Transitions lenses

Do you have them? Did you like them? Did you feel it was worth the extra expense?

I'm going in for new eyeglasses this week and am taking the plunge into high end progressives. I already know I'm going with crizal for my scratch and antiglare coating. Just can't decide if the transitions is worth it or not for one extra added convenience.

splatbass 05-01-2016 05:33 PM

I like mine. The one thing I don't like is that they don't get dark in the car. The windows block UV, preventing them from darkening.

Fire Me Boy! 05-01-2016 06:10 PM

I like mine. Same complaint as splat.

RedandGold 05-01-2016 06:21 PM

I usually wear contacts, but I have Transitions on my glasses. Overall, I am pleased, but they don't get dark enough when driving. One thing I'll say is that Crizal is a waste of money. My wife, uncle, and I each got it, and none of us would ever get it again.

Crizal provided little noticeable benefit, and it makes them next to impossible to keep clean.

Transitions aren't supposed to get dark in the car because your windows block out the UV light. They make a new transitions now that does get dark in the car.

As far as Crizal, I've been told by several people its much easier to keep clean than standard anti reflective coatings. So you are saying its just as much a pain in the ass even for crizal?

Crizal = same PITA factor with name recognition (you're just paying a premium for it)

007 05-01-2016 07:53 PM

Hmmm didn't expect that. I hate cleaning anti reflectives but they are too effective at killing reflections to leave them off.

id opt out. the quality is gone. basically the polymers used in glasses is from 3rd world factories.

srvy 05-01-2016 08:13 PM

Id just get a pair of prescript sunglasses. Everyone I know who come in from the field with those always look like doofs. The sunglasses in side thing because the take so long to transition back in office lighting.

opt out of transitions, crizal, or both?

That was the one thing I wondered about. They say that the transition indoors only takes a couple minutes but I was at my fathers today and his took a good 5 minutes. But they are a year old too.

One thing I want from my glasses is to see them last for at least 4-5 years. I do wonder if the coatings will last that long. These are going to be varilux progressives because the standard progessives I have tried suck ass.

Mike in SW-MO 05-01-2016 08:38 PM

Agree with the car thing.

But also wore mine snow skiing. They were so dark on an overcast day I could not see moguls. Skiing by braille the whole time.

Dartgod 05-01-2016 08:39 PM

I love my transition lenses. I have some clip-on type of sunglasses, except thy're held on with magnets, for when I'm driving. With the transitions, I never have to worry about carrying those things with me outside of the car.

dmahurin 05-01-2016 08:39 PM

I got a magnetic clip on instead of the transitions. Absolutley love them. Will never do the transitions again. Very similar to this.

both to be honestly.

007 05-02-2016 05:27 AM

The one thing that kind of frustrated me is that they don't have sample glasses on the counter for crizal and transitions. Just a unisex set that has both. Crizal has their little cardboard display but that only shows you what other people see not what you would see.

ExtremeChief 05-02-2016 06:08 AM

My transitions take forever to lighten back up when going inside. They have crizal too. Love them outside but annoying having to wait 5 minutes to see when coming back in.

BlackHelicopters 05-02-2016 06:13 AM

Transition to contacts if possible. I did it two years ago when I was 50. Reluctant at first, but very easy. Then buy some Oakleys or Ray Bans.

I've transitioned in an out of contacts two or three times. I ended up really liking this last pair of glasses I got and eventually stopped wearing my contacts altogether.

Mine have both, too.

The transition from dark to light doesn't really bother me; they're a bitch to keep clean, though.

Now I am thinking about getting transitions and skipping crizal

I carry a small lens wipe with me, no joke. Coincidentally (or tellingly), it's branded Crizal.

I always have a cleaning cloth in my glasses case.

ChiefsLV 05-02-2016 09:56 AM

Had them in my previous pair and got new glasses specifically to get rid of them. I guess I was under the impression that they'd turn into sunglasses when in the sun but they don't. Mine never got as dark as sunglasses and ended up being just more of a tinted lens in the sun. I just didn't like how they looked partially tinted like that. It looked dorky to me. Also I didn't realize that they would not be tinted while in the car which is where I needed the tinting the most. Hope this helps

I wore contacts when I was younger, but as my eyes changed it got to the point where they screwed up my near vision. So the choice was wear contacts and carry reading glasses, or just wear glasses and take them off to read. So I wear glasses. If I was going to do it your way I would have to wear contacts and carry both reading glasses and sunglasses.

