Shoutout to Derrick Johnson

Last night, my son and a few of his friends went trick or treating in a nice area of Lee's Summit... turns out that Derrick Johnson lives up in that area.

He gave out autographed football cards to the kids. My son got a 2006 football DJ football card from him and a high-five.

My son was soooooo excited about this. He is 12 now and REALLY starting to understand football.

You hear about athletes doing douchey things... so I wanted to share this cool story. It made my son and his friends night.

RealSNR 11-01-2013 12:35 PM

Your son's choice to be a fan. Hope he gets a clue.

ptlyon 11-01-2013 12:35 PM

That's cool

That's awesome.

DJ seems like a good guy. I remember hearing years ago that he really got his priorities straight and has become a leader on this team. I enjoyed hearing him on the Jim Rome Show yesterday also.

ptlyon 11-01-2013 12:38 PM

"Thanks Mr.Johnson. Please win this weekend and then thunder**** Manning when you play him."

Did he have off-the-field problems coming out of college or something? I don't remember.

Frazod 11-01-2013 12:38 PM

Nice

TimBone 11-01-2013 12:39 PM

DJ has become one of my favorite Chiefs over the last few years. On and off the field, he's one of the good guys.

I don't think it was ever a legal problem or anything related to substance abuse, but I had read things about his heavy drinking that he took care of.

Even though he seemed to be on the "Alex Gordon development timeline," he's really come along. Proud to have a guy like that on the team I root for.

Strongside 11-01-2013 12:42 PM

A coworker was telling me that they used to live in the same neighborhood as Tony G back in the day and that there were 2 lines to his house...one for autographs and one for kids that actually wanted candy. I thought that was funny, lol.

Was October doing the candy line?

If so, I'd totally be in that one.

DJ's left nut 11-01-2013 12:57 PM

What an asshole.

The guy is driving down the value of every autograph that I put my hard earned money down for by giving them away.

I know he's a Longhorn and all, but surely at some point someone explained supply and demand curves to him. Thanks a lot - dick.

Somewhere an angel gets his wings and a young fan gets a pic with some cheerleader that allows him to explore some "bloomers."

His coming out party game against Denver was something special. I remember being worried it was all just a fluke, and then he just kept getting better. He is now the heart and soul of arguably the NFL's best D.

Solid.

This is what I hear as well. There was no legal issues at all as far as I am aware of, but I do recall hearing a story about his drinking problem. IIRC, this occurred under Haley where the management had to do something about it.

Can't remember all the details, but it's about best I can go off by memory.

Yep. He's been consistently good, though never flashy, for years. And always very humble.

Shocking that the media never picks these stories for the front page of the sports section.

Perhaps, but you can't say that was why. DJ was at best mediocre before then. It lit a fire under his ass.

Ask yourself this question:

If I, in the prime of my career, had played for teams that boasted Herm, Peeholi, Cassel, Huard, Sackintosh, and a wide-ranging, assorted cast of revolving dumb****s, would I not be driven to bouts of heavy drinking?

Yesterday on NFLN they were singing the praises of Hali and Houston, and one of the guys said "Let's not forget Derrick Johnson, who is the heart and soul of probably the best defense in the league". I was shocked.
