So far it looks like we are chatting with a bunch of WR's and DE/OLB types.
Only 2 safeties. |
Any E/W Shrine Game updates?
Curious if we have representation up there, either within the Front Office/Scout depts. or media covering it? EDIT - Well, I guess it already happened, on the 18th. Man, I didn't hear anything about it this year. No info on who we met with, if anyone? |
So, I often get bored in the evenings prior to falling asleep, and this is when I find myself watching football tape. I figure I'll start posting my thoughts - by no means to I claim to be an expert or a hopeful amateur scout, but I'll post what I watched. Feel free to agree or disagree, and feel free to post your own observations.
|
I just watched Charles Sims, RB, West Virginia. I watched his tape against a pud team (William and Mary) and against a decent team (Baylor).
Positives: - He is great at recognizing pressure and picking up the defender. - He has really good vision, and reads his blocks well. - Very decisive change of direction, and alters his run very well. - His feet pump very fast, and he churns his feet. Because of this, he typically falls forward after contact for an additional yard or two, which could be huge for picking up 1st downs. Negatives: - For as much as he pumps his feet, he doesn't appear to have elite speed. It looks like he should be faster. This scares me because in the NFL, the defenders are much faster and will make contact very quickly. He just doesn't look like a game-breaker. - He doesn't seem to break tackles. It doesn't take an entire team to bring him down, and if the tackler gets a decent chance at a tackle, he usually makes it and ends the play. - For as great as he is at blocking in the pocket for the QB, he is terrible at blocking in the open field. He runs straight up, and is hesitant to make contact. The ballcarrier he is blocking usually ends up running into him and blows the play, or throws Sims out of the way. This is particularly troubling as our backup RB better be able to block in the open field on ST's - Toub won't take kindly to shit blocking. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/bLDcrS5QrXI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dPz1F8Iaf3s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I just watched Michael Campanaro, WR, Wake Forest. I watched his tape against a great Clemson team, and NC State. They were night and day different. Clemson was blah, and NC State he was everywhere.
Positives: - This guy is an athlete. He has the same bouncey-step and go move that Welker, Edelman, and Woodhead have (yes, they are all white). You'll see what I mean when you watch the NC State tape. - He is quick AND fast. Quick first step, and then burns when he's got grass. - He has a knack for finding the soft spot in the defense in the NC State game. He gives his QB some looks, but the QB doesn't always pull the trigger, or pull it accurately. - He seems to catch with his hands and not his body or forearms. Negatives: - Do they only have him run 2 routes against Clemson? He either stays on the line of scrimmage and waits for the ball, or he runs a 5-7 yard curl. Didn't seem him get deep, or very open against tight coverage in this game. - 2 or 3 drops against Clemson. Silly, nervous, shit-your-pants get off the field drops. - When he realizes the ball isn't coming to him, his body language sucks and he stops playing. Drops his head and walks like he's throwing a little personal pity party. - He seems to take an extra beat when catching and securing the ball. Some he double clutched, other times, he stares at it in his hands after the catch before snapping awake and making a football move. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Gp2VueZTWsc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dXT8dqhPKKQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I just watched Josh Huff, WR, Oregon. I watched his tape against Oregon St. and against Texas.
Positives: - Knows how to find space and get open - Didn't see a single drop - Made several clutch catches in the Oregon St. game - Could have made more plays if his QB looked his way. He was always, always getting open. - Decent run blocking - Has no fear going across the middle - Great burst - A very physical receiver. Almost reminds me of an offensive version of Brandon Flowers. Negatives: - I honestly didn't see one. I ****ing love this guy!!! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/AjuWUUhzZCU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/k_l2zP0yNrw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Nice thread. Thanks for the homework. reallly good stuff.

Thanks!
Let's be sure to catch a any tidbits that come from the combine. "Chiefs scouts were talking to..." "Player X interviewed with..." "Chiefs staff was watching player X closely during Y drill" That's the stuff we're looking for. |

damn, campanaro is quick as hell. i'd be happier than all get out with either guy! i'm praying to god the chiefs don't take a wr in the first round. this draft is so deep at wr it's insane.

