Does Alex Smith deserve a extension after this season?

Does he deserve a extension to be our QB long term or do we take a chance on somebody else.

chiefzilla1501 12-11-2013 10:13 PM

Let him play another year, draft a QB, and see where you are at the end of next year.

If he makes the Super Bowl, I have no problem giving him the Joe Flacco treatment.

Mr_Tomahawk 12-11-2013 10:13 PM

This is his last year. He's a free agent after this year.

I'd have no problem giving him an extension if he plays well in the playoffs and we beat Indy.

What QB can the Chiefs bring or draft that would make this team better? Cutler? Draft pick? We can keep Alex and draft a QB.

Stop posting. Now.

AlexSmithDynasty 12-11-2013 10:18 PM

Of course he does and he'll undoubtedly get it. Reid and Dorsey see him as the long term solution, and rightly so.

Bump 12-11-2013 10:18 PM

Ya

I was a doubter before, but he has warmed up to me. He's done some good things. I think we can win a Superbowl with him as long as we get some better receivers, it wont happen this year.

-King- 12-11-2013 10:18 PM

Depends on how we do in the playoffs and how the contract is structured.

Hydrae 12-11-2013 10:18 PM

No

Draft a QB this year. New QB and Bray fight it out for #2 next season with the winner the heir apparent for 2015. Let Alex play his last year of his contract and either leave as a FA or sign for less and expect to be a very good backup for the last few years he has in the league.

tecumseh 12-11-2013 10:18 PM

Long term? I'd give him another two years tops. As long as Bray is being groomed and Smithy is moving the offense. That being said GIVE THE GUY SOME RECEIVERS.

Ragged Robin 12-11-2013 10:19 PM

Alex Smith deserves a kiss in the mouth.

ChiefsCountry 12-11-2013 10:19 PM

I say lets trade him to Cleveland for their two first round picks instead.

007 12-11-2013 10:20 PM

Ummm, have you seen his stats? No, he doesn't deserve an extension.

BossChief 12-11-2013 10:21 PM

I have seen him improve every week and if that continues, we just may have something here. No way should anyone that has any knowledge of the Kansas City Chiefs history be cool with Alex getting an extension at this point, though.

Div round we beat the patriot way in NE ......Denver beats Baltimore
AFC Championship we beat Denver at Invesco

Eleazar 12-11-2013 10:29 PM

Once the offensive line play improved to mediocre, from the Cleveland game or so, he's been good.

There's no point in deciding if he deserves an extension this offseason until the offseason, though.

I would prefer trading him for Josh Gordon and just one first rounder. Don't want to be too greedy here.

DJ's left nut 12-11-2013 10:34 PM

The guy is going to be responsible for almost 4K yards of total offense this year. He's unquestionably been in the top 1/2 of NFL quarterbacks this year and he's getting better. His last 4 weeks have been his best weeks thus far.

And folks are really sitting around saying - eh **** it, who needs him?

How the hell did you people forget just how awful so many QBs in this league are. FFS, Matt Cassel is actually getting starts still.

Hell yes he's earned an extension. Should it be some moronic Flacco/Romo style extension? Hell no, but if you can get him to sign an extension for 9-12 million/season, why the hell wouldn't you?

Be reasonable. The guy's been a good quarterback for us and without a proven superior option we'd be silly to let him walk.

mschiefs1984 12-11-2013 10:35 PM

Need to see how he does in the playoffs first

BossChief 12-11-2013 10:39 PM

Let him walk where?

He is signed for starters pay this year and next. Sorry, but I would hate to sign him this offseason to a big contract and him to get hurt next year or in the offseason.

I say let it play out and if he is playing at a high level by mid season next year, start the talks...even if it costs us a little more that way, it would be worth it in "cover our ass" bucks.

Garcia Bronco 12-11-2013 10:40 PM

With the strides Smith has made this year, it would be foolish to let him go now.

Bump 12-11-2013 10:40 PM

and do you think that Dorsey and Reid gave up two, 2nd round picks for 1 season? They are going to resign him. I just hope they dont break the bank for him (unless he becomes the Superbowl MVP)

BossChief 12-11-2013 10:43 PM

Another reason I'm reluctant to talk about an extension. Right now...

Andy Reid gave Michael Vick 100 million.

Think about that...

WakkaWakka 12-11-2013 10:49 PM

That could work. I think he's making around 8.5 now? That sounds doable..

Cannibal 12-11-2013 11:42 PM

He's improved quite a bit as the OL play has improved as of late. But it remains to be seen if he should be extended. They need to how he finishes the year, what type of contract he'll demand and what other options are available.

Only then can they make a reasoned decision.

Imon Yourside 12-11-2013 11:44 PM

I would at the very least give him Peyton Manning money.

Contracts in the $20M range cause teams to dump talent and saddle the team unless the QB is truly elite.

A contract at $9-12 M/year probably only allows us to keep the status quo. And I'd rather take my chances elsewhere than settle for a few years of feel good football without a real chance for a Superbowl.

I'd feel better at $8 M per year, which is where he's at now. No one thinks we are going to win the SB this year, so that means we still need to add talent to this team if we are building toward a championship. Alex only makes sense if he is cheap enough that we can keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.

If the cap increases as expected, Smith at 9-12 million/yr is cheap enough to keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.

