Pokemon Go: Augmented Reality (AR) Game For Your Smart Phone
To Be The Very Best: Pokémon Enters Into Augmented Reality
June 30, 20169:01 AM ET Gabriel Rosenberg http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2016...3-s800-c85.jpg Halfway through your walk to school, a wild Charmander appears. Just a few throws of a Pokéball, and it could be yours. Will you stop to catch it? Nintendo is betting you will. Not just that, they're betting that you've waited most of your life to see a Pokémon in the real world. Pokémon Go — the upcoming iOS and Android app from Nintendo, The Pokémon Co., and developer Niantic Labs — promises to let anyone with a smart phone "find" and train the diverse creatures of Pokémon all around them. For aspiring Trainers, it could be an entirely new way to interact with a now 20-year-old franchise. For these companies, though, Pokémon Go — which launches for free sometime in July — offers the biggest opportunity yet to bring augmented reality into the mainstream, a chance to prove not only that AR technology is ready for people, but that people are ready for AR. http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechc...-the-very-best I thought it was an interesting idea, AR rather than VR. I've seen lots of apps that kind of do this already-mostly playing with pictures to add makeup or special effects. I'm not fond of the Pokemon craze but a Google Maps type of integration and ( I assume) a way of monetizing the app by opening it up to sponsored locations sounds intriguing. |
Will this thing ever come out?

Hopefully. They say July. |
I'll probably try it out to fart around and see how far along AR has come on a simplistic scale.
|
Have you ever looked at Ingress? It is the same engine repurposed into something more easily marketed.

I was in the closed beta. This game sucks ass.
|
Oh, it's on bitches
|
Imma wait till they polish it.
|
Severs keep going down...waste of time so far.
|
I tried it and can't get it to work at all. I'll revisit again later to see if they can deliver a functional app.
|
This has been all OVER social media the last few days. I wouldn't be surprised if they are partnered with Facebook and twitter to artificially feed people more 'stories' and posts about the game.
|
It's free and fun. My dog is enjoying her 15 miles of walks a day now lol.
I'm pretty sure that I'm one of the top players due to not having to work and the game not taking much skill. |
There are about 15 gyms I can walk to and my Pidgeot is one of the highest levels possible and I've taken every single gym I've come across. I don't leave the Pidgeot at the gyms so I don't hold onto them, but I gain a shit lid of level stealing gyms from other teams. I went out at 6 am this morning and got back at 8 am and took 4 gyms along the way.

Side note, Year 2 "Moments of Triumph" just dropped for Destiny. Since you have the free time, probably worth you logging in for a few days and knocking them out. |
my kid and wife couldn't get it to download yesterday. kept on saying that the server was too busy.
i may look at this a bit later. storm damage from last night is screwing with my life...... |

My daughter wants to play it. But I haven't been able to create a Pokemon Training Club account.
The page says "We're currently in the process of making Pokemon.com an even better experience for Pokémon fans! Please check back in a little while. Thanks!" |
I have no comprehension of what the **** this is even about. I guess I am old.

I downloaded it for old time's sake and caught a Charmander on the way to work. I don't really have much time to fiddle with it at the moment.
Do you actually battle your Pokemon? Can you level them up? Evolve them? |
So..........this is a thing now?
|
|
I went out the other day and one of them was behind a 50 y/o woman. I really wanted Char Char so I moved her slightly out of the way. She was pissed.

My daughters been annoying me with this game for a couple days now. Every time I leave, she wants to go with to find some Pokemon.
Ahh well, at least we're spending time together. |

Walked quite a bit with my daughter today collecting. Pretty fun for both of us. Apparently it's only cool after level 5 though.
Getting anew phone in a month, hopefully the account will transfer over, or my daughter may commit pokemurder. Also, for having never liked Pokemon befor, she talked her grandma into taking her to build a bear and getting a character... Day one. Grandma is a sucker. |

I walked around my neighborhood at 1 am and collected some rats and birds.
Tight. I am also very drunk and am glad I wasn't finee for public intoxication. |
Wow, game still will not work for me at all. I get the Niantic splash screen. Then a screen with the Pokemon logo on it that has me enter my birth date. I enter the date, then it takes me to a log in screen with a Google option or a Trainer Club option. I don't have a Trainer Club account and they are impossible to create now. So I pick Google. The phone has me select which Google account I want to sign in on, I do it. Black screen, back to Niantic splash screen to repeat the process infinitely.

This game is pretty cool. My kids and I are having fun with it.
|
Have fun having all of your phone's info stolen and put into a database.
|
Decided to go on a walk, and the servers go down/get glitchy. Perfect

But seriously it's too freaking hot here in FL to go out searching. They should've released this in the Fall or Spring. SMH. |

This thing has just freaking exploded in Des Moines. I never heard about it till yesterday, now its all over the news. Really weird yesterday to see well-dressed professionals during the lunch hour walking around downtown with their phones out looking for pokemon. So, today I decided to download it to see what the fuss was about.
I don't know if I'll stick with it or not, but I don't think I can say anything bad about a game that forces people to go outside, walk around, and get some fresh air and exercise. |

I got it just for the hell of it to see what the fuss was all about and it's kind of fun and i've never played or watched pokemon.
how do you get more pokemon balls!? i tossed like 50 at a ****ing bat and now i'm out. I just got a galaxy s7 edge 2 weeks back and i've already exceeded my monthly data. I'm not sure if it's because this game or some other bloatware apps running it all up. I mean i've only had pokemon go on my phone for 2 days and i've been working so I haven't used it much. Feel like I can't play it anymore unless I pay for more data which isn't worth it to me. |

Did I hear right that it made Nintendo $9 Billion this last week !

|
Downtown Lee's Summit is crazy with the Pokemon Go right now...
|
I have no idea what's going on. So your Pokémon fight and then you take other person's character? What is the ultimate goal of Pokemon? To just collect them and get higher levels?

quick tip: when you throw a pokeball at something and miss, sometimes instead of vanishing, the ball will roll on the ground for a bit. If you touch it, you get that pokeball back.
edit: another tip: At level 5 you are asked to pick a team. I don't know how relevant this choice is, but it is not reversible so you may want to read what the obsessive people on the internet may have written on it. They are Valor (red), Mystic (blue), and Instinct (Yellow). Once you pick a team, you are (currently) with that team forever for that account. On an unrelated note, I found this amusing for some reason. http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/.../4f1.jpg_large |
The zombie apocalypse is here, and they are staring at their phones.
|
I gave in and downloaded it Monday evening. Just now reaching level 3. Only places I've been are work and home. I did walk to a nearby church which is a pokestop. Oh, and I got some 2-headed thing while I was at the convenience store on my lunch hour today.
|
This is super ghey. All of you. Super duper gheys.
|
It is getting basement dwellers to exercise.
Will be interesting to see how they keep people hooked and playing though. Or micro transactions. |

If they enable you to fight friends outside of a gym they could make a shit ton more money |

It's amazing how far Video Games have come. The old adage "Go outside and play instead of playing games inside" wont be the norm come the future. |
