Barnwell on Saints cap situation

Quote:

Adam Schefter reported Thursday that the NFL expects the 2015 cap to come in between $138.6 million and $141.8 million, up from $133 million this year. Split the difference between those two figures and the Saints are about $20 million over the projected cap before signing a draft class or retaining any of their unrestricted free agents. That’s a problem.

It’s actually pretty staggering to see just how much the Saints have committed to some of their more notable players. They have no fewer than seven players, per Spotrac, who will rank among the four highest-paid players at their positions in 2015:

Position Player Rank 2015 Cap Hit

QB Drew Brees 2 $26,400,000
TE Jimmy Graham 1 $11,000,000
G Jahri Evans 1 $11,000,000
G Ben Grubbs 2 $9,600,000
ILB Curtis Lofton 4 $9,000,000
OLB Junior Galette 1 $15,500,000
S Jairus Byrd 1 $10,300,000

Compared to our guards, yes, yes he is.

They are overpaying, but at least some of those players are producing.

Even our Truefans would say "WTF?!" if we were paying our guards that kind of cap money.

And yet Brees has had games where he has just as little time to throw as Smith does behind our line.

That's one thing I'll say for Dorsey-- at least we're not paying jack shit for our shitty players.

After the bloody abortion that was this season most people will become baptized true fans...

Mile High Mania 12-12-2014 12:25 PM

7 players worth about $92M ... wowzers. There will be a bit of restructuring and loss there...

Bugeater 12-12-2014 12:27 PM

Well at least they have something to show for all that money.

i'd hard pressed to ever give a guard that kind of $$

Saints rely more heavily on their OGs than their OTs. Need the interior guys to open up pass lanes for the 5' 7" Brees.

Still.. it's an interesting enough situation there. Looks like they gambled heavily on another SB ring.. and while they are technically still in the hunt at 5-8 thanks to a laughable NFCS.. I'd say their gamble failed. Been wondering but too lazy too check on how they have survived the cap limit up to even this point.

Saints go all in and it just hasn't panned out yet this year. I like that plan of action. The cap can be messaged and this is something the Chiefs should do.

Saints have won more playoff games in the past 5 years than the Chiefs have in 50. You guys still keep worrying about the cap though lol.

It's pretty simple. The Saints have made runs because they have he QB to do it. They're going all in because they know they don't have much time left with that QB.

For people who bitch about the Chiefs not spending money. They spent plenty during the Vermeil era. It's not like that strategy worked for them.
