Swedish police have reportedly raided The Pirate Bay. The Portal has been down for several hours. The site has long hidden behind the relatively lax laws of Sweden, but it appears it's exhausted the leniency.

DDL sucks, and not everybody is looking for single use data streams. Private trackers are nice, but usually require some sort of sharing commitment. TPB is widely used, simple and easy for your more occasional users.

That's simply a mirror of the original site. It doesn't work without the original site working because it relies on the links from the original site. It currently does nothing.

The movie industry has followed. You can stream movies cheaply on monthly subscription (Netflix, Amazon, etc)

You can rent new releases for about the same prices as the old Blockbuster as well. usually $3.99 or $4.99 on iTunes, Amazon, Hulu etc....

IT Crowd creator Graham Linehan was on Harmontown this week [he's in LA consulting on the American IT Crowd re-re-boot].

Interestingly, Chris O'Dowd in that clip was initially picked for the Jeff Winger part on Community until Joel McHale came in. And McHale played O'Dowd's part in the first American IT Crowd reboot that Linehan had nothing to do with.

It has drastically improved over the last 5 years, it is not where it needs to be. (I am speaking mostly of the TV industry.)

Never saw the American version (didn't know there was one). I can only imagine it sucked, much like the American version of Top Gear?

It had a decent pedigree of writers and cast, but they only shot the pilot, then NBC shut it down.

Haven't seen it, but it's apparently word for word the same as the British show.

Wow. That's absolutely horrible. The interview scene was cringe-worthy. Moss was the only bright spot. Total waste, especially since it is an almost duplicate copy. Parkinson was just so much better as Jen, and O'Dowd pretty much just is Roy for me.

If I were able to build a Star Trek replicator and use it to make a car materialize out of thin air, you're damn right I would do it.

The popular torrent site Isohunt just launched a new fully functional website—oldpiratebay.org— that lets you search through the Pirate Bay archives. This is a little bit silly, since Pirate Bay's archives have been public for years. But it's also a little bit useful if you've been having Pirate Bay withdrawal since the site got raided by Swedish police.

The funny thing is that the new site was built and hosted by Isohunt, a potential Pirate Bay competitor. The Old Pirate Bay is a useful site, too! Instead of just mirroring the original, the Old Pirate Bay has a functional search engine, working magnet links, and all of the old pages. To boot, there's even new content being uploaded all the time.

It's hard to guess what the company's intentions are for the Old Pirate Bay, though it sounds sincere enough in the announcement:

As you all probably know, the beloved Pirate bay website is gone for now. It will be missed. It will be always remembered as the pilgrim of Freedom and possibilities on the Web. It's the symbol for a whole generation of the internet users.
In it's honor we are making oldpiratebay.org search. We, the Isohunt.to team, copied the base of the PirateBay in order to save it to the generations of users. Nothing will be forgotten.

So torrent on, you freedom-loving scallawags. Because you can take the Pirate Bay off the web, but you can never destroy the pioneering site's legacy.

IsoHunt... that is a blast from teh past. I remember back in college using it to search on IRC for crappy movie cams and music.

Unfortunately, the residuals and music royalties suck ass.

I had a track play 59,990 times in 2Q14. If it had been cable TV, the result would have been anywhere between $20k and $60k, depending on the time of day.

Netflix paid $16.35.

Well fortunately, 99.99% of my income is derived from network and cable TV. But there needs to be serious reform, as so much content is delivered currently over the internet and in ten years, it's likely that at least 50% of all broadcasts are streamed.

It's definitely scary.

The other way to think about it is that it only had 60,000 viewers, which would be pretty unimpressive numbers for a single showing on TV.
