First practice report: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt...cle775191.html

Chiefs training camp report, July 21: Drops abound in first practice

By TEREZ A. PAYLOR
The Kansas City Star
07/21/2014 11:51 AM ST. JOSEPH

The Chiefs held their first practice of training camp Monday morning at Missouri Western State University. Only rookies and quarterbacks were required to attend, although a few select veterans were also in attendance.

A few quick notes and observations:

Approximately 35 players were in attendance and practiced today, including several rookies and first-year players. A few notable names who participated were tight end Travis Kelce (who is coming off microfracture knee surgery and ran a few routes), receiver Weston Dressler (a Canadian Football League transport), receiver Kyle Williams (recovering from ACL surgery), receiver A.J. Jenkins and cornerback Chris Owens.

Jenkins and Owens are veterans, but they each missed a healthy portion of organized team activities due to hamstring injuries.

There were a number of drops today, which isn’t totally unexpected for the first day. Jenkins, Dressler, Williams, De’Anthony Thomas, Demetrius Harris and Deon Anthony are among the players who had drops throughout the course of the day. Some of the players listed above had multiple drops, including Jenkins and Anthony.

Kelce got some work as a deep snapper, which could affect tight end Sean McGrath, who serves as the backup behind Thomas Gafford. If Kelce proves he can handle the job in a pinch, the Chiefs could be more willing to go with the intriguing Harris instead of McGrath as the third tight end. Just something to keep an eye on.

Rookie quarterback Aaron Murray took snaps Monday, which probably means he’s ineligible to be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list. We’re checking with the Chiefs to make sure that’s the case.

The Chiefs didn’t practice in pads, so there’s only so much that can be gleaned from today’s practice.

However, quarterback Alex Smith snapped off some nice passes during the final team period. Two went to Thomas and another went to A.J. Jenkins.

Thomas, by the way, spent most of his time at running back, though he often ran a lot of short routes or motioned out of the backfield before the snap.

Rookie cornerback Phillip Gaines had a nice day. By my count, he knocked away a pass and had coverage on at least three more incompletions. He did get beat by Jerrell Jackson on a deep route, though. Murray made the throw, which hung in the air for a bit but looked pretty coming out of his hand.

Receiver Frankie Hammond had a nice practice. He blew past cornerback Brandon Jones on a go route for a touchdown. Murray made the throw.

Murray also forced a pass into coverage downfield. The pass, which was intended for Hammond, was not caught. But it was not a great decision.

Otherwise, Murray — who is still wearing a brace on his right knee — looked unencumbered by the knee injury he suffered last November.

Linebacker Alonzo Highsmith made a nice red-zone interception. Linebacker Ben Johnson deflected an Alex Smith pass over the middle.

Draft the guy to be a dynamic end, winds up a long snapper.

Great Expectations!!

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/chiefs-...0511--nfl.html

Dee Ford
''I don't want to say football is my life, but it's what I do 90 percent of my day,'' Ford said. ''If you want to be great, it's more of a mentality than actually playing the game. You have preparation before you even step on the field.''

WHO PLAYS CORNERBACK? The release of Flowers saved the Chiefs about $15 million in salary cap space over two seasons. It also created a gaping void at cornerback. Marcus Cooper and Ron Parker are first in line, but keep an eye on Gaines, who has a bigger frame and seems to fit what Reid and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton prefer in their cornerbacks.

Flowers Was the gaping void on the field.

We had hope and excitement in 1998. And 2004. And 2005.

And 2011. And 2012.

The only time we had hope and excitement when it was actually warranted was 2003. And that was just another routine one-and-done playoff loss.

It's never good to have hope and excitement.

She's really going to change this time, has promised to atone for her drug use, cheating and giving us fan-herpes in the 2nd half of the playoff game last year? She knows she's lost our trust and wants to earn it back, beginning with THIS act of fellatio.

Little do we know, it's bound to turn into some GHB sodomy to end the season.

Turned out well.

It's tried, but true. Tale as old as time.

I'm depressed by how short Murray is. Nope. Not the answer.

Speaking of Gaines taking over for Flowers.... Whats the typical learning curve for bump and run corners? Cooper was pretty much thrown into the fire, and I suspect it's a quicker curve than learning complex zone drops...

saphojunkie 07-21-2014 04:16 PM

My boy Frankie Hammond gonna make this team, dammit.

You're asking if practice lasts 7 hrs? No. It does not last 7 hours.

