Any thoughts on the potential ice storm this weekend?

This site seems to predict chaos and 2 inches of ice but I hope it's wrong.

https://www.facebook.com/WxSynopsis/...type=3&theater

Hope it's just a few flurries.

I am very concerned when looking at the 12z EURO run from earlier today. Honestly I never seen max values being outputted on the EURO model before for Ice, so this is new to me. To say im concerned is an understatement. For anyone who understands icestorms and just how much can cause widespread impacts, all it takes is just .25 for power outages. If theres .50-.75 you are dealing with prolonged impacts, trees downed and extensive damage to power lines. Between 1.00-1.50 entire power grids become damaged. Widespread damage to trees. Roads impassable for days if not weeks. 1.50-2.00 power grids not only shut down but substations become damaged from the weight of ice accumulations building on transformers and pylons. Hard to imagine ice accumulating over 2inches. Once you get into these extreme values this is what you call a "catastrophic ice storm". Power grids can become damaged and take months to be fully repaired. So there is big time worries for central Oklahoma up to Ohio. We will be monitoring this potential and update when warranted. Anything can change, and if there is one forecast that I hope to god does not verify, this is the one.

if the roads are covered in ice the attendance will be shit on Sunday.

We went thru that shit in sw mo a few years back. 10 days without power sucks

O.city 01-09-2017 08:36 PM

If there's more than an inch of ice, they won't be playing the game in kc sunday

You think people from the midwest have never seen this shit before? I'm driving 3 hours to go to the game and will stay the night after but it's not keeping me from going.

Pitt fans may not travel that far but local area will show.

Would you really blame them if they valued their life over a football game? This forecast may turn into a whole lot of nothing. But, if it is as bad as it has the potential to be, I wouldn't blame them one bit for staying home and off the streets.

Sure if we get 2" of ice. Not likely.

I completely agree that its not likely. But I would be a fool to not be keeping it in the back of my mind. When it comes to driving in those conditions, its not me I'm worried about, its all the drivers that don't know how to drive in it. Regardless of the region, there are tons of shitty drivers that you need to be worried about.

I'd love an excuse to do absolutely nothing this weekend.

(Better not f up my q39 reservation friday night tho)

displacedinMN 01-09-2017 09:02 PM

This does not look fun

Friday Night Freezing rain likely, mainly after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 21. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday Freezing rain likely, mainly before 7am. Cloudy, with a high near 30. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday Night A chance of freezing rain. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday A chance of rain or freezing rain. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Unless it is supercooled on the way down and hits what is cold/frozen on the ground. Then it will freeze too.

right? the last time I saw a forecast like this was a week before christmas. We were supposed to get snow and ice on christmas. meanwhile local forecasts showed temps in the 60s. A few days before christmas they were predicting a tornado outbreak. Was a nice christmas in the 60s here with some tornados off to the west.

wazu 01-09-2017 09:13 PM

We'll be fine.

This is the truth. It's going to be in the 40s these few days. If there was a deep freeze, I'd be more concerned about freezing rain.

But if the temperature is 36 degrees at 11 AM, that's not going to freeze.

good

displacedinMN 01-09-2017 09:22 PM

Do they treat that much in MO anymore?

Easy 6 01-09-2017 09:25 PM

No worries at all, I've got...

3 years experience living in Alaska and driving on those roads

An arctic rated sleeping bag and buttloads of other blankets

Plenty of candles

Fresh batteries in the lantern

Plenty of food

Incredible collection of books

Camp stove fueled by tons of fuel pellets, no shortage there

I can hunker down for several days if necessary

My only hope is that the worst of it misses Arrowhead, please dont gimme an ice storm that kills crowd turnout and turns the game into a slopfest that favors LeVeon Bell

Flying in Saturday afternoon. Do these storms ever shut down the airport?

As long as I can get to MCI, and my Uber driver can get me to Arrowhead, I'll be there!

First of all, 36, is the high. It could take until mid afternoon to get above freezing. Secondly, it certainly can and does snow at temps up to around 37.

DaFace 01-09-2017 09:38 PM

I'm attempting to dump my tickets at this point. If I don't sell them and the forecast doesn't get too much worse, I'll still power through it and make the trip, but if I can get my money back, I'm bailing.

I could handle it if it were just a few hours' drive, but it's a 10+ hour trip for me in good weather.

No way I'd plan to drive across Kansas with a weather forecast like this one. Even if you are careful, there are always idiots out there going way too fast.

Already planning on buying bread, milk and eggs because it's not a winter storm unless we stock up on these 3 items, whether needed or not.

Seriously though, the only times I have ever lost control of my vehicle were due to ice, no stop, no go, no left, no right, just whatever track that pile of Detroit steel decides to take. Exhilarating yet terrifying.

I do have faith in the (in)accuracy of the weather forecasters, wbf.

Mama Hip Rockets 01-09-2017 10:02 PM

I was hoping to drive up from Springfield, but honestly this is pretty scary and I'm thinking about bailing. I really want to go to this game, but if the roads are icy, there's no way I can risk that.

Not really. I have no plans to miss this game but if I were to, those tickets are not going on the market for a sqealer fan. I would give them away before I sold them to a fan of another team.

What's crazy is this storm has been in the forecast for the last two to three weeks. It's been insanely consistent for that far off.

If you fly in you only have 1 driver to worry about handling the conditions, if you drive you have to worry about all the other "drivers" out there. (Whom I don't have a lot of faith in.)

I imagine that they will be salting the roads big time starting in a few days if the predictions stay as they are. Even if there wasn't a game they would do that but they will probably be even more aggressive because of the game with preparations before and active treatment during the storm. That being said I'm not sure if anything can be very effective with a half inch or more of ice.
