For real. This was mainstream advertising and completely normal and accepted. Unbelievable.

Why are #24 and #37 the same? Am I missing something?

10, 15 and 25 are in the running for the worst. I'd have to say 25 is my most offensive leader in the clubhouse though.

I think it was interesting that blacks using a product spoke to it's value/quality. The soap and tobacco ads in particular. Kind of "backwards" thinking in those times.

I don't think all of those are racist. Racism to me stems out of harboring the idea that your race is inherently superior to another. Depicting a stereotype is not really the same thing.

Is that really racist? I don't see anything here that demeans this person, unless you consider showing him in what was probably thought to be authentic dress to be demeaning.

The word racist gets misused alot. Racist implies hate. alot of these ads are just the ignorance of society at the time.

I voted for this one but it could have easily been a lot of them.

If I had to pick, I'd go with Pear's Soap. It goes beyond imagery or stereotype to an obligation of whites to civilize the savages by cleaning them with soap and thereby removing their animalizing pigmentation.

The Jap stuff is harsh, but it was a time of war, and called upon Americans to investment and nutrition to match the dedication and fortitude of a military enemy.

The rest could be belittling or stereotypical, but not hateful per se.

Older people just led such a different life. I mean I'm 42 and playing GTA5 and Madden every night and have a nice phone etc.

Everything has gotten so much more advanced in my lifetime, it is hard to imagine what people in their 70's and 80's make of things.

I went to eat with my Grandpa one time and he was telling me this girl at the gas station was bragging about having 400 pictures on her phone. Just had to laugh because I use a 32 gig card in my LG.

Times were just different. And that isn't saying it's all right with all those. Shit has just changed so much.

heh, i watched an old Eastwood Flick on Netflix from the 70s a few weeks back called Eiger Sanction. This flick had open gay bashing and blatant sexual harassment. A black female named "Jemimah" and a dog named "Faaagggggggoooootttt". .

a bunch of those weren't racist. some of them were just written how the person is suppose to sound.. like the mexican saying Keeds. Have you ever heard a dude from Mexico say kids? I guess writing phonetically to be authentic is racist.

I go to a fitness board, and it is brutal on this topic. Almost every thread gets a racist angle thrown in and causes arguments and threats because of very light moderation.

And it happens on other boards a lot leading to bans.

Those ads aren't any worse than some people's attitudes right now.

The Pears Soap thing was pretty damn disgusting.

I voted for 20, because the black people in those ads are by far the most mongrelized and sub-human of the entire group. They're depicted with behavior stereotypes AND skulls that resemble apes far more than they resemble a human's. Slap some fat red lips on them and you're good to go.

I voted for 36, though 10, 17, 25, and 39 are all contenders.

Like others, I don't understand how some of these are considered racist or even particularly offensive. Unless I'm missing something, 1, 5, 12, 16, 18, 19, 21, 30 (other than maybe the term if it's not Spanish), and 31 wouldn't give me a whole lot of pause. Is that bad?

And there are several others where the main "racist stuff" is an accent. Numbers 5, 9, 22 (other than maybe the servant theme), and 26 are perhaps insulting if you consider those accents to be dumb or uneducated, but I guess I don't view them as inherently racist. Still not advisable, of course, but not horrendous.

I am sure some of you guys live in small towns and know that a lot of older people really are racist to this day. Hell, everywhere.

It's not a good excuse, but they are just older and the mindset is completely different if they haven't evolved with the times.

These ads simply have no shock value to me because most older people are much different and still will call people ****ers and shit behind their back.

The war propaganda stuff is what it is. I don't see it being racist as much as defining the enemy as evil in war time. Japan, Germany, Italy, all had posters of them as evil or murderers.

That kind of war propaganda is a psychological device. It is much easier to drum up a strong hatred for the enemy when they are depicted as something subhuman.

In reality, they are just like you and me. But recognizing yourself in someone else creates empathy and compassion. Empathy and compassion do not fuel the war machine.

Watch the movie "Letters From Iwo Jima". It is absolutely heartbreaking. War is hell.

When I was a kid, my mom would buy those packs that contained half a dozen small bags of Fritos for our school lunch boxes. They came with a little paper Frito Bandido mustache. It had two little extensions that you could stick up your childlike nose to hold it on, so you could walk around at lunch saying, "I am the Frito Bandido."

Today's society is the most racist it's ever been. Because we're forced to think of it every day, we can't look at anything without going thru our 'racist' filter first.
