Board slowdowns, so threads locked!

Just a heads up. MEGA threads slow the board down immensely. I just closed a few that were causing issues. So if anyone wants to, they need to be created as new threads. I will likely be closing down ANY thread that gets in the 3000+ post range as we get closer to the season so if you see a thread that is getting too big, start a new one and give me or a mod a shout to close the old one.

Mr_Tomahawk 07-31-2014 01:10 PM

Tyler Bray does not cause issues!

Discuss Thrower 07-31-2014 01:10 PM

I'd like to motion that Megathreads get reduced to a set length of time.. IE a "Training Camp Day ___" or "Cardinals Suppository: August Edition"

Also motion to lock the dating megathread plz

Mr_Tomahawk 07-31-2014 01:11 PM

Can you put the OP of the original Tyler Bray thread into the new Tyler Bray thread.

TLO 07-31-2014 01:11 PM

Maybe a week for training camp stuff? A day kinda seems short. Otherwise, seconded.

Hog's Gone Fishin 07-31-2014 01:13 PM

If we'd drafted Johnny Football every thread would have 3000 posts.

Training camp will be over shortly and our first game is next week.

Doesn't matter now.

Bufkin 07-31-2014 01:17 PM

Where's the other Royals thread? I started another one but it got deleted immediately. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Apologies.

Direckshun 07-31-2014 01:23 PM

A third string, undrafted 2nd year player at QB having a good camp, inspired a thread so massive it had to be shut down so a new one could be started to handle the bandwidth.

Only Chiefs fans.

You can put it all in the "Bye Tyler Bray" thread here in a couple of weeks.

cmh6476 07-31-2014 04:52 PM

Any chance this thread gets to 3k?

I purposely don't go to browns boards right now so I don't have to read about that twerp. Knock it off ass hole!

Bowser 07-31-2014 09:29 PM

So BRC starts a new Cardinals thread even though he had 700 posts to go, and it wasn't even locked? What a suck ass!

cmh6476 07-31-2014 09:47 PM

so why does cyberspace not like big threads?

While I am not involved with the hosting of Chiefsplanet, my guess would be this:

Database query time is huge on huge threads.
Even with beefy databases - replicated servers we're talking about huge amounts of data being requested or pulled from cache each time someone opens a mega thread.

These big queries can start to back up and slow down everything else.

Hope this makes sense

TIED5573 08-01-2014 04:11 AM

Come on, boys!

Only 2974 posts to go!

You can do eet!

Yeah, that's the gist of it. When you open a thread, it has to parse through the ID's of all posts in the thread first, then hone in on the page you want to be on. Because of that, the bigger a thread gets, the more of a problem it is. In addition, a big thread that only gets opened now and then isn't a big deal, but a big thread that is really active can cause major slowdowns (since it's constantly having to re-parse the thread).

I'm on a giant hockey forum that runs on vBulletin (HFBoards), and they actually lock threads at 1k posts. That would be insane here, but it shows that even much bigger boards have the same issues we do.

They must have like 500 mods with the number of forums and the way they micromanage.

cmh6476 08-01-2014 08:22 AM

has anyone ever been to cyberspace?

Predarat 08-01-2014 10:21 AM

Those are two different things, though I'm sure people in the CP Facebook group talk about things when the server is being cranky. The old "downtime" forum is here:

http://s10.zetaboards.com/Downtime_CP/index/

You can also just google Downtime Chiefsplanet.

Probably something close to that. They have at least 2 mods per every team forum and others for "the Lounge", Baseball, Football, etc.

twoplustwo.com has tons of mega-threads and they've never had this problem. I wonder what they're doing differently?

Yeah, tough to say. Part of it may be that they don't appear to do a lot of mega threads for live events. The formula for dragging down the database is:

Big Thread + Lots of people refreshing the thread at a time = DOOM!!!
(aka, live sports events when something exciting happens)

Or it could just be that they're able to throw a lot more hardware at it than we can. Or maybe they've figured out some way to better optimize the database.
