Tell me about living in Las Vegas
Seriously considering a move in the next month to two months. I have some great job opportunities out there, and my wife and BIL have more opportunity out there as well. As much as I love where I'm at, adult Disneyland doesn't sound too bad either for a guy with no children. I have some questions I'm hoping some folks here can answer for me.
1. Where do I NOT want to live around Vegas? 2. Are there some temporary places available for us until we find long term housing? 3. My BIL works in the restaurant industry, and low level jobs. He's slightly mentally disabled but has a very good work ethic, and is self sufficient. What are average wages for just above low level jobs out there? What kind of tip money could a busser make in a decent restaurant? 4. How easy is it to get a pot card? I've seen sleep apnea, and all sorts of crazy shit getting you one of these in other states. How relaxed is it? And are there stores I can buy it from, or do I have to procure it on my own? I'm sure I'll think of more as I go along, and feel free to throw in any pertinent information you think I should be aware of. I appreciate the insight, and info in advance. |
it's hot

Take me with you.
|
I just watched 3 episodes of counting cars
It seems you can stop people on the street at random in Vegas, buy their car, do stuff to it, sell it, and make lots of money just in case you are looking for a side gig Vegas would be a pretty cool place to be. Best of luck |
You'd be closer to me.

And lewdog does give the best handjobs.
|
Before you buy, check for uranium. I saw an episode of I Love Lucy once where they were finding uranium all over the place on a trip to Nevada.
|
Didn't you just buy a house?
|
Henderson is nice, not sure Id want to live IN Vegas.
|
Pussy Heaven bro. I think even Dolly Parton lives out there.

My best friend was stationed at Nellis. He hated it. Hot and dry all the time gets old fast. As a higher ranking officer he made a good living, but it's not a happy place to live if you don't, which could suck for your BIL. His troops had all sorts of issues with gambling and being in debt.
And if you have an addictive personality, you're playing with fire, because everything bad for you is right there waiting 24/7. |
My brother lived there for years and loved it. Always said it's no different than any other city.
Only regret was buying a house, had a hard time getting rid of it when it was time move. |
There are a lot of murders there. I learned that watching CSI.

they've got a bitchin' pawn shop. But you probably won't get more than $500 for anything.

When we went off the strip the town became very ordinary to borderline shit.
A huge positive is an airport that has connections to every major city in North America for dirt cheap. |

No. We are just renting it. We've refrained from buying to this point for this very reason. We knew as soon as I developed the skill set necessary in my profession to make a large income we would probably split. Quote:

Thanks for the info fellas, keep it coming. |
One of my very best friends lived in Henderson for about ten years, then Lake Las Vegas for about two years. He's now in SoCal.
Pro's: 1. Affordable housing, whether you're renting or buying. Nice winters, although cold for people on the West Coast. I doubt you'd have any issues with that. 2. Tons of shopping, great restaurants and "local" casinos, so you don't necessarily need to hit the strip. Lots of local bars and Sports bars, so catching your favorite team won't be an issue. 3. Four hour drive to Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, five hours to Santa Barbara, San Diego and not much more to Mexico. Phoenix isn't too far, either. Cons: 1. HOT. Expect a high electricity bill during the summer months. 2. Terrible traffic. The state seems to be constantly widening the freeways, so getting to the strip can be tortuous. 3. Lifestyle. While some people can control themselves around casinos, others can't. It seems pretty easy to become a gambler, especially if you have people visiting often. It's easy to piss away money for sure. |
I was stationed around there from 1995-1999 while in the Air Force.
Do NOT live in or around North Las Vegas. It's a really rough area. It's a city on North Las Vegas Boulevard before you get to the Nellis area. We lived near the base and unfortunately, that's where our daughter got sent to middle school. Our first time with metal detectors and cops on campus, AT A MIDDLE SCHOOL! There are some other areas not great... Avoid areas around the Stratusphere to Old Downtown area. Henderson is nice, Southeast. A lot of folks when I was there were buying/renting on the West side towards Summerlan. All the West stuff is newest and nicer areas. If you're without children, you should have a great time...lots of shows, obviously, and triple A baseball, and good eating. I had two young kids, and it's not the city for them. Dirty place, lots of panhandling, and sin-city kind of slaps them in the face. You're in a bowl, surrounded by mountains, so smog is horrible at times. But, the wind blows almost all the time so it gets blown out. Also, there was a problem with humidity increasing while there...lots of people wanting grass and watering lawns and all the big casino water stuff and pools. The increasing humidity was making the heat a lot worse. Not sure if it's better yet...they made a 'rule' that new homes had to have 'desert' landscaping, no more grass. The city is all about the service industry and your BIL shouldn't have any trouble finding work and getting a decent wage...not sure on the amount. Here's something that not many think about. Car Insurance rates are ridiculous! My rates tripled from my mid-western, Omaha rates. We made the mistake of buying a house while in the military...about went bankrupt. My wife went to work (department store and telemarketing) and bailed us out. I agree with Frazod about the addictive personality thing. If you or your wife has any problems with any addictions whether it be drinking, drugs, or especially gambling it's not a great place. Lots of people think they're winners and they'll take your last 20, and next month's mortgage if you have a problem. Another thing...you're in a city in the middle of nowhere. Everything is a 6 hour drive...Phoenix, 6 hours, LA, 6 and so on. Nothing's just a half hour out of town. I'd guess it's like being on an island although I've never been to an island. There was lots of work back then in the construction industry. But, things in the housing market crashed really bad, especially there. Not sure how things have recovered. |