My eyes are horrible. But my doc fitted my eyes with contacts any way. He made one eye dominant near, and one eye dominant far. It works great. I was skeptical with my astigmatism. August 2014 is when I switched from glasses, and I haven't looked back. Find a different doc.

My eye doctor does that herself, but I can't handle having the eyes different from each other.

Transitions lenses

You can do progressive for contacts? Not that it matters. I can't stand putting anything on my eye anyway. Plus I have astigmatism in both eyes.

They give you one contact for distance and one for near. So if you want to look far away you use one eye, if you want to read you use the other. Doesn't sound very good to me.

Guys at work say the same thing. Just get prescription polarized traditional Ray Bans your eyes change its easy to get new lenses. Best to stick to what gets the job done. It does require two sets of glasses and a lot of insurance only replaces every 2 years. If you have a pair regular glasses that you see fine wait it out and go with the prescript sunglasses.

I wear contacts and have for years when I started to not be able to read close up I got the reading glasses and what a pain. My eye Doc suggested one for reaching out and the other eye unaided as I see close up fine without contacts in. It was no problem for me the transition and was used to by the end of the day. You just dont really notice it the brain compensates.

This is what I have. I also have the transition lenses. These magnetic clip-ons cost $100 to replace.

Ditto.

To solve this, I have clip on sunglasses which attach to my regular glasses, which I keep in the car.

Unless I'm asleep, I'm wearing my glasses, so it's the full boat for me. Throw every advantage I can onto them, and just suck it up and pay it.

Well that makes zero sense at all. White trash has no teeth and wears a broken pair of glasses with tape on them in Walmart while their ass is hanging halfway out of their ripped sweats that don't stay up.

007 05-02-2016 05:02 PM

Its so annoying speaking with the salesperson because they are just that. You can't get an honest answer out of them because Crizal and Transitions are the best thing ever created. LMAO

Meanwhile, I hear the everyday folk say how the crizal isn't any better than the cheap antireflective coatings.

Chief Pagan 05-02-2016 05:14 PM

Yea, the transitions don't get as dark as actual sunglasses or dark in the car. They still help and I still like them. I guess it depends if you are very cost conscious. I'm not regarding eye glasses. I guess I'm also past being fashion conscious about how they look.

I also like that in scenarios where I may be outside from afternoon through evening I don't have to worry about carrying a sunglass case to put my sunglasses back into when it gets dark. (I wear contacts part of the time).

I used to struggle to keep the anti-glare clean. I don't use the tiny cloth that you may get with the glasses. Get a couple of large, soft towels. The type for drying dishes. Make sure you get soft ones not the cheapo ones from WalMart/Target and laundry them frequently. A really clean towel helps prevents smears. A tiny cloth is good for one or two wipes and after that it just smears. Surprisingly enough, I found the large refill bottle from WalMart worked better than the spray from the eye doctors office and don't spray too much.

JD10367 05-02-2016 06:39 PM

Hated the Transitions. Wouldn't get dark in the car so I had to wear sunglasses in the car. Stayed too dark when I went indoors so I had to take my glasses off for the first five minutes I was indoors. Didn't really get dark enough as sunglasses. Sometimes if the sun hit them weird I'd get weird dark/light patterns on them. When my prescription changed I dumped them and went back to plain old glasses and I just put on clip-on sunglasses, much easier.

Chief Pagan 05-02-2016 08:02 PM

Might be more than you want to spend but transition lens don't prevent you from putting clip on in the car.

Are the transitional lenses gender neutral?

srvy 05-02-2016 08:27 PM

One last comment and I cant stress this enough eyeglass frames go out of style about as fst as it takes to get your order. Ray Ban sunglasses never do I dont know why but they just get it right. Get the cheapest functional eyeglasses you can because you will replace as soon as can hardly anyone ever gets new lenses in an old frame. It isn't that way with RB they are forever unless your prone to losing. I have never had the clip on's seem interesting but do look like a good way to scratch and I hate scratches causes halo's and other strange glare and distortion.

srvy 05-02-2016 08:37 PM

I know I promised but I just remember something. Maybe worth a look but one the engineers where I work swears by zenni optical. I know he says he never pays over a 100 bucks through them and they look nice. Worth a look I suppose any cp'ers purchased through them?

For single vision lenses they are great. Not for progressives. I've done both with them
