Or just put up a video camera and wait for some action so you can use it in your next safety film.

True safety story: I was at a Refinery to supervise a new pump startup a few months ago and another employee from my company shows up out of the blue. (to help) The poor dumb bastard whips out his cell phone and starts running pump flow calculations with it right next to the new pump which was a gas process. I looked at the operator who was in the state of shock not believing what he was seeing. I yelled at him with a "What in the **** are you doing!"

The operator then goes off on the guy and kicks him out of the refinery for good after telling him he was lucky he didn't alter his cell phone to be a more intrinsically safe model by shoving it up his ass.

LMAO

Imon Yourside 02-12-2015 08:29 AM

Cell phones are igniters now? How so?

Because they hold an electrical current. You shouldn't use your phone while filling your vehicle with gas either.

Cell phones are not intrinsically safe, particularly in that environment. You have a new pump startup so you have a lot of unpredictable variables in that situation including the possibility of leaking fumes. While odds are in ones favor there is always to chance of an incident and with the high safety protocols of most refineries (Particularly Exxon Mobil) such a move was frowned upon.
