He ended the regular season with 1,836 all purpose yards, which is the 16th-highest single-season total in Chiefs history. The only players who have had more are Dante Hall (4x), Jamaal Charles (3x), Priest Holmes (3x), Larry Johnson (2x), Abner Haynes (2x), and Tamarick Vanover (1x).

His 15.2 ypr on punts is the second highest total in Chiefs history for players with 20+ returns. Dante Hall had one year at 16.3.

There have been only 16 season performances of 12 TDs or more by Chiefs, of which one is Tyreek. The only other players to do it are Priest Holmes (3x), Abner Haynes (3x), Larry Johnson (2x), Jamaal Charles (2x), Marcus Allen (1x), Dwayne Bowe (1x), Chris Burford (1x), Christian Okoye (1x), and Otis Taylor (1x).

After his rookie season, he now ranks 27th all time in return yard for the Chiefs, one yard behind Dale Carter. If he repeats this season next year, he'll leap all the way to 7th.

In NFL history, he had the 4th best punt return average (15.2) ever among players with 40+ returns. The other three are Patrick Peterson in 2011 (15.9), Devin Hester in 2007 (15.5), and Billy "White Shoes" Johnson in 1975 (15.3).

He fast.

Those stats make me sad that Charles can't help us with the next step. Having (a healthy) him on the field with the rest of our guys would have been lethal.

Oh, good question. He had the third-best rookie season in Chiefs history in all-purpose yards.

Tyreek Hill is making me learn more about Abner, and he must have been amazing.

Of course, one caveat is that Year One of the AFL was probably kind of chaotic. I notice that three of the top ten Chiefs rookie seasons in all-purpose yards were in 1960 and 1961, and it makes me think that it was a circus. But hey, you can only play the team that they put on the field against you.

To clear up ambiguity, it's not so explicitly dire as 'Jamaal tried to come back for the playoffs and was utterly unable to perform.'

He was on IR with us having the opportunity to take one player off IR for the playoffs. That opportunity was taken to bring up a LB when DJ went down for the season. This left Jamaal with no path back to the active roster this year.

It may all be moot in the end if he retires or goes FA this offseason, but I thought you might need the clarification.

He is a far more well rounded football player

The amazing thing is that is like half a season. He was just used on returns early and didn't really take off on offense until the last 6 weeks or so. If he can stay healthy all season, watch the **** out.

The other amazing thing is that a lot of those yards are coasting because he already blew by the other 21 guys on the field. Dude is crazy.

And two blocks in the back negated another two scores early.

I really hope he keeps his shit together once he becomes a star. I really want the guy to be a model citizen and a playmaker. He's so much fun to watch. I actually feel like he MIGHT be the guy that pushes us over the top to have success in the playoffs. The guy loves the limelight if he can handle it he could be a perennial star.

He hit a top speed of 22.77 MPH on the free kick return against Denver. Acknowledging that peak mph is a gimmick stat, as far as I can tell, that is the fastest of any player over the last two seasons.

Just imagine where his stats would be if Andy used him a lot more the first 3rd of the season.

Probably. I mean my wife, who hates football and only watched the Broncos-Chiefs games this year, asked me if "the guy who just scored is that really fast guy". If she thought he was fast then he's only a game or two away from being a household name.

Granted, that's a top speed and not a timed speed from starting blocks, but 22.77 mph is the average speed of a person running a 9.82 in the 100m dash.

KC hit the jackpot with Hill....He's a superstar. The only other Chiefs player I've said that about was Charles, before he became one.

What a strange turn of events...I'm more impressed with Hill than I was with Charles at this stage. I've never seen a rookie do what he's doing...he's clowning the best athletes in the world.

The problem with Hill is that we have a hard time getting him the ball. Alex does a lot of things well, but those don't accentuate Hill's skill set. Put this guy on a team with a QB that can hit a guy in stride and he would be destroying the league right now. Look what he's done with Smith, and think about what he would look like in a real passing offense.