For instance, a Panther's beat writer could mention that he saw a prospect talking to Carolina's brass, and the Bengals and Chiefs reps were there as well. Or a prospect could be talking to his hometown/college newspaper, and namedrop who he spoke with at the combine. Or his agent could say what teams are asking about him. Its totally random and scatter shot, but great info to catch. Some posters are really, really good at finding it, and it helps the thread. |
I will add Billy Turner later tonight.
Edit - already got him. This makes twice that we've spoken to him. |
He would be the perfect fit for the CHIEFS. I hope he is on the board when they pick in the 3rd round.

I like how physical Dixon is and the mentality that he plays with but he has lapses in coverage, takes inconsistent angles, and also doesn't wrap up the ball career a lot of the times.

Add Jason Verrett to that list as well as Stephen Tuitt.

Updated, thanks fellas.
|
Looks like we are very focused on WR's, DE's and Secondary.
Its... Its like they know what we want... |
Any chance the OP could list projected round of each player? Even a rough break down like 1, 2/3, late, would be helpful.
|

The fun is that these fellas are all heavily debated over, and outside the 1st and 2nd round, it's all a cluster****. Happy to do so, though. |
Well, you can start with the definite first rounders:
1st: Ha ha Dix Calvin Pryor Marquise Lee Mike Evans Rasheed Hageman |
Better yet, let's try to make a big board out of all of the players that the Chiefs have talked to. I wonder how that will go in predicting who we pick on draft day and how our views line up with that of the Chiefs.
|
Yeah, this thread usually goes that route when all the visits and work outs and pro day reports have come in.
A mock using only these guys, a big board of only these guys, etc... I look to the draft nicks to break down the smaller school guys and less well known guys. Feel free to offer insight! |

Chiefs | Two interviewed at combine
Wed, 26 Feb 2014 00:40:17 -0800 Missouri DE Kony Ealy and Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard were interviewed at the NFL Scouting Combine by the Kansas City Chiefs. I read that Ealy kicked ass in the 3 cone drill beating damn near everybody including WR's and RBs. Also he had 9 1/2 sacks this year. |

2 years ago, it was 4/8.
Last year I feel like it wasn't as accurate if a list as it could have been... More participation this year so far... But we got just 2 last year. There was a lot FA activity last year also, maybe because the draft talent sucked, so I'm curious how that will impact this years selections, since the talent is better. |
Kansas City Chiefs 2014 NFL Draft interests tracker
By Joel Thorman @JoelThorman on Feb 25 2014, 4:37p 53 This is an updating list of players the Kansas City Chiefs have been connected to ahead of the 2014 NFL Draft, whether that's pro day visits, private workouts, Senior Bowl interviews, Combine interviews or rumored interest. Our annual Kansas City Chiefs NFL Draft track returns for the 2014 NFL Draft season. This will be the sixth year we've done this post. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous Chiefs Draft Interests: 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The table below includes a list of prospects who have had some sort of interaction with the Chiefs, whether that's a pre-draft workout, Chiefs scouting attending their pro day or interviews at the Senior Bowl or Combine. There is also the catch-all "rumored interest" for those rumors that get started and nobody seems to know where they come from. The projected round comes from NFL Draft Scout for consistency. We know other places have them rated differently. Chiefs GM John Dorsey told the KC Star that they will interview about 75 percent of the players before the 2014 NFL Draft. So this isn't a complete list by any means. See any others? Drop it in the comments. The players names include links back to the source of the information. @TerezPaylor of the KC Star is someone you're going to need to be following for draft news about the Chiefs this year. Pos. Thanks for the link.
I'm double checking to make sure we have legit interest, as opposed to someone saying we "should have interest." There's a difference, and that compromises this exercise. The 5 names on his list that we don't have so far: Odell Beckham: God, I want him, but the link that the guy points to as evidence is nothing more than people saying we should draft him. No interest reported yet, so I'm not adding him to our list. Brandon Dixon - Talked to Chiefs scouts. Adding him. Louis Nix - Met with Chiefs. Adding him. Chris Borland - Informal meeting with Chiefs. Adding him. Kenny Ladler - Met with Chiefs at Sr. Bowl. Adding him. Will update tonight. Thanks! |

Okay, so I have a question.
How should we approach Pro Days for this exercise? Should we add the draftable prospects from those teams we visited? Only the specific players we were seen "talking to" at the pro days? I also don't know the teams that well, so I'll need help determining which players to add to the list. Appreciate the insight, fellas. |