I've lived here for 16 years and I really love it.
Always something to do, yet if you won't to have chill time that's good too. Summerlin is great, Green Valley is good too. I live in Summerlin by Red Rock. It's hot 2-3 months out of the year. Our yearly average is 80. We don't have ****ed weather stuff like tornados or hurricanes. It gets windy and allergies suck. As far as weed is concerned, I don't know, but Cali isn't far. Speaking of that, you are 3-4 hour drive from LA, the beach or 2-3 hours from kick ass hiking like Zion. We also have good hiking and outdoorsy stuff in Red Rock and Mt Charleston. As far. Single life, it can be difficult, especially on men because of the stripper mentality here, but you won't mind that at first I'm sureo:-) If you can make good money here, you will live well:) |

I'm hearing there might be some opportunities coming from a new business here in Omaha. Apparently the regional manager is a smart, good-looking son bitch, too.
We have casinos and old people and trannys so it's like Vegas, only colder. |
Quote:
134>210>15. The freeways have been widened so it's a breeze. It's not like t was nearly 15 years ago. The market crashed but it's recovering, although about 25% of that market was foreclosed upon, meaning great deals can be had. |

Also thanks for the prospects on some decent places to live. I'm bigger on neighborhood than I am on the home itself. It's pretty important to me. I hadn't considered the allergies, but that sucks. I never had a problem growing up in Seattle, but it's been ****ing brutal in Branson! Holy shit bad. Like, 9 ****ing months out of the year bad. So the heat is really just July and August, and the rest of the time it's pretty nice? Someone mentioned humidity. I assumed there was none. What do you think? 1 more thing. How do you feel about Rush Box Lunch requests? :fire: |

Yeah, your s first summer will be tough, but then you get past it. Sometimes, it's just like extreme cold-you get In Your car, drive to where you need to go, get out and go inside just like you would if it was really ****ing cold. If you're making good $, you will live like a king. You'll e able to live in a nice area with a bitchin house. Just get one with desert landscaping to help you with water bills. |

This summer was actually really mild. Sometimes it's 110° plus for like two weeks and your like "**** cut me out of this skin." Wasn't like that this year. I love the winters. It never gets REALLY cold. I meet people from real cold and they wear shorts year round.
Traffic isn't that bad. Only three freeways to deal with, so check for accidents before you get on and you'll be golden. Lot of dummy's on the road, texting and Facebooking, that's the worst part, but I imagine most places are like that. I live around Mountain's Edge, the new southwest, way the **** heading towards Red Rock, about twenty mins away. Very nice and quiet down here. With all the home market craziness, I feel like there are different kinds of people everywhere. People getting homes on the cheap and renting them out, the neighborhoods are changing. That being said, Summerlin is generally nice. Henderson has a different vibe to it then the rest of the valley. Not my cup of tea, but I don't get out much. East side and north Las Vegas are no no's in my book. Having a one and a half year old, my wife and I are looking to move out of here once she gets her degree. The school system is lacking (it was shitty twenty years ago and I'm thinking it hasn't gotten better.) I'm not sure if it's everywhere, but kids seem to be more asshole-ish than when I grew up here. This city can be nice, but it can be vulgar and somewhat disgusting too. I like the good parts and I won't miss the shitty parts. Hope this helps. |
If it's anything like Tucson.....you get used to the heat after a year or two.
|
I'm just curious if it's actually worse than Branson. Branson had a stretch a couple of July's ago where it was 105+ for a ****ing month and the humidity just drained the ever loving shit out of you. Death warmed over. I figured it couldn't be that bad. This year was mild, but I'm used to 100 in the summer and I was hoping a lack of humidity would ease that burden some. I didn't think it would add to it!
|
Quote:
That said, it's not anything at all like Midwest heat. The humidity that Carlotta referenced is infinitesimal compared to Missouri or Florida heat. I often complain when it's "humid" in Los Angeles, only to find out it's like at 50%. LMAO I wouldn't worry about the heat. All the homes have swimming pools, as do the apartment complexes and of course, work spaces have powerful air conditioning. That shouldn't even be a factor in your decision, IMHO. |