If not for Alex Smith, Prince and David Bowie would be alive and healthy!!

You can hate on Smith all you want...but this team is better than the Trent Green era Chiefs. Alex's two comeback wins were epic...I dont remember Green ever doing that.

Come on, you don't think Hill would have better numbers with a different QB throwing to him? I really wasn't trying to slight Smith, it's just that throwing downfield and hitting those guys when they are wide open isn't his thing. The fact that Hill as done what he's done is pretty amazing and a testament to his skills. Let's not make this a negative thing. That's really not how I meant it to come across.

I think part of the reasons we started using him as an RB is because Reid thought we weren't getting him enough touches in the passing game. He's a pretty good WR already, but those touches depend on what the defense gives you whereas rushes aren't as much. I agree that this is a better team than during the Green years. Not saying we will go all the way, but it wouldn't surprise me if we did. This team is capable of beating anyone.

I am actually blown away that Vanover had more yards in a season. I thik he returned all kickoffs and punts though and Hill did not return many kickoffs later in the year.

In the playoffs he should be returning kicks IMO.

What was the deal with Paul Palmer? I was pretty young in 1987 but remember Harvey Williams well in 1991. If he was a rookie in 87, it seems like he would have been in his prime in 91. Injuries?

I'm rewatching the game right now. The play to Conley right before half time was a missed opportunity. Hill was wide open going in to the endzone.

There was 12 seconds on the clock and we were already in field goal range. Throw it to the endzone or away.

We were very fortunate that this one counted. The punter was blatantly blocked in the back right before Hill ran by him.

Yeah, that'll get you suspended. It sounds like the whole team lost discipline.

Palmer came and went so fast in Kansas City that he never made much of an impression on me. He was obviously a disappointment as a first round pick, but to some extent I think he was never noticed because the second round pick was Christian Okoye.

He actually was fairly productive, though, when you consider that his path to starting was blocked by the Nigerian Nightmare. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns as a rookie, and in his second year he had more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage, 611 receiving and 452 rushing (albeit with a horrendous 3.4 average). He was then cut before his third season, which was Marty's first. I'm guessing Marty didn't like small running backs and particularly didn't like small running backs who threaten to throw games.

Edit: Holy cow. He fumbled 7 times on 187 touches from scrimmage in that 1,000 yard season, and he fumbled 12 times on 344 touches from scrimmage in his career. It sounds like threatening to fumble was a bit redundant. No wonder Marty cut him.

I think it's a beginner journalist so some parts are confusing, but it's got some good background. Reading between the lines, it sounded like he was a little slow to mature, which links in with the threat to fumble.

A few other interesting tidbits from the article if you don't want to wade through it:

• He was recruited to Temple by their head coach Bruce Arians. Wow. Bruce Arians has been around for a while, I guess.
  
• He was a Heisman finalist, but his records at Temple were nullified when it was revealed that he accepted money from agents. He said it wasn't much money (enough to buy cheesesteaks and subway rides), and that the only person who knew was a teammate who blackmailed him for more cheesesteaks. However, he also acknowledged that he sent cash to his great-grandmother at this time to help support her.
  
• Apparently he was raised by his great-grandmother, and she died on the same day he was drafted, which derailed him for a bit. .
  
• Knowing that his great-grandmother was sick, he went to her house on draft day. But she didn't get ESPN, so he couldn't watch the draft and instead just waited around for the phone to ring. (Remember: pre-internet).
  
• A football reporter was sent to his house on draft day to hang out with him. The reporter was James Brown, the guy who now runs one of the pre-game shows. (I never remember which guys are on which shows.)

I always like reading about these past guys. They fade into history and become just names, but they always have very interesting stories when you dig a little.

I am genuinely surprised Vanover is that high up. He was dynamic those first couple of years, but I don't remember having a rookie season like that.

And no, I didn't expect to see Harvey Williams anywhere other than down in the hood driving a 100K car and getting jacked. Again.
