fault him for it until it starts to lose us games. |
Once the air is in my balls, it doesn't matter.......
Wait, whut? |

I guarantee you the refs were not looking to throw a flag in that gigantic spot and only would do so with clear, indisputable evidence. |

looks like it was holding AND then pass interference, could have called both |

It looked worse in realtime than it was. Only a light infraction.
The optical illusion is Avery was pulled down with his left arm as he goes to swat the pass with his right hand. But the Refs seems to be helping out DBs some this year with an emphasis on calling the WR push-offs. |
If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I would add that if they did intend to throw a flag at such a key juncture, it would certainly not be one that hurts "America's Team". |

BTW I know he's been hurt but Claiborn has yet to live up to his worth as a first rounder. Anybody have that gif of JC knocking him back on that run?

The only reason this call is a story is because the announcers on tv made it a story. They kept showing a view that was after the Pass interference and saying there was nothing there. After several minutes of this, they came back from a commercial and showed the full play where you could see the PI then changed their minds and said it should have been called. However, by then it was too late. All the cowboys fans had heard for several minutes it was a bad call, based on not seeing the whole play. Either way, cowboys and their fans can eat a dick.

Also, on JC's trucking of Mo, he hit right into Mo's shoulder, the one that was separated. That is why Mo crumbled the way he did. |
You cannot pull a WRs jersey, altering his momentum, and then drape your arm over his shoulders with the ball in the air.
That is textbook PI. |
If you drape your outside arm over the receiver, you will get flagged. It's damn near automatic.
|
One of those tough calls...looks more like good defense than interference but that is the game.
|

I mean, nobody would ever intentionally do something like that. |

Couldn't really figure out why the **** they flagged it from that view, but you could see a hold when they did the replay from a different camera. |

Can we get the Berry INT gif'd up for comparison?
I definitely felt like we got away with that one but my feed was out during the Berry play that everyone seems to agree was horseshit. |

I just thought it was nice that a call that really had an affect on the game finally went our way...can't remember the last time that seemed to happen.
|
I don't think his or Berry's should have been called. However, I appreciate that the refs called it both ways. Both were nit picky.