I'll be a shorts all year round guy. And 2 months of heat is less than what I deal with here. I don't figure it will be much different in actuality, other than the lack of humidity and the warmer weather the rest of the year. If it factors, it factors favorably.
|
Let me know if you do......I'll take my ass down there for a visit.

The biggest issue in moving to Vegas is the gambling. It's a very seductive mistress and most people have to be very, very careful not to piss away their earnings. I learned my lesson way back in 1995. I moved to LA in 1993 and would often do the drive to Vegas to party and gamble (and this was back when there were $1, $3 and $5 tables, everywhere, unlike now). I'd do well early in the night but the more I drank, the more I lost. I'd lose $400 a weekend, which at that time, was little more than I was earning net taxes per week. I finally had a decision to make: Gamble or drink. Either or. Not both. Drinking won. I rarely, if ever, have gambled in Vegas since then. It's all about friends, drinking, eating, etc. since. Good luck to you! |

My friend that lived there didn't have a propensity to gamble but before he knew it, he was blowing $2-3 grand per weekend (he was earning, so he didn't go in debt or bankrupt). But he sure wishes he hadn't blown that much dough. |
Good luck anywhere bro.

My son moved to Vegas 2 years ago and loves it. You do not want to live north of the strip. South and the West parts are the best. The Casino's treat their employee's like shit. Most jobs are part time and no vacation time the first year.
|
Bob Dole lived at Painted Desert GC for a little over a year and worked in North Las Vegas. Once you get used to the fact that it seems that 90% of the residents are assholes from CA, and get away from the strip, it's pretty much like living in any other city.
Be prepared to pick people up at the airport and act as tour guide 3 weekends a month. |
Good luck to you no matter your decision.

Lived in Vegas for 2 years. Worst mistake ever. (kind of) The Bad: Las Vegas is generally a shit hole. It's a small city with no career growth and no jobs except casinos and food service. Its a small city. If you're well off then great. But careers are very limited. The city is completely dominated by casinos. You'll get tired of it really quick. After a month living there you'll never go to the strip again. It just feels evil. The vibe here is atrocious. Everyone knows how sleazy and paranoid you feel once you get out of McCaran airport and smell the air. Imagine that feeling year round. Imagine getting used to it. Tons of morally bankrupt individuals. Not everyone, but a lot. Met a lot of porn stars, strippers, drug addicts, drug dealers, gamblers, etc... Don't have kids here. Worst part is that everyone thinks theyre cosmopolitan when Nevada has a high white trash population. It's just not that sophisticated in Las Vegas. |

Can't believe you lost your job with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. |
My dad lived there for 5 years and loved everything but the crime and occasionally the heat that would bust out car windows if you didn't have them well cracked.
The crime is apparently atrocious... but for things to do and cheap food you cant beat it. |
Let me get a buddy in here and have him tell me what he thinks.

The Good: You really get used to the hours. Nothing like waking up at 3:00 AM and walking to one of the many pubs that decorate almost every block of the city and ordering food, drinks and/or women.
The women are hot. Good chance she's a stripper or prostitute but tons of hot 23 year old women everywhere. Locals get the hook up to all the nightlife and secret stuff that tourists don't have time to learn about. If you're kind of rich or rich or wealthy, you will have an infinite amount of fun. In the good parts of the city everything is new, the buildings and schools and houses are fancy, and playtime is all the time. |