Well, he probably well be the dime corner to start. He won't get rushed.

You know in that infamous Eric Fisher draft, true fan reaction gif/pic? I'm dying for someone to crop the guy to the right and a few rows back who has his arms crossed and is visibly not happy with the Fisher selection, out of the pic and make it their profile pic. He's like the only guy in the pic/gif who isn't cheering and he looks pissed as shit.

It'd be funny as shit if someone did that.

Dayze 07-21-2014 09:06 PM

I'm convinced that guy is a CP member.

It's all up to him. It's probably going to come down to who has the most special teams value.

Someone posted a pic of him and, I think, Allen and Colquitt in Halloween costumes. Kush looked like a chubby frat douche in that pic. Your pic gives me more faith.

He's probably about the same size as Drew Brees and Russel Wilson.

Day 2 Report

Quote:

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the second day of their early portion of training camp, which includes rookies, quarterbacks and select injured players. There was one addition to Tuesday's practice: LT Eric Fisher.

The Chiefs No. 1 pick was not present on Monday but did arrive on Tuesday. Since Fisher was injured over the offseason, he's eligible to participate in this early portion. The veterans will arrive on Wednesday for the official start of camp on Thursday.

Fisher appeared to be moving around fine during individual drills. I didn't notice anything major with his shoulder, which he had surgery on after last season. The Chiefs did some team drills, which Fisher participated in. He did not participate in team drills during the offseason program, so this is a step forward for him.

There were a few changes to the attendance list from Monday. David Van Dyke and Joe McKnight, who were placed on the PUP list on Monday, were both in attendance but not practicing. LB DeRon Furr was a no-show while FB James Baker remained out for what a Chiefs spokesperson called "personal reasons" on Monday.

The Chiefs did a few more team drills on Tuesday than they did on Monday but without the full squad there aren't any major takeaways from practice.

Practice observations

- De'Anthony Thomas continues to do the bulk of his individual drills with the running backs.

- John Dorsey wore his usual grey Chiefs sweatshirt with khaki shorts.

- Chiefs running backs coach Eric Bieniemy is vocal. He'll be a fun one to listen to if you're attending camp.

- With Fisher now in attendance, the Chiefs had four offensive linemen. Fisher lined up at left tackle, Laurent Duvernary-Tardif at left guard, Ben Gottschalk at center and Zach Fulton at right guard. During one team drill, the Chiefs simply had no right tackle. Made those blitz pick-ups pretty hard!

- Travis Kelce had an excellent jumping catch in the end zone during red zone work.

- Ben Gottschalk had a bad snap over Chase Daniel's head. On the next play, Daniel flubbed a handoff (or play-action?) to the running back.

- Jerrell Jackson showed some nice hands to pull down a pass with Phillip Gaines in coverage. Jackson later had a nice jump ball catch in red zone work.

- Gaines responded later with a nice pass break-up. He seems to be having a better start to camp than early on in the offseason workouts.

- Frankie Hammond Jr. said that as a receiver he has to know every receiver position on the field. Considering some of his college play calls were just one word, this West Coast Offense is a learning curve. Hammond has been one of the top players these first two days.

- Demetrius Harris continues to make acrobatic catches. Along with the good comes some bad. Harris also dropped some, including one in the red zone with a jump ball battle he needs to win.

- Tip drill: Chris Owens tipped a pass across the middle and the ball went into the air. WR Deon Anthony picked up the tip.

- Aaron Murray had some nice throws but he was also "sacked" in 7-on-7, which is hard to do.

- Dee Ford is as excited about Tamba Hali and Justin Houston getting here as the rest of us.

Team Drills
This is 11-on-11 -- so something closer to real football.

- Alex Smith and Kyle Williams had a miscommunication with Smith throwing the ball short while Williams went long. Smith also overthrew Fred Williams on one sideline pass. Don't worry though - he looked sharp on other drills.

- Chase Daniel had a nice pass to Albert Wilson down the left side of the field. De'Anthony Thomas was also the recipient of a pass in the flats from Daniel. Later, while under pressure, Daniel one-hopped a pass to the receiver.

- Tyler Bray over threw Albert Wilson during team drills. He still seems to be working on his touch. He completed a nice pass to AJ Jenkins during team work.

- Aaron Murray is the fourth quarterback up during team drills and only gets a couple of pass attempts. But he got some extra work in after practice. He was the last one off the field (shortly after Bray).