That's really my point - nobody thinks Smith is an elite guy; a guy that makes all his teammates better. But I think we've established that he can win and win big with a good team. If he's making 'game manager' money, then it makes sense to keep him because we can surround him with that good team.

And for the record, but/for the fact that Peyton Manning is a !@#$ing quarterbacking robot, I would absolutely believe that this team can win a Super Bowl, or at least get to one.

So let's say we extend Smith for 4 years/$40 million - in 2 years, Manning's gone and this team has a clear path to the AFCW.

"take my chances elsewhere...."

With what? Who? You want to let the guy leave after 2014 and spin the wheel on Bray?

I think Chiefs fans suddenly got really spoiled by a competent quarterback and just assume everyone has one. Folks - 1/2 the NFL is woefully inadequate at the QB position. I have no interest in re-joining those ranks.

We can win with Smith. We don't have a clear replacement for him. Go ahead and keep looking for young ones, but if you give Smith an extension that takes him through 2016/2017, you have plenty of time to find that young one without falling back into the abyss of shit we were just in.

I agree

Discuss Thrower 12-12-2013 02:40 AM

On the slim chance he wins a playoff game he's the most successful QB the Chiefs have had since Montana.

Relatively, that means he's the second most valuable to the franchise but roster moves have to be determined in a vacuum..

That being said his value must be considered in comparison to the division. Denver will be the same team if not weaker than KC once Peyton retires and Osweiler proves to be a bust. San Diego is equal or greater than KC as long as Rivers plays at his current level and they improve their defense. Oakland is on par with KC once they get consistent quarterback play and shore up their roster with draft picks and quality free agents.

Alex staying on at QB makes sense if the team can improve beyond their current level or if the other teams deteriorate during his contact.

UK_Chief 12-12-2013 04:33 AM

In two minds about this. I was real down on Smith early in the season, even when we were unbeaten, then the O-line gets it's shit together and he looks above average even with shitty receivers. I will reserve judgement until the play-offs I think - if he shits the bed then we need to find a new QB pretty quick!

Smith's probably looking at 3600 passing, 400 rushing, and 25 total touchdowns with 8 INTs. He's gotten better as the season has progressed in year one of a new system with really horrific WRs outside of Bowe around him.

Yet, some of you still want to ride him out of here. I'm all for drafting a young QB too, but Alex has earned the chance to be a potential long-term solution here.

3 straight years of consistently good football, but some of you would rather be proven right about your opinion of him than actually see him stay here for a while.

Alex is a consistent QB in this league. He is not elite but few are. Odds of landing an elite signal caller
are very slim. Wake the **** up and accept the fact that we will start a good QB under center for the next 6 years at Arrowhead.

I would give him a 2 yr extension, draft another QB, and let them fight it out.

I'm happy with Alex's performance

KINGPIN CHIEFS FAN 12-12-2013 07:49 AM

Everybody seems to forget that Alex is Andy Reid's hand picked leader. Andy is totally in love with Alex and has been for years. After seeing the Chiefs get double digit wins the season after winning only 2 games with Alex as the man orchestrating the turnaround what do you think Andy will do about an extension. Just judging his performance on the first 13 games Alex deserves an extension and if he wins playoff games his bounty will increase. People forget real fast how lousy this team has been the last 10 years. Extending Alex will help the team move forward and keep us at the top of the league for many years to come. Have faith in our new leadership, the dark ages are over.

htismaqe 12-12-2013 07:58 AM

It really doesn't matter what we think.

He's going to get an extension and given that he's been part of an historic turnaround, it will likely be for a lot longer than anybody wants, even the people that really like him.

I'm with you there. But what about this scenario. Alex Smith plays very well and does everything possible to help the team win (ala Charger game) and the defense doesn't play well and we lose to one of those teams. What then?

I think you're 100 percent right.

The Chiefs don't HAVE to extend Smith this season. They have another year of control. Get through the playoffs, see how things work out, see how the draft and FA work out.

Things I'd want to see before being OK with giving Smith an extension:

1) Chiefs need to win final 3 games of regular season.

2) Chiefs need to beat an elite team at some point this year, though they probably don't have another chance until the playoffs (Colts are not elite right now... Chargers are more of a fringe playoff team)

3) Alex Smith needs to play at an extremely high level and be a big part of the reason they win that playoff game. (I.E., Chiefs win 28-24 because the defense plays at an epic level and scores two TDs, not good enough).

Smith is a big upgrade from Matt Cassel and is at least a credible NFL starter, but he really has been a very average, middle-of-the-pack starter.

60 percent completion, 6.2 YPA (worst rate in the league for a starting QB) and a QB rating in the mid-80s is not enough to warrant an extension, bad receivers or no.

He's done nothing to disprove claims he is somewhere between the 15th and 25th best starting QB option in the league. I wouldn't be in a rush to extend him until he does.

I say let it play out and if he is playing at a high level by mid season next year, start the talks...even if it costs us a little more that way, it would be worth it in "cover our ass" bucks.

We agree on something Alex Smith-related (Even if it is for different reasons).

Keep him thru at least 2014, save some extra draft picks and draft Jameis Winston.

Why do people keep saying this? In the last 10 years this team has had 10-6 records twice and even won the division and was in the playoffs one of those seasons. While I agree that most years in the past decade have been bad, let's at least try to be accurate.
