Netflix: No Peaky Blinders thread?

Just finished first season. This show is really enjoyable. Good plot. Lots of criminal politics and violence. Interesting characters. But the style and costuming. Damn. So interesting to make such a squalid environment look so simultaneously stylish.

I made it through the first episode and couldn't get into it. Am I missing the boat?

I don't know. I may be blinded by my love of the costuming and cinematography. It has pretty good critical reception though. It definitely beats the shit out of S2 of True Detective. Only thing I find kind of cheesy at times is the use of modern music, but other moments make the music a perfect choice.

Chiefspants 08-19-2015 02:07 AM

It's a flashy, over the top across the pond spin of Boardwalk Empire.

...And I love every moment of it. This was the role Cillian Murphy was born to play.

KCUnited 08-19-2015 05:14 AM

The costuming is impressive. I didn't make through the 2nd season. I can't remember why, so maybe that's why.

Ragged Robin 08-20-2015 07:34 PM

Pretty sure we have a thread about it.. or at least had a good chunk of discussion about it in one of the BBC threads but yeah, it's quite excellent. Very stylish, above average scripts, and Cillian Murphy is as cool as a cucumber.

TribalElder 08-20-2015 11:35 PM

I loved that show

Hope season 3 comes someday

Finishing up S2...... really solid show.

LMAO

I was telling someone that the other day. It's a true BBC show, so they don't hold anything back on the accents. I think similar to Gangs of New York, they're trying to capture period speech and pull no punches. It's definitely hard to understand at times.

The showrunner guy said he wants to take the character up to World War 2 so there's a lot ahead if that really goes through. Apparently they start shooting Season 3 like next week so maybe sometime early next year or something it'll be ready

ROFL it's not an issue at all for me but supposedly this is a huge problem for American audiences... seems pretty weird to me why this is

salame 09-04-2015 10:27 PM

amazing show

The show actually caught a lot of flack because they asked Sam Neill to tune down his accent for American audiences (it ended up being way less Irish than it had been).

I've now watched season 1 and 4 episodes of season 2 in the last few weeks, going to try and finish this weekend, loving it.

Episode 4 season 2 is probably one of the best hours of entertainment I've watched in TV/movie.

Skyy God 10-09-2019 05:37 PM

Halfway through season 5.

Good call making the fascist the big bad.

BucEyedPea 10-09-2019 06:18 PM

Saw it last year. Excellent but very violent.

NewChief 10-10-2019 04:53 AM

One of my favorite shows. I really like this season, but I’m not thrilled with how they ended it. They usually don’t leave the end of the season so unresolved. Kind of sucks that it’s basically a setup for next season.

My reaction was, what the hell did I just watch.

DJ's left nut 10-10-2019 07:43 AM

Season 2 is a bit of an overcomplicated slog. 3 is guilty of some of the same things but has more interesting characters in the process and has found a new primary protagonist so that helps.

Season 4 is outstanding even if Brody overacts like a MFer.

Haven't started 5 yet because I wanted to re-watch 1 and 2 first. I hear 5 isn't as good as 4 but probably better than the other seasons. In either event, the first 4 seasons are worth it for Alfie Solomons alone.

Probably the best scene in the show right here:

https://www.facebook.com/PopularSeri...4938242117907/

Hardy and Murphy just kill it here.

HemiEd 03-19-2021 07:54 PM

Loving this show and especially the music.

So I gave it another go. Turned on Closed Captioning. It helped a lot.

I made it through and need more. I’m so totally hooked on this shit. Every ****ing scene with Hardy in it is must see.

If you are on the fence turn on CC and get with it.

srvy 04-11-2021 01:11 AM

Love the show. At this point, anything that isn't a comic book superhero is a ++. So sick of that shit!

What the **** did she die from? She's young as hell and was ****ing phenomenal in Peaky Blinders.

Anyone watching this last season? It's...well...not like a normal Peaky Blinders season...

InChiefsHeaven 06-12-2022 08:59 PM

Just finished the season. The last episode is ****ing ridiculous...in a good way. But the season on the whole was really weird. I guess they are making a movie to finish it up. There's definitely a lot of loose ends here. I'll re-watch this season again. Was not crazy about it to be honest, but the last episode was ****ing awesome...

Buehler445 06-12-2022 09:14 PM

I'm working on E4 right now. I guess I shouldn't have clicked on the thread for spoilers. I'm a dumbass. LOL Thanks for not spoiling it.

Show is so good. But I do miss Helen McCrory. She was fantastic.

Thanks for the heads up about the movie.

Buehler445 06-15-2022 09:42 AM

I really ****ing like Peaky Blinders.

So many good characters. Any time Alfie Solomons is on the screen I'm glued to the dialogue. Tom Hardy is so ****ing good. And I get that it is mostly comic relief, but **** it's hilarious.

In early seasons I wasn't in for the Ada character (other than Sophie Rundle is an absolute smokeshow), but she really came into an enjoyable character after she's like, you know what's not so bad? Money. I really liked the scenes she was in.

Arthur is a character I also enjoy. It kind of sucks when he's completely off the rails, but when he circles back it is invariably compelling. Man he's had some really good performances.

Spoiler!

Of course Murphy is a stud. There really isn't anything to say. Dude is throwing 100 for the whole series, without really saying much most of the time.

This really did miss Helen McCrory (RIP :( ). She was really excellent in this show and it missed her. They tried to fill in some of that role with Ava, but they even wrote in "I'm not Polly". She was really good. RIP.

Into the spoilers

Spoiler!

The show just does so much stuff well it's a shame to see it go. It's also a shame that they are pivoting away from more "prestige TV" and towards Reality. ****ing Netflix. If I can get my wife convinced that the kids can do without it there is a good chance I'll shitcan it. Peaky Blinders is worth money. Reality TV is very much not to this consumer, anyway.

Don't fret they're making a movie to wrap things up

Honestly, I just don't think it's necessary.

They landed the plane so incredibly well in that finale. The degree of difficulty in that final season without Polly was remarkable and they really got it all right.

I'd prefer they just not do a movie at all, but it's hard to not want to go back to that universe if only for a couple of hours.

Graystoke 01-02-2025 10:02 AM

So late to this thread. I just started watching season 1 and I am hooked.
I figured my wife would like it but she does not. She thinks it is to violent.
What impresses me the most is the scenery and backdrop. They made this thing pretty gritty just like the industrial revolution.

Knight has this ending in mind (that he’s openly talked about multiple times, so spoilers beware), that I worry he’s been stuck on for so long it’ll feel a little forced in the context of what the show has become (like How I Met Your Mother’s ending, for instance).

Spoiler!

I’d love to be wrong, though. I consider Season 2’s finale to be among some of the greatest television ever.

Congrats. Enjoy the ride. It is in my pantheon of TV.

I'd agree the S2 finale is some of the greatest television ever, and when Murphy is in the field might be one of the best couple minutes of acting put on screen.

The first time I saw it I had to rewind it because I was so in it, I missed what actually happened at the end. It was so good I couldn't process it or some shit.

That's just such a strangely relatable moment considering the context. I mean even if you're only talking about some stupid video game you played as a kid, we all have some moment where we were like "Damn man...I was riiiiight there. And not its all gone..."

No matter how banal or remarkable your life may be, you see that moment and you feel it a bit of a twinge.

In the context of him being completely under control and quiet for 2 seasons and then he loses his shit.

So ****ing close.
